Every person has been educated by satan's standard of life:
#1.) If it tastes good....eat it !

#2.) If it feels good.....do it !

#3.) If you want it....Get it !

In other words.....Me First !

SELFISNESS

God's program is......Deny Yourself.

Place other people, ahead of yourself.

In other words, think of other people needs, before your own.

The interesting thing is when you put other peoples needs before your own and you do for others, you get so much back. Try it and you'll understand what I mean. Volunteer time in your community, take food or find a way to help a friend or neighbor who has been through a crisis. Go shopping for someone in need or a homeless shelter. Give to a local charity. Spend time with someone who is lonely.

All a person has to do is study the Bible to understand satan's principles, as they are in opposition to EVERYTHING, God says.

For example:
Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden.
God tried to teach the principle of self-denial.

You have five senses with which you can get pleasurable inputs into your nervous system. For example, there are pleasant tastes, pleasant smells, pleasant sounds, etc.

Why would God have given you these wonderfully varied ways of enjoying simple pleasures if He didn't intend you to use them?

Very Good Point !
But, you surely realize that satan has easy access to those sense(s) that God gave in the first place, don't you ?

Jusr look at the experience of Adam & Eve.
They has a Fantastic Garden of which to eat from, absolutely superior, to anything found in the world today.

God merely tested their senses.
With everything they ever needed....could they resist eating from the one tree, that God said not to eat from ?

I read from an artilce one time about 'taste' being the King of all the senses.

Have you ever noticed how children will eat what tastes good to them.....never mind whether it is healthy or not ?

They are governed by taste, not principle.
And add to the fact, that in todays world......more people eat junk foods, than ever before.....a satanic influence ?

Obesity, is at an all time high.

Diseases, are at an all time high.

Without a proper education of what foods are best for the human body, people are governed by taste, than principle.

On the point of appetite......(Genesis 3:1-6), records man fell.

The very first temptation, Christ had to face, was on the point of appetitite, (Matthew 4:3,4).

The "Mark of the Beast" scenerio, soon to come, will be on the point of appetitie.
Revelation 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

How is anyone going to get something to eat, if they cannot buy food ?
*****************************************
Let's jump to the world of business.

"If you want it ....get it" !
Set the principle of God aside, as they will hinder you in getting ahead.

Things like "Thou shalt not steal"........"Thou shalt not bear false witness", ect.....will hinder a business man's goals.

I could go on and on, but you get the idea about some of satan's principles, I trust ?

Sure, but as long as you don't overindulge in those senses, then things are ok. For example, obesity is the result of overindulging in food. Deafness is the result of overindulging in rock concerts, etc.

Do you really have to deny yourself? What's wrong with just finding a happy medium in your sensory inputs? You know, everything in moderation...

Yes, I agree.....that it is possible to take the Biblical conept of, 'Denying oneself' ...to an exreme.

Sure, Jesus said the following........ Matthew 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
BUT.....when balanced with other Bible verse such as.....
Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
2:12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

Then, we gain a better understanding of what is meant by self-denial.
Quote:

Well....some people smoke cigarettes....in moderation, BUT, we know that even just one cigarette, is wrong.
****************************************************************

These quote from a favorite author of mine.....maybe of some help.......
Christ Works From Within.--Men will never be truly temperate until the grace of Christ is an abiding principle in the heart. . . . Circumstances cannot work reform. Christianity proposes a reformation in the heart.

What Christ works within, will be worked out under the dictation of a converted intellect.
The plan of beginning outside and trying to work inward has always failed, and always will fail.--Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 35.

Power of Self-Control Must Be Regained.--One of the most deplorable effects of the original apostasy was the loss of man's power of self-control.
Only as this power is regained, can there be real progress.

The body is the only medium through which the mind and the soul are developed for the upbuilding of character.
Hence it is that the adversary of souls directs his temptations to the enfeebling and degrading of the physical powers.
His success here means the surrender to evil of the whole being.
The tendencies of our physical nature, unless under the dominion of a higher power, will surely work ruin and death.

The body is to be brought into subjection.
The higher powers of the being are to rule.
The passions are to be controlled by the will, which is itself to be under the control of God.
The kingly power of reason, sanctified by divine grace, is to bear sway in our lives.--The Ministry of Healing, pages 129, 130.

Every person has been educated by satan's standard of life:
#1.) If it tastes good....eat it in Hate of what tastes bad!

#2.) If it feels good.....do it in Hate of what feels bad!

#3.) If you want it.Get it in Hate of the unwanted!

In other words.....Me First in Hate of Me Last!

SELF-HATE-ISNESS
*****************************************

God's program is......Deny Yourself Hate of self as any words---Treat yourself to Love of self as all words.

Place other people first & ahead in Love of yourself as last & behind.

Place self first first & ahead in Love of others as last and Behind.

In other words, think of all other people's Need of Love AS your own by first thinking of yourself AS all other people. Matthew 22:36-40

in Love,

Moderation, is one thing to one person, BUT another thing to another person.

Is self-denial vs moderation a Christian/Pagan dichotomy?

"And he said to them all, 'If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." Luke 9:23

vs

"Nothing in excess" (a motto of Apollo)

Just a (probably excessively generalized and perhaps sensational) observation that came to me while reading this thread. But the idea of following Jesus does seem to me to lean more towards asceticism than moderation...
