hi all--------
I believe that scrapple was a better version of spackle.
spackle would be old dark bits of gristle congealed in mixture of animal fat and boiled marrow(for that slimey gritty texture true masochists enjoy) with the delicate taste and aroma of four day old road kill.
Dad used to buy this stuff wrapped in butchers paper and made comments like "we used to eat this stuff back in the depression"and then would go on about the good old days when suffering built character.If he was feeling really nostalgic he would serve it smeared on some stale and moldy bread.
Now as bad as it was,I remember a sense of pride in the fact that I could actually choke down one of these depression sandwiches without puking (dad could actually do it with a straight face,but I think his taste buds must have been shot off in the war or something)

Reminds me of how I used to go hunting with my dad and we would eat armadillo and possum and squirrel and rabbit, coons,etc. Down here in LA, they eat anything that moves or doesn't move. Years ago LA imported nutria rats to eat the vegetation in some bayous, etc. and now they've taken over. They're about the size of beavers. Cajuns will eat them and at one time LA thought about trying to market the meat. Never did catch on as most people don't like the thought of eating rats. Haven't tried one of those yet. Now, fried frog legs?...yummmmy! Fried soft shell crabs?.....extra yummmy!

That brings back the memories. I used to go hunting with my dad too. Great times. Sigh!
He would even give me a ten minute head start.

boiled peanuts--yummy, and they only get slimey if you cook them too long. beng a georgian i like fried green tomatoes, grits, poke sallet, and sweet tea(the kind that's mostly sugar) too.

Yes!!! And baked 'coon and collard greens with cornbread! Chicken and dumplings with red beans and cornbread! In fact, just about anything with cornbread or bisquits!!! Any of you yankees ever eat something called "liver mush?" I was up in Michigan (I think that's where it was) and they brought me some one morning for breakfast. They told me to put it on toast! YUCK!!!! I asked them if they had grits and they stared at me like I was from Mars! They had never heard of grits. How deprived they are up there!!! Grits and butter, grits and syrup, grits and gravy, grits and jam, grits and ANYTHING is cat larrypping!

My Dad was from Virginia.....one night he drove us from the house whilst cooking tripe.
I preferred the fried chicken he cooked with chicken gravy and mashed potatoes.
But.....it don't hold a candle to a great meatball parm hero.

no collard greens, please. but i do like biled okry, and sweet taters. pastor, you made me hungry--good thing i was eating when i read your post. anybody ever heard of ripe tomato slices with sugar on top? my granpa loved 'em.

Do you have Bovril or OXO in America? It is like Marmite, but instead of vegetables it is made out of Beef! You can even drink it.

We have that in Canada, so I'd say they probably have it in the States too. I prefer not to use it, myself.
