That's the way I see it SS.
Nobby | Your right Nobby,
One mouth spoke the words, BUT, many different people, from many different countries heard in their own native tongue.
SO then, you could say that it was a gift of the hearing, lol.
BUT then, with that theory in mind, the gift of tongues in today churches, is proven false.
WHY..... because the gift of tongues is an understood language, in the ears of 'all' the people there.
In other words, if a person cannot understand what is being said.....of what value is it ? _________________ Matthew 5:11 Blessed are ye, when [men] shall revile you, and persecute [you], and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. |

SS, don't you understand that this same thing happens today! One speaks in tongues & another will interpret it. Many times God gives the interpret to more than one. It happened to me once, at that time I had never interpreted before so I held back & God gave it to another member. It was so near to the message that he gave me that I knew it was the same! Worded a little different but the same! That made a strong believer out of me!
If an English speaking person spoke in unknown tongues & God gave the interpreting a man who only speaks Spanish, would not he hear it in his only language?

Nobby,
Concerning this quote - "Now, God does have a true gift of tongues, BUT it is not in church where everyone already speaks the same language. "
I just have to ask, does everyone in your church speak the same language ? |

Yes they do, what has that to do with it. God speaks through a person, another interprets. The message is for the whole church. It is always for the church group as a whole.
That's just one way God speaks to His church. He speaks to a person through a word of knowledge. When spoken it's usually a direct answer to someones prayer.
Sometimes for the church
God Bless You,

I was just wondering why SS would make this statement. And although I did not believe it I wanted to know myself for a fact if indeed someone went to a church where all speak the same language and the gift of tongues are present. I myself have never experienced this situation, that is also why I asked. |

Forgive me James I didn't I didn't realize that sounded so harsh until you quoted it back to me. I'm sorry!
James, usually only one person(not always the same one will interpret) in the group that God gives the interpretation to. Of coarse they speak in English, this edify's the whole church group.
I know it's been said on these threads & it's true, it is much better to prophesy, than to speak in tongues.

Where do you fellowship Nobby? It sound pretty good.
From your comments it sounds like you have witnessed the Corinthian model of the operation of the Spiritual gifts.
I was having a discussion with RevJP where I was contending that the following verses should be applied litterally and for today. JP seems a good guy but we just don't see eye to eye on this issue. But I must say his position is in the majority.
You know the verses well and I believe it was evident that after several chapters of Paul rebuking the Church of Corinth for several infractions that Paul made a conluding statement directing them to use tongues in an orderly way.
In the conclusion he says: 1Co 14:26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
1Co 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
1Co 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
1Co 14:29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
1Co 14:30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
1Co 14:31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
1Co 14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
So it is clear that the Corinthian church subsequent to this directive (if they obeyed) would have had:
a) Songs or psalms
b) A doctrine, sermon
c) Communion (Bread and Wine mentioned in chapter 11)
d) Speaking in Tongues (2 or 3)
e) Interpretation of Tongues (2 or 3)
f) Prophecy or revelation (2 or 3)
My question is: When if at all did this change and should it have?
I have for the past 18 years witnessed this structure applied exactly in this format every week with the following results:
1) People who visit our church hear speaking in togues in an orderly way (2 or at the most 3) and their response is that they identify the Tongues as a sign from God.
1Co 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not:
2) People both in the church and visitors alike hear interpretation of tongues and prophecy and secrets of their hearts are spoken in the prophecy or interpretation and they are convinced by this and acknowledge that God (who knows their thoughts) is in this place. They then respond and give their life to God.
1Co 14:24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
1Co 14:25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
Given that this result has occured consistantly over many decades in my church (of which I have been eyewitness to hundreds) I can not understand why others do not want to run their meeting the same way.
Has this been your experience? or am I off base?
God Bless

Luke, I attend the Assembly of God church.
I believe pretty much the way you do.

It didn't change at our church, I see it all the time.
Not that I see.
I'm not one you have to convince!
God Bless ya bro,
