Wrong spelling Rev.

Fair to middling. Middling denoting average and usually in refference to how someone felt or their health.

It was also a term used by cotton buyers in the South and probably else where. They would take a sample of the cotton from a bale and pull the fibers apart grading it as "short middling" "long middling" according to the length of the cotton fiber, thus determing the price to pay.
