You pointed out some verses in Psalms that show God hid His face from the writer. Weren't the psalms reflecting someone's thoughts though? It might have felt like He hid his face, but in actuality He didn't. | In the case of some of those verses, that is true. In the context, at least one turns out to say that God will not hide His face from the righteous. And one of the verses quoted is Psalm 22:24, the Psalm also containing the statement that launched this discussion.
No one here denies that God will never forsake the righteous. I think this discussion is partly a misunderstanding because some involved in it seem to think others are suggesting that that could happen. And as for the unrighteous (in their own works) but repentent and believing, well isn't the the definition of the righteous?
But the point that I'm not sure is coming across clearly (and I sit amazed that it woudl not) is that on the cross, Jesus was carrying our unrighteousness.

Jesus was human, so at that moment, while dying, it could have felt like the Father wasn't there for Him, but in actuality He was. | Jesus knew He was destined for the cross. He knew the purpose which God had for Him. He knew that He would become Lord and Christ forever, that He would rise again the 3rd day, and reign with God forever. Maybe in that moment, the reality of Who He was, His rising again, and His reigning forever felt far from Him. Maybe all He felt at that moment was death and hopelessness.
Whether feeling it or in actuallity experiencing it, I certainly think He was living the fulfillment of Psalm 22 in that instant, not just inviting everyone to read it with Him.
Ultimately, His Father was there for Him, but not to rescue Him from the cross. His Father came through by making Jesus the risen Lord after He'd endured the cross. _________________ Establishing the law by receiving the righteousness which is by faith, without the deeds of the law!

I don't know what you are talking about. They all agree with me. I am simply saying what the text says. |
Don, obviously you and I do not think alike, sorry.
To everyone else:
The bottom line of this thread is did God forsake Jesus on the cross?
Ps. 22:23-24 clearly says he did not. _________________ Anyone can point out a scripture here and there and prove anything they want to believe, but good theology is understanding the message of the gospel as a whole. Sincerely, JimD |
