Ultimate Experience
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

Psalm 34:8

That God is "good" is one of the most valuable truths ever entrusted to the human race. How could we survive if we did not know that He is perfectly wise and just -- and that He is benevolently inclined toward us? Like the other aspects of His nature, God's goodness far surpasses our ability to comprehend. His benevolence is an ocean deeper than we can fathom. But the Scriptures hold up this truth for us to contemplate and to be comforted by. And the wonder of it all is that our Creator's goodness is consummated in this great desire: He desires to give Himself to us. "God is so good that he only awaits our desire to overwhelm us with the gift of himself" (François Fénelon).

David invites us to experience God's goodness firsthand. "Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good." We can debate the theoretical pros and cons of divine goodness for months and not learn as much about it as there is to be learned in one day of actual walking with God. Ultimately, "the proof is in the pudding," as the old cooks used to say. And as John Keats observed, "Nothing ever becomes real until it is experienced -- even a proverb is no proverb to you till your life has illustrated it." If we wish to make great spiritual strides, one of the most valuable things we can do is to "taste" that which we've only thought about up to now.

There is, of course, a degree of risk involved in the "tasting" approach, and that may be why we limit ourselves to theoretical discussions of God's goodness. It is safer, in a sense, simply to talk about the question than to put ourselves at risk and find out for sure. So David's statement, "Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good," is followed immediately by the benediction, "Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!" Trust is truly what it takes to find out whether God's goodness can be counted on. If we hide behind our suspicions and keep God at a "safe" distance, then we can't expect to know for ourselves what it is like to walk with Him. God's goodness is best tested by being tasted.

Pastor,

Amen to all of your post! I loved it. I find it ironic that people will trust other people, even after they've been hurt by somebody. Yet, the one being who only looks after their best interest is the last one who's trusted. So many people are afraid to reach that arm out & grab ahold of God's goodness.

Hi P2022,

Very good!

But the best way of tasting God that God is good is thinking in Good Tasty Love for all good words and their opposite bad words---the Taste of Thought by the Tongue of Love!smile

That is why 2 Cor 10:5. Prov 23:7. 1 Cor 2:9-11.

After all is said and done,
more is always said than done.

After all is thought and said,
more is always thought than said!

There are endless more nouns than verbs!smile
In that sentence, as in this, there is only one verb!
Plus, no number is a verb, though we can 'deep-six' that, and etc!smile

Then with the attitudinal and theoretical foundation pre-set at Love-taste for all words,
we get the best and the most re-taste that God is good
from
all practical good and bad experiences in spoken words or in written words or in actions or in reactions---all of which are just words!

After all, that is why we already say:
Get mind in gear before motoring my mind or my mouth or my actions!smile

We experience everything in words:
so unless all words are pre-set at and to Love,
all experiences, especially the evil or bad ones, can not be best experienced in tasting God as good.
Romans 8:28. Gen 50:20

With the Taste of Love for all pairs of words,
by which Love all words are pre-pared & pre-set for best re-tasting God as Good in all other experiences those those very words, pre-seasoned by the Love which is for all seasons, smile
