The offense was not cannbalism (eating of human flesh) but taking the symbols used in passover and applying them to Himself.
Prior to the last supper the Jews participated in Passover as one of their holiest of celebrations. Jesus and His disciples clearly were participating in this great symbolic feast.
Not only are there several cups drunk as symbols (including one titled the cup of redemption)but the bread of suffering the Afikommen is broken like Jesus was broken (on our behalf).
One needs to study the Passover to understand the connections between the two covenants and the symbolic means by which it is brought into being. In the original passover there was no wine but the actual blood of a lamb on the doorposts.(the wine used in later passovers was a symbol of the blood).
The only qualification for the participants was a willingness to participate and to apply the symbolic blood on the doorposts, eat the food and get ready to go.

your wrong and I can prove it...
Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

bread and wine are offered accroding to the order of malchisadek (sorry aboutspelling) who as Gods Priest and King (notice similarity with Christ) offered bread and wine sacrafices to god.

All the references to the bread and wine are just bread and wine. This order of priesthood didn't change the wine into blood either.
The people were rightly shocked by Jesus' identifying Himself with the Paschal lamb. Every good Jew knew the story of the original passover, to reach down into their very soul and claim such a special identity was blasphemy (at least they would easily think that it was since they didn't recognize Jesus as thier messiah). Every year they ate the flesh of the Lamb without their understanding how Jesus was to fullfill it. |
