It is particularly hypocritical when Republican officials get caught in sex scandals because they are all so sanctimonious and morally self-righteous. Quite often it's a homosexual sex scandal, which of course is way worse, since so many Republican politicians are vociferous homophobes.
I wanted to start a thread dedicated to this topic. I'll get things going by listing a few Republicans (and other right-wingers) who have been involved in such scandals:
-J. Edgar Hoover: Vehement anti-communist (and all things left-wing), and almost certainly a homosexual.
-Bob Allen: Republican member of the Florida House of Representatives whose career ended when he offered an undercover police officer $20 so that he could perform oral sex on said officer.
-Ted Haggard: Fundamentalist Christian leader and vociferous anti-homosexual who lost all of his power and became shunned by his mega-church after it became known that he had on several occasions had sex and done crystal meth with a male prostitute.
-Larry Craig: Republican Senator (previously a Congressman) who was caught and charged for soliciting anonymous homosexual sex in an airport bathroom.
-Paul Ingram: Republican party chairman of Thurston county, Washington. Accused by his children of sexual abuse and ritualistic satanic abuse. In fairness, this might not be a good example, because there seems to be a lot of controversy that his daughters' memories were implanted by their therapists. Still, his church urged him to confess (and being extremely suggestible, he did), so it sort of counts in a strange way.
Are there any more cases that anyone would like to add?
And for all of you Clinton-haters out there, let's please leave him out of this because
a) He was never morally self-righteous,
b) His affair with Monica Lewinsky wasn't homosexual, and
c) He was a Democrat; I'd like this thread to be about Right-wing hypocrisy. _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

Wasn't the Foley (R -Fla) scandal about congressional pages starting in 2005 sexually explicit emails to boy pages.
Mark Foley was a republican and a powerful member of congress. Check out these other sites

Strom Thurmond is another classic example from ages ago.
Bob Barr, Republican Congressman from Georgia. Sponsored the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act, saying "The flames of hedonism, the flames of narcissism, the flames of self-centered morality are licking at the very foundation of our society, the family unit." Was married three times. Paid for his second wife's abortion (she also suspected he was cheating on her). Failed to pay child support to the children of his first two wives and while married to his third and present wife was photographed licking whipped cream off of strippers at his inaugural party.
Merrill Robert Barter, Republican County Commissioner, pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual contact and assault on a teenage boy. Booth Bay Register Article
Robert Bauman, Republican congressman and anti-gay activist, was charged with having sex with a 16-year-old boy he picked up at a gay bar. Source: Washington Blade
Parker J. Bena, Republican activist and Bush Elector, pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography (including children as young as 3 years old) on his home computer and was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison and fined $18,000. Source
Louis Beres, chairman of the Christian Coalition of Oregon. 3 of his family members accuse him of molesting them when they were pre-teens. Editor and Publisher article. In August 06, Beres confessed. The Portland Mercury
Just a sample from the 'B' section of the first reference above. _________________ My boss is a Jewish carpenter.

What's the Republican slogan? Something along the lines of 'The Moral Party'... _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

Well the Moral Majority was an organization from some preacher in Virginia. The republicans mainly claimed it as their own afterward.
The original republican party was the party of Lincoln who went to war over a moral issue slavery. (no I dont want to debate this again) since then who knows. _________________ My boss is a Jewish carpenter.

glad to see you're having fun....
Odd that your list includes people that aren't elected and may not even be declared Republican (i.e, Ted Hagard)
Moreover, with the exception of Craig (who should be kicked out of office) I'm pretty sure every one of the Republican office holders were booted out by their party...
but whatever....at best, your argument is "Republican politicians are just as immoral and repugnant as Democratic ones, only Democrats are better 'cuz we admit we're morally ambiguous"....
the actual point of this thread? _________________ Link to intro post of "who I am"

That's why I wrote this:

This thread is about the combination of self-righteousness, claims to moral superiority, and massive levels of hypocrisy.
I actually think that we're developing a thesis here: I believe that in the history if the United States, there have been far more Republican sex scandals than Democratic ones. That's the impression I have, and I'd like to know if it's right.
I'm also willing to bet that there are way more convicted criminals among Republican elected officials. I'd also like to know if this conjecture is right. _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

and how are you going to do that if you're premise is to list "right winger" sex scandals...shouldn't you simply be cataloging Dem and Rep "scandals" and then see what the tally is? What's your methodology? Convicted or accused? Reported in open press or actually happened?
How do these compare? source
Rep. Barney Frank. (D-Massachusetts) hired a male prostitute who ran a prostitution service from Frank’s residence in the 1980s. Only two Democrats in the House of Representatives voted to censure him in 1990.
Former Sen. Brock Adams. The late Washington Democrat was forced to stop campaigning after numerous accusations of drugging, assault and rape, the first surfacing in 1988.
Former Rep. Fred Richmond. This New York Democrat was arrested in 1978 for soliciting sex from a 16-year-old. He remained in Congress and won re-election—before eventually resigning in 1982 after pleading guilty to tax evasion and drug possession.
Former Rep. Mel Reynolds. The Illinois Democrat was convicted of 12 counts of sexual assault with a 16-year-old. President Bill Clinton pardoned him before leaving office.
or the current Mayor of Detroit, under investigation for sex with a co-worker, perjury about that fact on the witness stand, and currently involved in a nasty "dead hooker" incident
The Former Gov and current openly Gay Dem from NJ...
The Former Gov of NY
Marion Barry in DC...convicted of crack possession and and prostitution...served his time...and then was re-elected....

FWIW, the wiki entry on political sex scandals list 28 Democrats and 25 Republicans....seems they're both scummy....
the point for me is how many out of each column maintained their position within the party? _________________ Link to intro post of "who I am"

Funny, I was just browsing the RNC official website, reviewing the party history and current platform, and I saw NOTHING referring to moral superiority. At best what you have shown is people doing things that people do, just happens that some of them are affiliated with a particular political party - and as Pondering correctly pointed out - neither party has a corner on people being more than human...

Looks to me like once again, a correlation has been pushed out in front as if it is anything more than tenuous contrivances. _________________ JP's Mind - my blog

Sure. Most of the above cases are totally tame compared with these:
http://www.geocities.com/arthursank/sexualmorality.html
And these are just some of the Republican pedophiles!
Seeing as how the Republicans have traditionally campaigned on "returning morality to Washington", being the "moral party", "recapturing moral values", etc., these are pretty interesting. _________________ "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."
