An English translation of the Quran began appearing two weeks ago on the doorsteps of hundred of homes in the BraesTimbers neighborhood. The books came in plastic bags with a note attached from the ‘Book of Signs Foundation’ asking recipients to accept the Quran as a gift from the Muslim community.

But some residents, like Greg and Sue Ann Pieri, said they feared the group is imposing its beliefs on non-Muslims and found the gesture offensive.

“If we went into a Muslim country and left a bible, we would be in prison and then decapitated a few years later,” said Sue Ann Pieri, who chose not to destroy the book like other neighbors did.

However, Houston's Council on American-Islamic Relations President Tarick Hussein said although his organization did not partake in distributing the books, he believes that the Muslims behind the distribution only wanted to educate non-Muslims about the religion.

The Book of Signs Foundation claims to have distributed 30,000 Qurans in Houston, targeting neighborhoods believed to be most receptive of the Quran or in need of a better understanding of Islam.

I don't see how getting a religious text on your doorstep is in any way an imposition.

Of course not. To me, it's the same thing as Christians leaving tracts on people's doors or handing them out to people walking by.

I wouldn't convert to Islam but I wouldn't mind a free Quran.

A Muslim friend gave me a paperback copy of the Koran a couple of years ago. (Also a copy of the Haddith.) I also obtained a free copy (a very nice - but oversized - hardback book) from The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). I don't know if CAIR is still giving away free copies but you might try contacting them. You might also try asking a Muslim friend or aquaintance, or contact a mosque.

Neither my friend nor CAIR has attempted to convert me to Islam. I did however receive a survey from CAIR asking my opinion on a number of issues. I filled out the survey but never heard anything else from them.

Interesting about a copy of the Haddith. That's their written oral law - something like the Jewish Talmud.

One thing that bothers me about the Muslims, particularly those in Western countries such as the United States, is when Islamic extremists do their thing there is little to no denouncement of their actions among the Western living Muslims. But if there is anything remotely resembling Mohamed humor or criticism then you see Muslims declaring a jihad and wanting to behead westerners!

Of course, I'm over-reacting. But did you get my point? Especially that Muslims don't see their over-reactions as over-reacting?

If they do respond to the survey, I'd be curious at how they responded as well as what they said. Maybe Muslims act differently on paper than they do in real life.

Uh. What makes you think this? Here, someone else said this better than I:

"The moderate Muslim masses are failing to reach our arbitrary standard of what is sufficent condemnation of terrorism. Therefore, the Muslim masses by their silence condone or even support terrorism. We know terrorism is wrong, but the Muslims clearly do not. This is because they are not as civilized as us. It is our duty to help them become civilised. We do this by dropping many bombs on them from a great height until they learn what civilization truly means."

They were primarily interested in my view about how they could improve their image with the non-Muslim American population. I told them that they needed to be outspoken against the radical element (i.e., those who advocate terrorism) within Islam.

I won't go along with that.

Yet how much United States wealth is spent on Muslim countries when they don't particularly like us nor themselves? In fact, if the West in general stopped all economic aid the Muslim countries - that's not counting the billions of dollars spent on OPEC petroleum which is collected and used by the small Muslim aristocracy in questionable ways - I think they will try to respect us more and behave a lot better. At least the funding for Islamic terrorists will virtually dry-up!

I think starving them of money is worth more and be more effective than all the bombs your source wishes to drop on them.
