John 17:12

Just wanted to get some others input on John 17:12.

In the KJV Our Lord says:
While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name.
Also:
John 17:11 Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou has given me, that they may be one, as we are.

I am a happy new believer and well, I have a friend that is a Jehov-hs Witness.
She keeps insisting that G-D name is Jehov-h, and says that my Lord Jesus is only a angel.....she is really getting me confused. Especially with the name thing. That she says only their organization honors and uses......Help Me!

Just my little stupid opinion...but I really think God wants us to live..well, it's actually our choice..but I would be more concerned with how our lives are effecting others and what we can Pro-actively do with the teachings to live life to the fullest....

Our Lord is saying to to his Father in heaven that while He was here on earth He kept them safe, with the power His Father had giving Him. He had guarded them and not one of them was lost. Except the one that betrayed Him. (He's talking here about His diciples)

Jesus is saying to His Father: I am no longer in the world, I'm coming to you.
My followers are still in the world
But to keep them safe by the power of the name You have given Me! (Jesus)
Then they will be one with each other, just as You and I are one!

Our God uses other names in the bible and one of them is "Jehovah"! That's what they are calling themselves God's Witnesses!
But I would suggest you study your bible and be carefull of false witnesses! Because anyone that tells you that Jesus was anyone less than the Son of the living God, and that He lives and sets at the right hand of His Father in heaven! Is Wrong!!
We can only reach God thru His Son (Jesus) who died on the cross as a sacrfice for all our sins. But Yea!! He's alive!!

Hi Herb, be careful and beware is my advice! Don't forget why John penned 'his' gospel. John 20:31:

"But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name"

My advice is keep talking and studying with your friend but beware. Discuss the scriptures and not 'The Organisation's views' and remember the 'New World Translation' (the JW's bible) has been doctored to diminish Jesus to a mere angel and not the true member of the God-head that He is.

herb, the devil is just trying to mess ya up and get ya all confused so that you wont see the truth.... bcuz you are new with God and he dont like that... so you will be facing some trials and tests,... but you have to resist them.. and rebuke that devil away... pray.. God will help ya through it all.. and if this friend is confusing you.. then pray about that too.. he will answer you with the truth.... power in prayer.. praise God.

Verses like Colossians 1:15 could indicate that Jesus was created. But if you read further, through Colossians 1:18, it becomes clear that “first born” means God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) occupies the first place in everything.
Is Jesus God? Here are some of the verses that prove that Jesus is God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. (John 1:1-3) A created “Angel of the Lord” would not be the creator. This can be sidestepped by saying God created Jesus, and then Jesus created with God help, everything else, but the interpretation is absurd. First you have to change “the Word was God” to mean something else and you have to say the opposite of “nothing came into being” by saying Jesus came into being (Col. 1:16-17).
“…I am the First and I am the Last, there is no God besides Me. Isa. 44:6. “… Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. Rev. 1:17 I think it is inescapable that scripture is teaching that God and Jesus are the First and the Last, and therefore Jesus cannot be “apart” (a created being) from God. He must be, instead, a part of God. (The Son!)
“who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped.” Phil. 2:6. This verse proves that Jesus is co-equal with God (the Father) and took the role of a created being. This verse nullifies the argument that the position of Jesus in the Trinity (the Son) suggests that He was created by the Father. It also says that Jesus is qualitatively the same type of being as God.
In summary, Jesus is God. We should trust Him, worship Him, give thanks to Him and glorify his Name. There are at least another dozen sets of verses that credit Yahweh and Jesus with the same attribute or action. Jesus is God.

I want to Thank everyone for responding.
I practiced Orthodox Judiasm, stopped practicing for about 20 Yrs. and now have been blessed to meet Yeshua (Jesus).
The name Jehov-h was strictly requested not to be spoken aloud. This certain name was ONLY to be used in Silent Prayer.

I guess that is why when I meet Jesus, and had not read and mediated on the New Testament, I was easily throw into confusion by this JW. In my heart I know that God know who you are praying to, but she is very persuasive.
Thank you to all who responded and confirmed what I felt to be true.
I know satin can work thru people, especially if they have to much pride and are dependent on a organization to interput scriptures. That is what I am finding out about JW's.
