He went to Hades which is translated as "hell" in many Bibles. It means that He went to an opening in the ground.

Jesus died----He was dead ---- He knew nothing from the time He closed his eyes in death till He awoke in the tomb.
Hades though translated "hell" or "grave" is not talking about a place but a state of being.

I believe it is talking about a both a state of being and a place. A place in the physical sense that is an image of something in a Spiritual Sense.

It is highly unlikely that either Jesus or Paul held to the same definition as you. This kind of "hell" was invented by the Catholic church much later, as can be seen in the history of literature, art and doctrine.

Christina,
Have you ever done an in depth study on hell? I would be interested in what you have to say on the subject based upon your study of that subject. So far, no one has ever given me a clear detailed Biblical description of hell. I have some ideas of my own but would like to hear more and learn more on his very controversial topic.

This idea of Abraham's bossom is spoken of here as a waiting place. Jesus, who spoke this parable, clearly spoke of a further place of torment called here hell (KJV)
fire (NIV) Hades (ESV) flames (NASB).
Interesting though that it was Abraham who spoke to this man in torment.
Lastly note that this parable of Jesus indicates that people who hear of the resurrection will not be persuaded and be saved from this torment.

I think Hell is a place where souls were exiled to.
A place of darkness, chaos & confusion.
But I think it is possible to be released from hell. I dont think hell is eternal for everyone.
I would like to hear your view on the subject.

when you say saved do you mean they will not have to experience torment at all, or that they will experience it but still live?

Thank you for your response. I believe that hell is separation from God. I have always wondered about the Final judgment of humanity. Think about it. Here we are standing in the presence of perfect love. Something that we cannot even begin to grasp. But for those who aren't covered by the blood of Christ, there is shame and embarrassment because Jesus isn't their mediator.
Isaiah 6 talks about Isaiah in the Temple. He saw how dirty he was and he felt nothing but shame when he had his God experience. He only got a little taste of God, we will be there with Him. Then can you imagine what it will be like when He says , depart from me, I never knew you. Now that person is totally separated from the Love of God for eternity. If they retain consciousness or the memory of that love, That would have to be a great torment.
This is just a thought. God Bless you and keep seeking the King. |
