In Genesis 37:28 talking about Joseph being sold by his brothers, the Midianites and the Ishmaelites are both mentioned. My grandson wants me to explain why there are two different groups mentioned here and how come there are two different groups mentioned, I do not know how to explain this. Can someone give me an idea of how I deal with this question.
Thank you
Darlene

Hi Darlene7,

Ishmael[I] was son of Abraham by Hagar:
Gen 16:11-12.
Midian[M] was son of Abraham by Keturah:
Gen 25:2.
So I & M were half-brothers.

Now,
see Judges 8:4-26, espec verse 24:
These verses show that all Midianites were Ishmaelites, but not all Ishmaelites were Midianites-----------just as all texans are americans but not all americans are texans.

So this shows that the people who bought Joseph were a mixed band of Ishmaelites and Midianites:
Gen 37:25, 28, 36 and Gen 39:1.

Hope that helps.

with Love and Respect,
atoz
