God only wrote 10 commandments on tablets of stone...with his very own finger, (Exodus 31:18)....and he added NO MORE, (Duet. 5:22).
It is a serious error to speak of the 10 commandments as being written by Moses.
The Law of God as written by God, himself, ...not Moses.
The laws of Moses were written in a book (not stone)...by Moses himself, (Exodus 24:4,7...Duet. 31:19). |

| just a point of clarification. Yes the commandments were imprinted on tablets of stone and given to Moses, but to be sure, moses also wrote those same commandments later, so in technically unless someone denies the commandments were written by God and only by moses, there is no error. |

Yes, I was only trying to show the difference between the Law of Moses, and the 10 that God wrote out himself.
Unless a person can see the difference between the 2...it leads to much confusion when one comes to the writings of Paul. |

Is the "LAW OF MOSES" one in which Moses conceived in his very head, and wrote upon papyrus with his "very own finger"? Or is it one that God dictated to Moses to write down and share with the people?

Actually, according to Exodus there were two sets of tablets. Upon seeing the golden calf, Moses broke the first set, which included the Ten Commandments as written by God's own hand:
| Ex 20:3-17 wrote: | You shall have no other gods before me
You shall not make for yourself an idol
You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy
Honor your father and your mother
You shall not murder
You shall not commit adultery
You shall not steal
You shall not bear false witness
You shall not covet |
The second set, Moses wrote himself, when God commanded "Write down these words":
| Ex 34:14-26 wrote: | You shall not worship any other god
You shall make for yourself no molten gods
You shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread
The first offspring from every womb belongs to me
You shall work six days, but on the seventh you shall rest
You shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks
Three times a year all your males are to appear before the Lord God
You shall not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leavened bread
You shall bring in the very first of the first fruits of your soil into the house of the Lord
You shall not boil a kid in its mother’s milk |
Interestingly, only three of the original ten appear in the second version.

God laid down the Ten Commandments and then He detailed them.
The levitical law was a detailed elaboration on the Ten. It's kind of like the difference between preaching and teaching. I could preach to someone that they should follow God, and that's one thing. Then, it would be in their best interest if I taught them the magnitude of just what it means to follow God. See what I mean? But remember: Paul said that the law was holy and just. (Romans 7) The law...the WHOLE law was from God, but people have always tended to not understand what God was doing when He gave it, which was to show us that it was so minute in its detail and righteousness and that we come terribly short of it because of the sin nature. Truth: God's law must be followed perfectly, because He's a perfect God and can accept nothing less. That leaves us knowing that we need a Savior who DID follow it perfectly, and by dependance (faith) in His finished work, God imputes perfection unto us. Isn't that wonderful?!

CrossDelivered,
While this is true concerning Leviticus, I was not quoting Leviticus. I was talking about the two different versions of the Commandments themselves within Exodus.
How do you interpret that?

Just something I noticed ....
Mark 10:19
Here we see Jesus list the "ten" commandments but he only details five of them. The ones that mention what people should do, there is no mention of the ones which apply to God.
In addition Jesus adds an Extra commandment : "do not defraud."
Perhaps Jesus had a more accurate version of Exodus than we have today. |

I know this post is rather old, but if I may I'd like to add a small correction.
We know that the ten commandments were written on stone, and handed to Moses by God in Exodus 31:18. Upon seeing the golden calf after coming down the mountain Moses dropped the tables, slapped his forehead and yelled, "Oy vey!"
The first copy machine ever, the finger of God rewrote those laws on blank tables hewn out of stone by Moses, but written by God:
Exodus 34:1
And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.
Exodus 34:4
And he (Moses) hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.
God himself said He would "write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables."
I'll take him at His word. |

I know this post is rather old but....
Which law placed "inside" the Ark of the Covenant and covered with the mercy seat and which law was placed on the "outside" of the Ark of the Covenant and sprinkled with blood as a "witness against" the children of Israel?
What is the significance of this "technicallity"? |

In the new testament Jesus said in (Matthew 4:17-...repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand) and in (Matthew 4:19, And He saith unto them, Follow me and I will make you fishers of men)also many other things He saith or commanded such as ...let your light shine
...love your enemies
...lay up for yourselves
treasure in heaven..
...seek ye first
...judge not...
...seek and ............
...fear not...
...render therefore...
49? commands in all, then He added in (John 14:21-He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me:and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Jesus said in (Matthew 28:20- Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen) |
