Hi everyone! A little about me...married with two kids, two dogs, and two cats. I'm on permanent disability for bipolar disorder (which is not fun at all). I was raised a Presbyterian, spent a lot of time with Methodists, and never understood Catholics. I always wondered what made the various religions different. At times, I was sure God existed while other times I questioned that. I currently feel confident that God exists and that He gave us the Bible to guide us during this lifetime. My husband and I are currently involved in a Bible study with Jehovah's Witnesses which I'm finding very intriguing although some of the things I'm being taught go against my lifelong beliefs. With lots of time on my hands, I decided to join this group to (hopefully) clarify my beliefs and learn as much as I can about the Bible. I look forward to discussing things with all of you. |

Hi LoMoCe, and welcome to the forum!
Just be careful with the JWs... They won't allow blood transfusions even to save someone's life, and they won't let their kids celebrate birthdays...

Hi LoMoCe!
Welcome to the board! It's cool that you're open to hearing about other denominational views and beliefs. It's good to seek out knowledge with open eyes. I hope you find what you're looking for |

Hi LoMoCe,
It’s been awhile since I lived in the Boston area, (I wonder if L’abri in Southborough is still there).
Yep. Still is.
(Link to the Boston area “school”)
Link to L’Abri background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L'Abri
(You'll need to cut and paste the text. Apparently this forum has trouble with having an ' in the url.)
But be mindful that we do have people from all sorts of opinions – from atheist, through Seventh Day Adventists, to Preterists, charismatics, and evangelicals. Just don’t be intimated or afraid to ask pointed questions. But I must concur with P# about those JWs.

Welcome aboard L!
I would also provide a word of caution with JW. There are many denomiations out there... and sometimes we start enforsing the one that we 'like' best or is most convienant instead of how closely it follows Biblical teachings.

Thank you all for welcoming me. A couple of things...
I'm in Boston, PA (outside of Pittsburgh) not Boston, Mass.
As for the JW, I was raised to "pretend you're not home" when they came knocking on the door. I got "caught" one day and just started having a nice conversation. For the most part, I can't leave the house (emotionally not physically). They offered a free Bible study which, I admit, was something I felt I could use. Since starting the study about a year and a half ago, they have NEVER asked for money or pushed me to join their religion. I've been invited to attend other Bible studies and Sunday services without any pressure--I have yet to do so. Although they have taught several things that go directly against my upbringing, they show me verses directly from the Bible to back up everything they say. They've answered all of my questions backed up with even more Bible passages. I haven't been able to find fault with the relationship I've developed with them; and yet, I'm not convinced that I want to jump on board. I guess that's one of the reasons I joined this board. |

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to tell you that the JWs are bad people, just that some of their practices such as no blood transfusions and no birthday parties just make no sense.
I would argue that if you're searching for a religion that is as compatible with perfect goodness as possible, then JWs isn't, because it has these obvious flaws that could be improved. _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

Oh.
| LoMoCe wrote: | | As for the JW, ... they show me verses directly from the Bible to back up everything they say. |
The Bible they use is called the New World Translation. I have a copy of the JW NWT and the JW Greek Interlinear text they published. While I have not dealt with the group for quite awhile, I can assure you that their NWT contradicts their own Greek Interlinear New Testament in many places. (Although since it has been, what, at least twenty years since I compared both of their Bibles, I couldn't begin to remember the specifics. Back then, whenever I talked with members of their church I would only permit them to use their own Greek interlinear New Testament (the copy I have is purple). They would get very confused when trying to support their doctrine with their own Bible because it doesn't say what they expect it to, and they started to see the contradictions. Since then, I've never had the need to waste my time with the group again.
But I can certainly give credit where credit is due in the help they've provided you in terms of companionship. God would wish more of His Sons to do the same. (But the piper will have a price to be paid. You just haven't got the bill yet.) See what they say if you ask for a copy of their Greek Interlinear Bible and only allow them to use that one.
