Alright well, lets get started!

I have a bible that gives verses for certain things. I think we will use that and I will type out the verses for each and we can discuss it!

Being A Friend

Proverbs 17.17; Luke 10.25-37; John 15.11-17 Romans 16.1,2

So, reading about the good samaritan, how can we do that today?

Proverbs 17:17
If God gives you a friend, and thus annoints the friendship, they will be your friend forever.
"Brother" could have two meanings. The first is a blood link, meaning that family is always there (although I'm sure thats not everyone's experience). The second meaning is that of a "brotherhood", meaning a group of people bonded together with their hearts, though not by actual blood. We see a lot of this sort of brotherhood in the military--people who watch out for each other and care for each other. God gives us these bonds to help ease our mortal way.

Luke 10: 25-37
I think it's interesting that when Jesus came along, he redifined the borders and expectations of human bonding. The first part talks about the Greatest Commandment, which of course is love God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself.
God must come first in all things and everything we do must stem from the love and devotion that we have for him. If not, we're really just wasting our time ( I actually had some experience with this recently). But, part of loving God, is understanding that he loved us first, from the time before he formed us, He loved us. And, not only that but we have to realize that God made us exactly as He wants us to be, natural flaws and all, and part of loving God is realizing this and accepting ourselves and then taking that healthy balanced self love and passing it on to others. We love ourselves because God loves us and we love others because ... ha! Guess what...God loves them too and if God loves them, how can we do less? Accept yourself and others as God's precious creations and love as such. "Strut like ya mean it!" That I THINK is the meaning of the Greatest Commandment. Smile

Thes sceond part goes into the story of the Good Samaritan. I think this may have been Jesus' way of explaining that everyone who comes into our lives--no matter how they get there--is someone that we are responsible for--not in the sense of controlling their lives or anything but rather in the sense of living out the Greatest Commandment. It's a "God loves me so I can do no less for you." kind of mentality and certainly the attitude with which we are expected to live.
To be a Good Samaritan today--simply reach out to people in need, no matter how inconvenient it may be. Especially reach out to those who are outside of your "comfort zone". It's just too easy to help someone that you like, God expects more I think. For example, the homeless guy (we've all encountered one) who no one looks at and some people cross the street to get away from. Buy him a cup of coffee and sandwich (corporal work of mercy alert!). An even simplier example would be the co-worker that you don't really get along with gets a bad review from your boss and is really upset. Reach out to them, offer comfort, cheer them up, offer help if they need it. I believe that to know what God expects, all you need do is ask yourself a simple four word question: "What would Jesus do?" Then do it. Let's face it: Jesus was the ULTIMATE "Good Samaritan" (among other things of course)...People really haven't changed all that much. To be a Good Samaritan today, just keep following His example.

John 15: 11-17
This is simply another way of saying--love one another as God loves you. It's pretty straight forward, the language couldn't be plainer: "I command you: love one another." Jesus loved indiscriminately, he expects nothing less from us.

Romans 16:
Not too sure about this one. I actually think I may have a different version. The verse I have talks about a woman name Phoebe. I can't figure how it ties in.
