1 thess 5:

9For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

What is missing today in modern time preaching of the gospel and salvation is the fact of scripture that some, before the world began and for the Holy purpose of God, in displaying His salvation to the election of grace, is the undeniable fact, that God has appointed some to eternal wrath..

Paul was careful not to withold these type of flesh hating gospel truthes..

acts 20:

24But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

25And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.

26Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. 27For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

A gospel minister does not shun or avoid neither hold back these unpopular truthes of the gospel..

The counsel of God in salvation and the counsel of God in reprobation..

Paul actually gives us this counsel literally in romans 9:

11(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth

12It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.

13As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

14What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.

15For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

16So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

17For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.

18Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.

19Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?

20Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?

21Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

22What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:

23And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, 24Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?

Tis the counsel of His discrimnating perogatives, to have mercy on whomever He desires [ the elect vs11] and to harden and destroy whomever He desires vs 18 the vessels of wrath]

The word counsel used in acts 20 is

boulç meaning purpose, as in purpose of election in rom 9 11

This is Gods purpose of grace, the gospel of Gods grace which paul puts as a theme acts 20:

24But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

This grace is grounded in election rom 11:

5Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6And if by grace[election], then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

In other words, you are saved by the grace of and in election or works..cant be both..

either one is saved by the Sovereign discriminating mercy/ grace of God, or you are a work monger..

This grace that saved the elect, Has its origin and is given the elect, in christ before the world began..

2 tim 1:

9Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

This is what it is to preach the gospel of grace and not works, its grounded in the eternal purpose of election.

Now, in contrast, and because God would have His dear chosen understand and appreciate His discriminating grace whereby they are saved, He has before the foundation of the world, appointed some to wrath..these are those described in rom 9 as vessels of wrath..

The vessels of wrath and the Vessels of mercy are by nature both wicked..But God being pleased to make His Freewill known, that is His Sovereingty, decided to create men and women to fit them for destruction..

The word appoint is the same word and carries the same force of Ideal in 2 tim 1:

Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

Of course we know this is paul speaking. But lets look at another scripture to aide us in determining how this appointment works in the Divine Counsels.

Jer 1:

4Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

5Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained[appointed] thee a prophet unto the nations.

Notice this appointment is prior to #1 being formed in the belly of our mothers, and #2 before we come out of the womb..

This principle is and should be applied to those who are appointed to wrath, this appointment is before they had any consious exisitence..

God has a eternal plan for each individual to be born in this world, a appointment for the Glory of God..

This appointment is unchangeable as much as pauls appointment was to the apostleship and Jeremiahs to being a prophet..

These scripts were written of old in the eternal counsels of God..jude

4For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Notice crept in unaware, this reminds me of the parable of Jesus in matt 13:

24Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:

25But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

26But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.

27So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

28He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

29But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. 30Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Jesus gives understanding to the tare parable, observe :

36Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.

37He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;

38The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;

39The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

40As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

41The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;

42And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

The end result of the tares the children of the devil sowed by the devil, meaning they are of his seed, these tares will be appointed to everlating destruction as it was, now watch this, prepared or appointed before the world began..

matt 25:

41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

Prepared by whom, who prepared this everlasting fire ? answer God..

This goes back to our text, that some have been appointed to wrath, but the elect, the chosen ones, who are Just as sinful as the non elect, have not been appointed to this eternal purpose of wrath by God, but to obtain salvation..

This is part of the whole counsel of God, which some deny. Those who deny any part of Gods counsel is to be accursed, if one denys the eternal punishment, the never to end punishment by God to the tares, the goats, the children of the devil like acts 13:

9Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him.

10And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

Paul, while His mind under the complete control of The Holy Ghost, termed this man a child of the devil, a tare, one whose destiny is that of being appointed to eternal fire..and what characterized this enemy, notice he perverted the right ways of the lord..

The just ways of the lord. Those who teach against the eternal punishement of of the non elect, are perverting the right ways of the lord..

Paul knew he would not cease, because as Jesus said to some in jn 8:

44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

The lust of their father they will do, not might do, but will do, its been appointed unto them to do it, and God will be Just in their eternal damnation..

The elect are saved from this plight, thats what it means to be saved by grace through faith, for it is the Gift of God [ the the election of grace] not of works, lest any man should boast...

There is no gospel without preaching this hated truth, of reprobation..
