John 2:20: Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
Forty usually refers to a time of trial or learning period of some sort.
Six usually refers to an amount of time to complete the creation of something.
And Jesus said it would take him three days what it took man to do in forty and six.
Forty:
Gen 7:12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
Gen 8:6 And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:
Exd 16:35 And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.
Exd 24:18 And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.
Exd 34:28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
Num 13:25 And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.
Num 14:33 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your wh**edoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
Num 14:34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, [even] forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, [even] forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
Let's stop here for a moment and look at what was going on in these periods of 40.
It was raining, they were eating bread from heaven, Moses was writing,
they were searching, they were wandering, they were held responsible for their actions.
what else?
Deu 2:7 For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God [hath been] with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
Deu 8:2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, [and] to prove thee, to know what [was] in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
Deu 8:4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.
They were working and they was walking with the Lord and they lacked nothing.
They were to remember that they was led there to learn humbleness and to prove their own hearts, whether they would keep doing good or not.
While they walked with God they remained clothed and healthy.
Deu 9:25 Thus I fell down before the LORD forty days and forty nights, as I fell down [at the first]; because the LORD had said he would destroy you.
Deu 25:3 Forty stripes he may give him, [and] not exceed: lest, [if] he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee.
Jos 5:6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people [that were] men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD sware that he would not shew them the land, which the LORD sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
Jdg 3:11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
Jdg 8:28 Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.
During that time there was humbleness and prayer for forgiveness.
disobedience and strife was to be removed so only that which is good remained.
So a punishment was set in place of a certain amount. And after chastiment came rest and quietness for a duration of time.
Let's see, if I put this together...
It was raining bread from heaven, which was the words given to moses, to put in writing the answers they had been searching for. And while they wandered they found that they were resposible for their own actions.
They were working and they was walking with the Lord and they lacked nothing.
They were to remember that they was led there to learn humbleness and to prove their own hearts, whether they would keep doing good or not.
While they walked with God they remained clothed and healthy.
During that time there was humbleness and prayer for forgiveness.
disobedience and strife was to be removed so only that which is good remained.
So a punishment was set in place of a certain amount. And after chastiment came rest and quietness for a duration of time.
ok so far?
