The following was posted over on our sister board and it was so profoundly true, I thought it should be seen and read over here too. MattD is the author:
Quote:
I was raised a christian but lost my way during my late teens and early twenties. It's not that I lost my belief in God it was more that I lost my belief in myself. I always thought that you had to be perfect to be a christian, it took me awhile to realize you had to be imperfect to be a christian. I don't know why I read boards like these, sometimes it makes me sad.

The truth is that I have never been that great of a person. I curse, I get angry, I sin. I am far from perfect but at least I have a sense of reality.
When I am alone and I spend time thinking and contemplating my life and how it fits in this world, it seems very foolish to discount God arbitraily. It is my belief from personal experiences that mankind as a whole is very self centered and it is this same self centered behavior that drives our desire to be more than what we really are.

By the facts we are nothing more than a race of pillagers, rapers, pedophiles, thiefs, war mongers, killers, and crazy's. Show me a person that is normal and I will open his closet and show you what he hides. We as a race have raped the earth, we have or are currently destroying everything that is beautiful and wonderful. Yes, we as a race are very intelligent and capable of making conclusions about our world as you can obviously see from our very intelligent track record.

Excuse me while I spit on the ground that mankind walks on. We are pathetic, as a whole we are entirely pathetic and self devouring. Take creationism and evolution out of the picture and you still have the same group of pathetic people. You can stand on a mountain top and tell me how intelligent you are because you graduated from Harvard, hold a PHD, and have written the theory of 'Self Imploding Dark Matter' in reality your just a childish fool that knows only what he has been told.

The fact is if you take mankind out of this world, you have a perfect world. The fact is that this world holds secrets that may never be answered. We have not even started mapping the oceans, we have barely travelled to the moon. Yet! We yell at the top of our lungs how many answers we have. Foolish fools with foolish ideas.

The truth is we are afraid of our destiny, we are afraid to have to be accountable and so we ignore what is in front of our faces in favor of ignorant half truths. You can try and hide behind your childish facts or your enormous amount of ignorant knowledge, but in the end your God will call you and he will ask 'why'.

I believe because that is the only thing we have. Your silly to look at this world and deny a creator. Your silly to believe that you know more than you really do. If you take every bit of knowledge in this world and compare it to what we don't know it is like comparing a few grains of sand to an entire beach. You can have your few grains of sand as for me and my brothers and sisters in Christ we will take the truth.

Infinite sadness is having a child that does not want you as a father. Infinite sadness is seeing people deny without thinking.
Infinite sadness is the foolish human race and all the pain it has caused, when given the gift of life.

Being intelligent is being aware of what knowledge you lack, being a fool is being aware of only what knowledge you have.

and all I could do is just mumble and Amen. Confused or disgusted

that's depressing. So my sense is that he believes in God in the hope that something will be better than "this"...ok, that's a point of view but a pretty sad one.

Nothing in his argument gives evidences of a personal God...in fact, it points to the opposite. I go back to my question of why an omnibenevolent, omnipresent, omnipotent being rewards SOME while allowing MOST to suffer.

Personally, I take a more optimistic view...yes, as the OP pointed out, humans are capable of some pretty terrible things...routinely...(and normally in the name of God BTW...reference to Islam, Spanish Inquisition, Salem Witch Trials...yada yada).

The thing that strikes me most about mankind is how we, alone among most species have been able to resist the force of Entropy [that's the universal law that states that things move from a highly ordered state [such as a solid plate] to a disordered state [a collection of porcelein dust and shards] over time...nothing moves from a disordered state to an ordered state without the application of energy and/or mass]...Humans are able to resist/delay/slow this trend. While our corperal form inevitably deteriorates over time...our humanity does not...in fact, over time...we've become MORE human. (yes, there are thousands of examples of inhumanity, but that's nothing new, my argument is that OVERALL, we're more "organized" than we were 5000 years ago...

I think it's neat and it gives me hope. Think of it like movies. MattD has given you the Mad Max view of the future...I prefer Star Trek Smile

I don't see it that way. It is our choice... not His. God gave us Christ as a free gift for our salvation. It is our choice whether or not we accept Him.

Embarassed Careful... you are starting to sound like a YEC! Some in these parts get kinda upset when we start making applications of 2LoTD that don’t deal directly to energy.

This is assuming our original state, as outlined in the Bible, was not the Garden of Eden. If that is the standard... we have fallen pretty far. I believe this only makes his post even truer as it demonstrates our own egotistical tendencies (despite tombs of historical evidence otherwise), thinking we are indeed getting better (a form of social-Darwinism if you will) which is clearly not the case.

Even without humans natural disasters would still be around. Is a world with constant earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes a perfect world?

You may be able to make the argument that we as a race have affected hurricanes and tornadoes with industrialization and all, but earthquakes have been constant. They aren't affected by what we do (for now, we may eventually be able to slow them down or accidentally increase them).

FFT... this article was cut and pasted from Christian Viewpoints. If you want to engage Matt on this post you'll have to venture over there as I don't think he is a memeber here.

Yes, the avatar has become a popular means to bolster faith and I believe that disciples of Christ are to clothe our self with Him, to put Him on and to never take Him off, which means that we are covered by the apparel that is Christ and His vesture is," And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon the white horse was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood:" Rev.9:11-13

We are to wear Him everywhere we go, so that everyone who sees us sees Him first and know, from a position of absolute spiritual power, there are none who threaten Him and none whom we should fear, since we are His property and we know that He protects His own property," For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another."

I happen to agree that the human race is terrible, and I'm a bit ashamed to be part of the species.

That being said, humans might be able to AVERT the worst natural disaster of all (short of the Sun going nova), an extinction-level asteroid impact, and ironically, we would use HUGE nuclear weapons to do it...

So we aren't TOTALLY bad.

He used to be.

Anyway, I registered at CV a while back but never got my confirmation email (you also never said which sister forum it was at, there are a lot of them). Apparently my account over there is working now, dunno.
