"I'm so Goth, I'm Catholic"

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any expierience of the subculture, and if so what does it mean to you in terms of the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Bible and how you live your life?

Now: Goth music
In my experience, when I talk to Christians, a lot of them seem to have an idea of what 'goth' music is - screaming, psuedo-satanism, sexual taboos (s/m, necrophilia, etc), depression and suicide. This is rarely the case, but I was wondering why so many Christians hold this opinion, when Jesus himself was willing to reach out to those shunned in society - the disabled, prostitutes, sinners...

Is it the media, or just general ignorance?

General ignorance. Most people rely on hearsay for what they "know". It seems that very few people in today's age will actually do research on a subject to find out what it's all about.

It's a shame, considering how much information is actually out there to be discovered.

I think it's the media. Specifically Type O Negative. Aren't they just about the most widely known band that's considered to be Goth? The things you listed above descibe their music pretty well.

I remember seeing a bunch of kids hanging around at the Cornerstone Christian music festival one year who were all dressed in black, with makeup, and looked like they were related to the Adams Family. Just because people are into a certain scene does not mean they're not sincere Christians, and doesn't mean they're buying into all the stuff that people associate with that scene.

And BTW, it is pretty obvious, Type O Negative don't take themselves very seriously. The stuff they write about is for shock value. Offstage, they come off as much more ordinary guys. Their lyrics are often so over the top, they come off as silly. I think they know this very well, and find their own schtick humorous.

When it comes to Type-O, they didn't even start off as a goth band. That's just the shtick that worked for them and they fell into. They're happy to do it because it pays the bills when they aren't working on their other band-what some might say is Pete's real band.

Obviously, a style of music isn't going to be inherently pro or anti christian. There are some great christian metal bands(listening to one right now). Most of it boils down to someone's own inherent bias and their fear of what looks or sounds different coupled with their personal tastes. I don't like country. When I'm old and crotchety, maybe I'll equate people crooning country tunes with devil worshippers. Who knows.

I think country is the true music of the devil. Hell will have bands of demons playing country music everywhere as the condemned souls cover their ears in torment.

Rap and hip hop too. Hell will have rapping demons, bragging about what bigshots they are in that irritating monotone.

And polka as well. Remember the Far Side cartoon with the harps being handed out to all the new souls in heaven, and the accordions being handed out to all the condemned in hell?

Well geeee!...... Thanks Zathrus I guess I'm a demon then, cause I've been playin' & singin' country music for over fifty years. Laughing Of course the last 25yrs it's been country christian! Country is just a style of music. You can take any style of music & turn it into a song for the devil by the the words that you put with that music & how it is sung. Elvis had a beutiful voice I sang a lot of his songs when I was in the nightclubs. But what really turned on the young people of that day was his body work. It filled the halls everytime! Very Happy Very Happy

I'm a demon? Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Guess you better get on your knees and start repentin', Nobby!

Ya know God always asks us to give up the thing that's most dear to us just to show Him that we're truly broken!

Just kidding. I don't believe that stuff.

I look forward to hearing you play whatever music comes from your heart when we are in heaven. Maybe I'll sit in with you for a song or two if you'll have me!

Well...I'm type O-. What does that make me? Since I never heard of them but have seen some of this stuff, I think some of it is pretty off the wall but you've got to remember that that's due to my age. Very Happy Of course, my parents thought rock and roll was off the wall when I was a kid. Remember how that was going to send all the kids to hell in a handbasket?

To my way of thinking, if the message is about Jesus and God and it's reaching the young people, it doesn't really give me that much of a problem. Just for me, the loudness and screaming is not my cup of tea so to speak. But then again, my favorite styles of music is not what appeals to young people. I'd rather reach them with what appeals to them. Just my thoughts.

General ignorance plays a big part in the assumptions, yes. But is it not justified? The image given by this type of music does nothing but add fuel to the fire. God is the Light which is by our imaging standards is "White" so therefore that is what we're attracted to, and not the dark, dreary, scary, and dressed in black.

I probably sound like I'm being rude but thats not how I'm trying to come across. Confused or disgusted I was a part of this crowd for a long time and I know more lyrics to songs in this genre than I care to remember.

This music may make you feel good, but why. Deep down inside, why?

Sinful nature or Righteous yearning?

Hating everyone or Loving one another?

Mutilating yourself out of anger or Denying yourself out of humility?

Robbing a liquor store or Giving to a poor family?

Anarchy or Peace?

Self-expression or A compromise for someone besides yourself?

Slipknot, Danzig/Misfits, all of Psychopathic Records, Slayer, Type O-, Korn, Canibal Corpse, The Romones, NIN, Hatebreed, Sevendust, Sepultura, Metallica, Cradle of Filth, MManson,Cult of the Psychic Fetus, Godhead, don't speak of the things on the right side listed above. Choose your flavor of goth, I can go on forever. Confused or disgusted

What is the underlying message that makes you feel good inside?

Of course this doesn't apply to just gothic music. Music in general and the reason the person writes the music. This was a HUGE part of my life.

Ephesians

5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

5:7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

5:10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
