The leader of one of the world’s most popular religions has an extraordinary special offer apparently to encourage believers to take flights to Lourdes on the new Vatican airline.
If you visit the shrine in south-west France from this week you will receive "plenary indulgences" from the Pontiff, which the Pope asserts reduce the time spent being "washed" of sin after death.
He doesn’t specify what reduction he is offering so I hope he doesn’t fall foul of trading standards officials. There are laws regulating special offers—they must not be misleading and the benefits offered must be given as advertised…
If you want to take advantage of this special offer, you’d better be quick it only lasts until December 8 2008.
I suppose if you are so far gone as to believe in life after death despite the total absence of evidence that it is so and some evidence suggesting that it cannot be so, it is a small step to imagine that you can influence how long your soul needs to be “washed clean”.
Seriously, I can’t remember when I last saw a Church employ such a cynical ploy to raise funds. Those of you here who persist in believing things on faith that have the smallest likelihood of being true can perhaps see here how being so gullible allows you to be taken for a fool.
This would be funny if it were not sad…

Hi Argenta!
Nice hearing from you!
Thanx for the info:
It is sad,
but sadder is
the cause of such foolery and gullibility:
the stupid and foolish idea or axiom or premise that it is wise to hate self as a fool or as a gull or as any other word.
That most stupid and oldest false premise can also be described in terms of the oldest profession:
the prostitution and the selling/earning of Love at a price,
which then leads to what you correctly decry: the resultant selling of indulgences for a price, or the selling of sex for a price.
So I wd encourage you to do even more than this post to correct the cause:
Indulge yourself with Love for yourself as a fool and gull and as dirty and as a sinner, and as a creationist and as an evolutionist, as faithful and faithless, and etc
so you wd not be attitudinally actually justifying the sellers to hate themselves as poor and so have to get rich by selling whatever half-plenary or plenary means in order to earn Love for themselves at the price of rich or in order to sell themselves Love at the cost price of rich or to buy Love from themselves at the going price of rich,
and so
you wd NOT encourage the indulged pros[ective buyers from buying or selling or earning Love at a price.
Ok?smile
That Love applies both to the Science of Religion and to the Church of Science!
It actually takes more faith to believe that something comes from nothing than to believe that something came from something!
This verse of indulgence is supplied for free:smile
Isaiah 55
1Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money;
come ye, buy, and eat;
yea, come, buy [the] wine and milk [of Love] without money and without price.
In the ever-Plenary Indulgence of Unconditional Love which Love is sold and bought and earned for free or at the price of nothing,
and
which Love washes all clean of the dirt of Hatred for self as any word,
and which Love loves creationists & evolutionists equally 100% for free,
