A safe Non-precription pain reliever.
Lettuce tea has long been known as a soother of pain and a sleep inducer.
Its opiate-like action is due to a bitter white juice, which exudes from the plant when it is cut or broken.
All lettuces posses some of this narcotic juice, wild lettuce having the most, followed by prickly lettuce, then garden lettuce.
The simplest way to obtain lettuce's opiate action for those troubled with insomnia, is to eat some lettuce last thing at night, just before bed.
It helped soldiers in battle to sleep better.
An old-fashioned remedy for sleeplessness is lettuce tea.
Two or three of the outer leaves, which contain 30 percent more nutrients than the inner leaves, are washed thoroughly, then simmered for 20 minutes in one-half pint of water.
This is strained, and drunk hot just before bedtime.
During World War 2, when codeine was in short supply, doctors turned to the bitter juice in lettuce, called then, lettuce opium...for its sedative and cough suppresent properties similar to codeine and morphine, only milder.
Extracts of lettuce juice were given to soldiers who had respiratory problems, or were in need of sleep and pain relieve., and it worked quite well. |

| The lactucin is primarily in the stem, not the leaves. Which is why eating a salad doesn't give most people a euphoric effect. |

Sooo...
If you want to get a lettuce buzz, best thing to do is make a lettuce cocktail with the stem and outer leaves, huh?
