... I am just wondering. Since I started reading the New Testament straight through instead of listening only to what the Preacher at the pulpit wanted me to hear, I have found instances of women ministering and prophesying. See Matthew 8:15 for one, Acts 21:9 for another.
I need to know. What is our purpose if we are, in some peoples eyes, to be "seen and not heard?"
Thanks,

I think you will find that in the case of Peter's mother-in-law, when she was healed by Jesus, in this instance, she rose and "ministered" to him and the disciples in the sense of tending to their physical needs, indicating that she was again, perfectly healthy. I doubt that she would preach to them, except in terms of gratitude for her healing.
In the case of the virgins in Acts 21:9, they did indeed prophecy in the same manner as those in Acts 2:17-18.
They were under the inspiration of God's Spirit when they spoke. |

Well, the question of whether or not women can prophecy has a pretty simple answer: no.
Women are terrible at telling the future. Not a single woman in history has been clairvoyant; they're just not any good at it.
Of course, you can say exactly the same thing about men. No humans can tell the future. It's impossible because it violates the laws of physics.
I'm surprised that in today's day and age people still believe in soothsaying. |

When you think about it , almost all fortune tellers and syndicated astrologers seem to be women. Most men, who are into prophecying, seem to be connected with Wall Street.
Of course, Wall Street bases its prognostications on available evidence - more or less.
I thought that, "Seen and not heard," applied to children. Woman do like to chatter. What amazes me, is how a group of woman can all talk at the same time, and still understand what everyone is saying.
I see that a lot of contemporary "Biblical prophets" are now picking June 2007 as a time of major worldwide catastrophic events, based on Bible numerology. I guess if you crunch the secret numbers in Scripture correctly, you can deduce these things. |

Yes, women can prophesize, however I'm not sure about leading a church if you mean pastoring a church without a husband (spiritual covering). At my church my pastor is a prophet and his wife is a prohetess. Both he and his wife are annoited with this gift.
During or at the close of church service he or his wife are led to call certain ones out of the audience and speak whatever word God has given him for that specific person. It could be related to current issues, things to come, etc. we have even had an impromptu singer from the audience be called out to sing, by the prophetess becouse God revealed to her that he had a song in his heart. He was nervous and taken off guard, but he sung Open the Eyes of My Heart. My son (4yrs) was prophesized to last weekend at a church we visited by a woman.
There are several scriptures that relate to women proheysizing, more importantly God will use which ever instrument he chooses to do his will. Scripture says that if we dont Praise the Lord, the rocks will cry out to him.
Luke 19:37-40
So Im convinced that God can call a woman or man to preach or prophesize. Luke 19:37-40 |

Hi-----------
Act 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Act 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

No, they most certainly can not. Nobody can. People can't tell what the weather is going to be like next week, let alone when major world events are going to happen years from now. It's simply ridiculous.
Telling the future violates the laws of physics. You guys do believe in the laws of physics, right? |

P, I not really speaking about predictions. In terms of prophesying in the relation to God, the bible is full of prophesy. |

In the Old Testament in particular there are many instances where prophets did predict the future but there are also several in the New Testament. Reading parts of Revelations is kind of eerie to me. I grew up in a town with a decent sized population but the crime rate was low. We opened our doors and our hearts to strangers and there was nothing between us and the outside world. Our windows were left wide-open and if anything was locked it was our screen door at night.
I was a teenager who actually did a fair job of keeping up on current events, especially those occurring in the U.S. I have seen a dramatic increase in crime over the last 2 or 3 decades. It also seems that the types of crimes being committed just did not happen years ago.
There is more familial strife and warfare.
Much of what is going on today was foretold in the bible.

Maybe all divine prophecy is inspired. Maybe it has nothing to do with whether the prophecy was foretold by a man or a woman.
Pete also said:

I do find it interesting that you characterize what goes on between women as "chatter." Your description of seems to downplay the intelligent thought processes and the give-and-take that goes on between women. "Chatter" makes it seem as though what women discuss is unimportant or nonsensical banter.
As far as how women can all talk at the same time and understand what is being said... it's a well-known fact that women are very good at multi-tasking.
Much Luv

Thank you for reminding me of these scriptures.
I recall seeing another post somewhere on this board that made mention of another scripture that stated basically what you have quoted here. (I believe that the scripture being referenced in the other post was somewhere in Revelations but I'm not sure)...

Hi Luvnlife,
Your purpose is as full as any man's purpose and more!
When read in Love as written in Love, these verses in 1 Corin 14 mean:
34Let your women OR MEN WHO ARE IN HATE OF EACH OTHER keep silence: NOT PREACH in the churches:
for it is not permitted unto ANY OF them WHO ARE IN HATE to speak, IE TO PREACH;
but they are commanded to be under obedience IN LOVE OR OVER OBEDIENCE as IN LOVE also saith the law.
35And if they WHO ARE IN HATE will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands OR WIVES at home IN LOVE:
for it is a shame for ANY women IN HATE OR ANY MEN IN HATE to speak in the church OR PREACH AT ANY TIME.
And as you said, proof of the above is that God does reference women in Love as preachers in the Bible: Stephen's dtrs, Deborah, Miriam, the proverbs 31 woman, etc; and he does reference men who shd not preach!smile
in Love of men and women as preachers and as nonpreachers/silent,
atoz |

Hi Luvnlife | luvnlife wrote: | | I need to know. What is our purpose if we are, in some peoples eyes, to be "seen and not heard?" | It is perhaps possible to have a purpose in life other than leading prayer or speaking in church? Besides, the guidelines Paul gave to Timothy and Titus disqualify most brethren as well.
Also check concordance to note the difference between "silent" (= silent) in Corinth and "quiet" (= quiet) in Ephesus.
God bless

Just Curious!
The Apostle Paul said:
| Quote: | | Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. 1Co 14:34 |
Could someone here point me to that Law he speaks of.
Thanks

The laws of physics are human laws. If there is a God, he/she must be above them.
I think accounts of women in the bible are down to the way society was structured at that time; you just have to look at the way women were treated in the book of Genesis, for example, Eve - manipulating, deceitful, and to be punished by God. I'm sure if God was to allow men to be prophets, he would also allow women to be, but if the religious leaders gave them credit by including them in the Bible, it would mean allowing them some power, which could take it away from them!
Something to bear in mind when reading the books of the New testament, not all his disciples shared Jesus' views on women. |
