People like Phelps make my job as an atheist easy! You guys really should muzzle up your crazies so that they don't make the rest of you look bad by association!
Does he really think that fire and brimstone are going to rain from the sky and destroy America???
Incidentally, here's my favorite Phelps quote of all time: "God doesn't hate them because they're fags... They're fags because God hates them!"

I saw that video and thought it was a skit, didn't realize this was a real person.
It went from funny to scary real quick..........

Michael Moore did a really funny piece on Phelps. He got together a whole bunch of gay people and followed Phelps around, basically harassing him. Usually I would find such a thing to be obnoxious, but Phelps deserves any harassment that he gets, since he engages in hard-core harassment of others himself.
For example, he goes and pickets the funerals of gays who have died of AIDS and tells their families that they're in hell now... The guy is totally crazy.

Incidentally, what is the Biblical argument against Phelps? Is it that he is over-emphasizing the Old Testament? i.e. under the New Covenant, God no longer destroys entire cities because some of the people in it are gay?

I of course agree with Jesus' teachings here, but I don't think this passage really applies to Phelps. How do we know that Phelps is actually wrong when he draws parallels between Sodom and America and when he says that God will destroy America just like He destroyed Sodom?
My argument would be that Phelps is stuck in the OT. If he were Jewish, then maybe he could say these things. God doesn't do stuff like destroy cities anymore! Is this the correct Biblical argument to use against Phelps, or is there a better one?

Scripturally Phelps is accurate to condemn gays, and he is also accurate to say they are banished to hell.
This is yet another point why I personally do not adhere to the absolute authority of scripture. Also, it is a point where I feel scripture is erred.

dude it ain't just gays....they(him and his church) go to funerals of service men and women that died in iraq and other places and protest the funerals with signs that say...
all the good we get out if iraq is a dead soldier...
but the bible teaches against homosexuality...and it is a sin...and should be called such...but...
nowhere are we to hate or make a public protest against the way others live.... |
