Hi.

The topic of weight loss has come up in a couple of threads recently.

I could stand to lose about 15-20 lbs. myself.

I have been eating less, eating more fresh fruits and veggies and upping the ante on excercise. I have lost a little but not as much as I think I should have given the lifestyle changes I have made.

Any suggestions?

Any hope for a woman over 40 who has had a couple of kids?

woman over 40? Your weight loss will be, and should be steady and gradual.

If you are eating healthier, and getting more exercise then you will lose weight. Unless you are on a dedicated diet and exercise program you should expect a loss of about 5 lbs a month.

If you want to lose more then put yourself into a more dedicated exercise program and moderate what and when you eat.

OF COURSE THERE'S HOPE!!!

I'm 42 going on 43 in april. I am 5'1 and I weighed myself this morning at 173 lbs. I'm supposed to be around 118-125..I've got at least 50 lbs to lose!

About two weeks ago I started eating three meals a day, and walking a bit more when possible. I've lost 5 lbs! I was 178 when we left out of the house the beginning of January.

You have two kids to keep you moving..utilize them into your fitness program..How old are they? Put on a video and workout with a group on tv in between chores. Usually 20 minute workouts.

We made it home!! I'm dusting off my equipment and digging out of the closet (if I can find my rubberband), all those things I have collected over the years that are collecting dust..LOL..

I have a brand new 10 speed bike I baught about 5 years ago and have ridden twice.. Rolling Eyes
All I need to do now is remember how to balance..LOL..

There's hope luv!..There's always hope!
And this time I'm sticking to it.. Wink

02/23/08 beginning weight 173 lbs..

I do have two kids and three step-children.

My baby is 9. My stepson lives 300 miles away with his mom.

The two oldest step children are adults and one lives out of state.

My oldest daughter is 27 and also lives out of state with my grandson and my grandbaby to be. (She's expecting again in July).

LOL

I do a lot with my 9 year old. We swim, walk, hike, play frisbee, basketball, catch and ride our bikes. Sometimes, I wear her right out. Sometimes she wears me out. I also go to the gym 2-3 times a week. I have been eating much more sensibly in recent months but today was kind of an exception. We had spaghetti with meat sauce (made by my 9-year old... she's a pretty good cook)! and garlic cheese bread.

I figure once in a while, you've gotta' have something you crave.

Tomorrow morning, I am having 'Curves' cereal for breakfast with 2% (I haven't been able to bring myself to drinking 1% because of the taste).

For lunch, I will most likely have some kind of fresh fruit and veggie with no condiments or butter & 1/2 lean ham sandwich light on the mayo.

I'm not sure about dinner yet... I have been making a conscious effort to eat less of whatever we have at dinner.

I have limited myself to one egg, toast and meat breakfast per week. I have 1 piece or less of toast, 1 egg and usually 2 strips of bacon and some OJ. That's it.

I've also started walking more.

I appreciate the feedback you've given.

If anyone has any delicious low fat recipes to share that would be great.

I did have grilled salmon recently and it was GREAT!

Supposed to be or want to be? Check your BMI which I calculate to be about 32.6, just above the recommended limits. I will caution you though that many experts are second-thinking BMI's. True it is a standardized way of measuring body mass, but not everyone who has a BMI that is higher than the 'established' standards is unhealthy...

As long as you stay away from 'low fat' foods... Don't put yourself in a postition of thinking you are eating right and simply confusing your body (which will turn around and readjust itself accordingly, trust me). Making pancakes with applesauce rather than oil, and stuff like that is a good way to reduce unnecessary fat and add flavor to food, but any packages that say 'low fat' on them are a waste of money and a false sense of security.

I would suggest that you make good eating choices overall but try to put one choice foremost in your mind:

Moderation. If you want something, eat it, just moderate that choice and take up the slack on the back end (meaning: move your back end a little more to throw off a few calories)

Worry less about calories and fat than you do about carbs, and remember to eat what you like. Being healthy is about making your life longer and more enjoyable, if you aren't liking what you put in your mouth, then what is the use of doing it, or staying alive for ten more years to do it more?

They say..(the nutritionists in general), that you should be about the weight you were when in highschool.
in general that is.
hmm..I didn't go to highschool lol..and when I should have been I was pregnant..so I can't use those figures LOL..
But most of my 20's I was between 125 and 130.
I would like to get back there again. But I was a lot more physical than I am today.

I'm 5'5" tall and I was 114 lbs. for years. Then after the birth of my oldest daughter I was around 125 lbs. for a long time. I gained a little weight at one time. I was 160 lbs at one time but just briefly. I seemed to hover around 140 lbs. for a while then got back down to 120-125 lbs. I was a (pant) size 7 when I met my hubby. I ballooned up to 220 + when I was pregnant with my youngest. She was 7 lbs. 14 oz. and I only lost 21 lbs. when I had her. It took a while but I got down to size 10 after I had her but crept up to 14 and I just seem to be stuck there.

I would love to be a size 9.

Why concentrate on carbs, JP? 1 gram of fat is 9 calories, right? It seems nutritionists change there minds about what we should be monitoring every other year.

What are points and how do you determine the 'point' value of a meal? Question

it's easier to eat 3500 calories than it is to work off.

I used to eat those dunkin donut large chocolate chip mm good muffins. I saw a comparrison chart on calories. One of those goes for about 500 calories.
It takes about 45 min to an hour of mountain climbing to burn that off.. Shocked

You have to burn off what you put on..
however you have to eat calories in order to have the strength and increase your metabolism to burn them off.

Carbs are like the gas we put in our car. It's the fuel that gives our bodies the energy to burn. More carbs means more fuel. But you can overfill with carbs to and they will slow you down and make you sluggish.

I agree with RevJP: everything in moderation. That, and lots of veggies! Mr. Green

Yesterday I read a personal blog someone had posted on the internet about her own experience losing about 200 pounds. She exercised and she changed up her diet, but those are pretty obvious. The one thing she did that really stood out for me was that she ate either a salad or a vegetable medley before every lunch and every dinner she ate. This is a hugely good idea because it curbed her appetite so she didn't have as much room afterwards to overindulge on things that are less healthy, and she got lots of veggies that way! I'm starting that today.

Hi Ana,

I've been making my own veggie juices and I drink one for breakfast and during the day I make fruit juice.
I have a hard time "chewing" raw fruits and veggies so this is a good way for me to get those vitamins in.
Sometimes I combine the fruits and veggies and the juice comes out great.
I used an apple, 3 carrots, and 3 celery..and it was good.
Then I tried replacing the apple with tomatoes and that was good too..
I've always loved V8..and now I can make my own V1, V2, V3...LOL..
I found that when I drink the veggie juices I'm not very hungry during the day. They do have a great way of sustaining the body.
Veggies..it's not just for dinner any more.. Very Happy

I was talking to a couple of friends this week and they told me about a scientific study they had read about this past week. The study determined that drinking hot liquids with meals literally melts fat and aids in weight loss.

I have been looking for information on this study but I have not been able to find it.

Is there anyone on this board that has read or can provide more information on this study?
