Hey guys,
I'm a new member and love this place. I recently watched Mel Gibsons The passion of the Christ and was wondering what any JW's might think of the movie. By the way, The entire Christian church including the Catholic church has united in supporting this movie, so were not all that different. |

You might be interested in knowing that Mel Gibson is a member of an ultra-right wing Catholic group and the entire picture is based on the 'stations of the cross'... 8) |

But I've seen the movie and it follows the bible quite well. And Mel never said that, it was movie critics that said that |

| mel might not have said it, but i saw the movie and that it followed the stations of the cross -- all 14 of them -- was one of the first things i noticed. and yes it was very scriptual for the most part. though there were some things i could argue with. |

But Mel doesn't have to say that - he made the movie to say that. In fact, I believe his father spouted off to the press a week before it's release about the movie, what it meant to him, etc.
Is it important that the movie represents a viewpoint that is predominantly Catholic? 8) |

The movie hasn't opened here in the UK yet.
May I ask why you are interested in JW's oppinions of the film?
When I see it I'll let you know |

| What is this 'Stations of the Cross'. I have never heard of that. Must be because I am not well versed in Catholic beliefs... |

One of the most popular Catholic devotions, the Stations of the Cross commemorates 14 events in the traditional view of the Passion of the Christ. I visited a Catholic Retreat in the Portland Oregan area and walked along a path in the woods. Every 30 meters or so, by the side of the path would be a display, a depiction of an event. I stood at each station and considered Christ and my relation to Christ. Here are the Stations of the Cross.
1. Jesus is Condemned
2. Jesus takes up his Cross
3. Jesus falls for the first time
4. Jesus meets His mother
5. Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry His Cross
6. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
7. Jesus falls for the second time
8. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem
9. Jesus falls for the third time
10. Jesus is stripped of His garments
11. Jesus is nailed to the Cross
12. Jesus dies on the Cross
13. Jesus is laid in the arms of Mary
14. Jesus is laid in the tomb
I am not a Catholic but I did not find it difficult to keep my focus on Christ and off my rejection of some traditional Catholic views. |

1 Cor. 10:14: “My beloved ones, flee from idolatry.” (An idol is an image or symbol that is an object of intense devotion, veneration, or worship.)
Ex. 20:4, 5, JB: “You shall not make yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything in heaven or on earth beneath or in the waters under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them.” (Notice that God commanded that his people not even make an image before which people would bow down.)
I gather you are not Catholic, and feel that the cross (not crucifix) in your church does not mean the same for the attendees. Keep in mind that the Catholic church conceived of adopting this symbol of worship several centuries after the apostles died off the scene. Anyone that claims early Christians used the cross, in any way in their worship, has been mislead.
Anything of Catholic origin, or more to the point, not Scripturally supported, I avoid. I think it best that you provide the verses that demonstrate that the Bible encourages use of the cross in Christian life or makes an exception for this contrivance of man. |

| Whether one admits it or not there would be no Christian church in existence today without the Catholic church. For they indeed were the prominent church from the time of the apostles, up until the time of Luther. True, false doctrines crept in, but the church was ALL Catholic from it's beginnings. Only an idiot would argue against church history. |
