|
|
There have been ballets about Samson and Delilah, movies, and so on. I will attempt to give Samson a biblical view in this study. Any comments are welcome.
Samson was the son of Manoah from the Tribe of Dan. It was during a time in Israel when they, (the Israelits) did evil in the eyes of The Lord (Jehovah) and as a consequence delivered them to the Philistine's for 40 years. Manoah's wife was barren. The Angel of The Lord came to Manoah's wife to tell her she would bear a son. He told not to drink any strong beverage or wine while she was pregnant and not to eat anything unclean (or Kosher). He told her that when he was born that a razor should never touch his head, as he was to be a Nazarite from the womb. This child would deliver Israel from the Philistines.
When Manoah's wife told Manoah about the visit of the angel, (who she said had a face like A Son of God), he went out and prayed and asked God what he must do to to the boy that woule be born to him.
Later, when she was alone, the angel once again appeared to her. This is what happened:
Jdg 13:10 And the woman hurried and ran, and told her husband, and said to him, Behold, the Man has appeared to me, the one who came to me the other day.
Jdg 13:11 And Manoah arose and went after his wife, and came to the Man, and said to Him, Are You the Man who spoke to the woman? And He said, I am.
Jdg 13:12 And Manoah said, Now let Your words come to pass. How shall we order the child, and what shall we do to him?
Jdg 13:13 And the Angel of Jehovah said to Manoah, Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful.
Jdg 13:14 She may not eat of all that comes from the vine, neither let her drink wine nor strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing. Let her do all that I commanded her.
Jdg 13:15 And Manoah said to the Angel of Jehovah, I pray You, let us keep You until we have made a kid ready for You.
Jdg 13:16 And the Angel of Jehovah said to Manoah, Though you keep Me, I will not eat of your bread. And if you will offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to Jehovah. For Manoah did not know that He was the Angel of Jehovah.
Jdg 13:17 And Manoah said to the Angel of Jehovah, What is Your name, so that when Your sayings come to pass we may do You honor?
Jdg 13:18 And the Angel of Jehovah said to him, Why do you ask after My name in this way? Yea, it is Wonderful.
Jdg 13:19 And Manoah took a kid with a food offering, and offered it upon a rock to Jehovah, and did wonderfully. And Manoah and his wife looked on.
Jdg 13:20 For it happened when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, the Angel of Jehovah went up in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it and fell on their faces to the ground.
Jdg 13:21 But the Angel of Jehovah did not appear any more to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that He was an Angel of Jehovah.
Manoah told his wife that they would surely die since they had seen the Face of God. Manoah's wife told him that since God took their burnt offering and showed them these things, she did not believe that.
Samson was born and Jehovah blessed him.

Part 2
When Samson came of age, he asked his father and mother to get him a wife from among the Philistine's. They could not understand why Samson would want a wife from among the Philistine's and did not realize that The Lord (Jehovah) wanted this, as he was looking for an occasion against the Philistine's, who were still in rule at that time.
On Samson and his parents trip down to meet the woman, they met a lion. The Lord (Jehovah) came mightily upon Samson and he tore the lion apart with his bare hands. He did not tell his parents that he had done this. After he had met the woman, he found the carcass of the dead lion swarming with bees, and he took honey from the body, ate it, and gave some to his parents, although he did not tell them where the honey came from.
I will stop here for now. Does anyone reading this knows what this means? What does the lion and the honey represent? I don't know. I once asked my mother about years ago and she said it was "The Lion of Judah". Does anyone have any idea what it is about?
I would appreciate any answers.
Part 3 will follow later. It will be a couple of days since I have a final test tomorrow in my accounting class. _________________ Then everyone who shall confess Me before men, I will confess him before My Father who is in Heaven. (Mat 10:32)

Hi ChristineS, I really haven't thought about it!
a lion sometimes represents power. Sometimes thought of as a King.
It may have been to show the incredable strength that the Lord had given Samson.
I'm sure that Lion & also the bees had a meaning.
I would be interest to know myself.
Thanks Sis, _________________ Much Love Nobby

Pro 24:13 My son, eat thou honey, because [it is] good; and the honeycomb, [which is] sweet to thy taste:
Pro 24:14 **So [shall] the knowledge of wisdom [be] unto thy soul:** when thou hast found [it], then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.
Pro 25:16 Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.
Pro 25:27 [It is] not good to eat much honey: so [for men] to search their own glory [is not] glory
Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isa 7:15 Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
Honey is the wisdom and knowledge given by God. The manna in the wilderness tasted like honey, IOW, had a form of knowledge referring to the law. This was not the hidden manna that was to come spoken of in Rev which is Jesus.
Mar 1:6 And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
The honey here is referred to as being wild because John represents the old covenant under the law and Israel is referred to as one who has grown wild. Ephraim is symbolic of the ten tribes of Israel who were seperated from Judah.
Hsa 8:8 Israel is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein [is] no pleasure.
Hsa 8:9 For they are gone up to Assyria, **a wild ass ** alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers.
The dead lion which still had honey ( a form of wisdom and knowledge) was Judah.
Hsa 11:12 Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.

Part 3, The Wedding Feast:
Samson had a 7 day wedding feast with 30 young men. It says that this is what they used to do in those days. Samson gave them a riddle, if they would answer it, Samson would give them 30 linen blouses and changes of garments, and they could not, they would give the same to Samson.
The Riddle:
Jdg 14:14 And he said to them, Out of the eater came forth food, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And in three days they were not able to declare the riddle.
The men told Samson's wife to lure the answer from Samson and if she did not they would burn her father's house. So she lured the answer from Samson, and he gave her the answer and she told the men. Jehovah's spirit once again came upon Samson and he killed 30 men and took the spoil and he gave 30 garments to those who answered the riddle. Samson's wife was given to Samson's companion, who had served as a friend.
Does anyone know what this means? I really don't know. It seems that a person can read something and not know what it is meant by it. I welcome any answers on this. _________________ Then everyone who shall confess Me before men, I will confess him before My Father who is in Heaven. (Mat 10:32)

I find it interesting how the 30 men through coersion, fear, and ill gotten gain, were rewarded even still. and 30 innocent men were killed for them.
I understand that Samson had made a bargain and that he kept his word, it just seems like there should have been a breach of contract or something.
but then his wife should have not listened to those that were threatening her and her family. she loved the world more than having faith in her husband.
sorry ChristineS...i'm in travel mode and it's hard to keep a signal out here. just a quick thought there...but it goes deeper than that..
I'm not posting because I don't want to study, I'm not posting because I have trouble staying connected...
I'm really enjoying your posts.
