"Even as Sodom and Gomorrha and the cities about them in like manner ...are set forth as 'examples'....suffering the vengence of 'eternal fire'", (Jude 7).

Question: Are these cities burning today ?

It is the destruction that is eternal, not the fires themselves.

By this statement I could take it that you are a literalist. The scriptures should only be taken literally - no allegories, no metaphors, just verbatim literalism, correct?

It depends on the context of scripture, if a symbol is used, etc.
Since Sodom and Gomorrha were 'real' cities....and those cities were destroyed by 'real' fire....and since God used the word, 'examples'....Yes, you could say that I take it literally in this case.

Hi,
Well... if you want to take it literal, Jude 7 is not talking of the towns and cities themselves, but of the people that lived there and performed the evil deeds that exacted their just punishment.

Jude 7 is saying is that those people are suffering eternal fire.

It is very literal actually. The names of those cities, and the evil that the people did there, will be remembered eternally. Those populations, along with the city names, will eternally suffer in the minds of man. They are perfect examples of God's judgement and punishment.

Unfortunatly, this nation of ours is heading for the same type of thing, as laws are being passed to allow sin to be favorably exposed.
There is the problem of doing God's will...fighting sin...and, allowing people the freedom of choice, which even God allows, to the destruction of the people that commit such sins.
