It's about time!
He was a terrible secretary of defense. America has a history of totally not understanding the enemy and then going through unnecessary hardships because of it. Rummy added another feather to that cap with Iraq.
It's really funny how you guys always seem to put someone who doesn't have any serious training in military theory into the position of secretary of defense. Robert Macnamara is another good example of someone who apparently never read Sun Tzu's Art of War and apparently never took the old "know thine enemy" adage to heart.
You guys have some of the finest military minds on the planet, both in the Pentagon and teaching at West Point; how on Earth do you keep putting these losers in charge of the military???
Bush's new man, Robert Gates, also doesn't seem to have any solid grounding in military theory or history. He seems to be more on the cloak and dagger side of things... _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

Here is a song by Merle Haggard that just seems appropos!
Song By Merle haggard
Yeah I'm bringin' home some good news
Got some things you'll be glad to hear
Like I'm leavin' town and won't be back
Around just long enough to get my gear
There won't be any goodbye kisses
Well I'm puttin' on my leavin' shoes
This is the end we're through it's over yeah
I'm bringin' home some good news
Well I was sittin' downtown in a tavern
And I made up my mind to go
And I knew you would be so glad to be free
I just thought to call you to let you know
Oh you can tell all your backdoor daddys
That your big daddy's done blew a fuse
This is the end we're through it's over yeah
I'm bringin' home some good news
To you I been known as bad news
Well I'm changin' my first name
And I'm givin' you your freedom baby
That old race won't kinda change
Yeah go to hide your lookman slippers
I won't be lookin' around for blues
This is the end we're through it's over
Yeah I'm bringin' home some good news
Good news there's some good news for you honey
I'm bringin' home some good news
I'm bringin' home some good news honey _________________ Proverbs 27:17

Becuase we have a history of civilian control of the military...it's a foundation stone of America.
I'll see what I can dig up about Gates' history, but just becuase he is a civilian with CIA background doesn't mean he doesn't under military theorty or history Lots of smart guys never wore combat boots.... _________________ Links of note:"Review for Doubting Christians"

I don't claim that the secretary of defense must have worn combat boots or even that he's ever been in the military. I would be perfectly happy with a super-expert professor of military theory / history. _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

I miss the days of Colin Powell....
He should run for president, I would vote for him twice... _________________ JP's Mind - my blog

I was fortunate to be on his staff for a while - a more intensely intelligent and personable man I have never met. _________________ JP's Mind - my blog

I liked Powell before he went to the U.N. and oversold all of the intelligence claims to Iraq. I think it's terrible how the Bush administration used him.
But forget about him running for president... I find it hard to believe that America will elect a black man any time soon... _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."
