Jonah 3:1-4
And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah a second time saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh that great city and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. So Jonah arose and went unto Nineveh according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of 3 days journey. And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey and cried and said, Yet 40 days and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
This prophesy is one many believe to be false and I must admit was a real stumper for me. But I believe if God can not lie as the scripture says then He definitely can not say something and then not do it, Can He???
There must be an answer and I wanted feedback on what I believe I found.
The term "overthrown" ,according to strongs, is haphak (2015) to turn about or over; change, overturn, return, pervert: - become change, come, be converted , give, .....
So is it possible that what Jonah was prophesing did come true for they did change their ways and were converted, and these are words which define over thrown.
Yet I am still not confident in my understanding of this passage. |

James I don't understand your question if you read the remainder of the chapter it plainly states:

| Is this a false prophesy? Or is there an explanation for this within the original language itself and something was lost in translation? I can't believe God would have one prophesy falsely, this would contradict His word in Deut 18:20-22. |

The answer to why God did not destroy Nineveh is in chapter 4.

Why would God have sent Jonah if He was not going to give them the opportunity. Why tell someone why He is going to destroy their city? The reason is that He was giving them the chance to repent.
God did destroy Nineveh 400 years later. |

James while I was reading today I found the answer to your question.
Jer. 18:7-8
“If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it." |
