Walking for fitness: How to trim your waistline, improve your health
Walking is a low-impact exercise with numerous health benefits. Here's how to get started.
Walking is a gentle, low-impact exercise that can ease you into a higher level of fitness and health. It's one of your body's most natural forms of exercise. It's safe, simple, doesn't require practice, and the health benefits are many. Here's more about why walking is good for you, and how to get started with a walking program.
Benefits of walking
Walking for fitness can help you achieve a number of important health benefits. For example, you can:
Reduce your risk of a heart attack. Walking keeps your heart healthy by lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) and raising high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol). A regular walking program also reduces your risk of developing high blood pressure, a factor that also contributes to heart disease.
Manage your blood pressure. If you already have high blood pressure, walking may reduce it.
Reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Regular exercise reduces your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. If you're a woman, overweight and at a high risk of diabetes, walking can improve your body's ability to process sugar (glucose tolerance).
Manage your diabetes. If you already have type 2 diabetes, taking part in a regular walking program can improve your body's ability to process sugar, lower your blood sugar, reduce your risk of heart disease and help you live longer.
Manage your weight. Walking burns calories, which can help you manage your weight. For example, middle-aged women who walk more than 10,000 steps a day have lower levels of body fat than do women who are less active.
Manage stress and boost your spirits. Going for a brisk walk is a great way to reduce stress. Regular walking also can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety.
Stay strong and active. As you get older, walking for physical fitness can prevent falls, help you stay mobile and maintain your independence.
Gen 13:17 Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.
Hab 3:19 The LORD God [is] my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' [feet], and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.
Jhn 1:36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
Act 3:6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.

Great post lone. We spend so much time focusing on our diet we often forget the importance of exercise. I think that walking is one of the best, especially as we age.
One of the sad things is that so many cities in Canada and the US are not designed to encourage walking, unlike Europe. The lack of sidewalks in many places means that people are encouraged to get in the car and drive a few blocks just to go to the corner store. _________________ One would never discover the limits of soul, should one traverse every road -- so deep a measure does it possess.

Hi Plotinus,
I have a couple DVD's at home for walking right in your own living room. It's like marching in place at a pretty good pace. And has some side steps and knee lifts incorporated into the moves. The music is great, and it's fun.
All you have to do is put on some music with a beat and let your body start moving..
Even dancing like doin the twist while you clean the house or tappin your toes while you make dinner are good forms of exercising.
The thing is to try to keep moving as much as your comfortable with.
Don't forget to drink plenty of water to keep hydrated.
I've been getting out of the truck a lot more lately. I used to sit in the truck during our 8-10 hour breaks. Now I walk around the rest area or truckstops for at least 1/2 hour a day.
When I wake up..I stretch. Just standing on my tippy toes and reaching as high to the sky as possible. And trying to touch my toes lol..
It's getting easier everyday..
You should eat a little something before you go on a walk though, it gives your muscles more energy and gives you a power boost.
Don't forget breakfast..it's the most important meal of the day..It's what fuels your body and keeps you moving.
Even if you work in an office, you can find a few minutes here and there to just walk around or even march in place, Make like your going to sit in your chair but just stop short of actually sitting and stand up..do this about 8 times..you will feel it in your thighs, belly, and butt..LOL.
And it keeps your blood flowin and it's all good..
And one other thing...
don't forget to breathe...

Europe may be designed to encourage walking, but that doesn't mean all of its inhabitants take advantage of it. A friend of mine went to Europe for a six week backpacking tour, and she was quite limited in her spending, so in one country (I can't remember which), she was trying to walk around and the locals couldn't help her with walking directions. They would tell her "take this train and then this one" but they had no clue how to get places on foot. She was at a train station and she was told she had to take a train to the east station and then catch one there to get to her destination. She was told there was no way she could walk that. Well, it turns out, it's literally across the street. She took a picture of it from the first station. _________________ Truth doesn't care about theology, and theology doesn't care about truth. |

Excellent advice. I get my exercise the high impact way, myself, through long distance running. Hydration is important. In the course of a run I can lose up to a pound of fluid by sweating. _________________ One would never discover the limits of soul, should one traverse every road -- so deep a measure does it possess.

Hi Lone;
I used to walk so many places. Even as a young adult. I took the bus a lot but the bus would be late so I would walk to the next stop....then the next....then the next. The bus would drive up and I had to run to the next stop to catch it!
I walked a lot looking for work in Salt Lake City (UT).
I walked for fun and excercise with my oldest girl.
I walk/hike/bike/fish etc... a lot with my baby too but in the winter, it's much more difficult to walk.
My daughter and I recently bought pedometers. I have been wearing mine every day. If you have a sit-down job, it's more difficult to achieve 10,000 steps a day. I have, however, found that wearing the pedometer inspires me to look for opportunities (especially at work) to walk. For example, usually we just put credit card slips in a central location then another group picks them up and rings the payments. Lately, I don't do that. I walk every payment up to the front lobby myself. Some days, it's amazing how far I walk just making small changes like that.
I'd like to challenge you all to go to your local Wal-Mart or sporting good store and get a pedometer and get moving.
Have a wonderful night, all!

I know I got one of those somewhere..LOL..
I FEEL GREAT!
My stomach problems have just about disappeared, and I can move freer than before.
My knees though, I don't know what's up with them, got's to get them in line with the rest of me..LOL..
I stayed home this time. Hubby headed out yesterday. This one's for me. I have a lot of things to catch up on.
Teeth, Eyes, and the whole get in shape thing.
If I put the tv on in the morning...I'm DOOMED..LOL
So I've been putting some dance music in the CD player. So when I'm cleaning the house it gives me a boost to bounce..LOL..

That's the problem with going on the road, it's all sit down. I'm learning how to ride my bike again. Hoping there's a way to attach it to the truck so when we stop I can go for a ride.
Check this out:
I even baught an Ipod..LOL..
now, how do you work it..
Big Hugs

I walk my dog every evening after work. I get my ipod that is loaded with all my favorite Christian music and I get a good workout and a great worship session at the same time! (can you tell I"m a multi-tasker!) The one thing that is hard to control is to not sing and dance as I walk down the street!!! or if I have my eyes closed and my arms raised, the lamp post really hurts when I walk right into it! (there's that crazy lady again!) lol. The extra added benefit is that my dog gets some exercise too! I was totally confused when I bought my ipod, but once you plug it into your computer and go to itunes, you can purchase either single songs or entire cd's of your favorite artists. I also figured out how to take my cd's and transfer them onto my ipod. Music is a huge part of my life and there is such a wide variety of Christian music these days. Did anyone catch American Idol Gives back a few nights ago?? SHOUT TO THE LORD!! I was so happy that the millions of people that tuned into the program were ministered to through that beautiful song!! |
