I'm hoping that some of you guys can help put the following into laymans terms for me so I can understand it better.
In the bible there is a criteria for which animals are determined clean or unclean. I know there is something deeper here, but without understanding the Cud, then I'm kind of stuck.
So here is the definition but I don't understand it.
Can you help?
Thanks
Cud
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CUD is an acronym sometimes used to describe the genetic disorder Primary carnitine deficiency.
Cud is a bolus of semi-degraded food regurgitated from the reticulorumen of a ruminant. Cud is produced during the process of rumination, or "chewing the cud".
The alimentary canal of ruminants, such as the cow, goat, sheep and antelope, is unable to produce the enzymes required to break down the cellulose and hemicellulose of plant matter. Accordingly, these animals have developed a symbiotic relationship with a wide range of microbes, which largely reside in the reticulorumen, and which are able to synthesise the requisite enzymes. The reticulorumen thus hosts a microbial fermentation which yields products (mainly volatile fatty acids and microbial protein), which the ruminant is able to digest and absorb.
The process of rumination is stimulated by the presence of roughage in the upper part of the reticulorumen. The chest cavity is stretched, forming a vacuum in the gullet that sucks the semi-liquid stomach content into the oesophagus. From the oesophagus it is taken back to the mouth with retro peristaltic movements. When the stomach content, or the cud, arrives in the mouth of the ruminant, it is pushed against the palate with the tongue to remove eccess liquid, the latter is swallowed and the solid material is chewed thoroughly. The function of rumination is that food is physically refined to expose more surface area for bacterial working in the reticulorumen, as well as stimulation of saliva secretion to buffer the rumen pH.
The reticulorumen has an optimum pH of 6.5 for the microbe population to live and function. Consumption by ruminants of an insufficiently fibrous diet leads to little cud formation and therefore lowered amounts of saliva production. This in turn is associated with rumen acidosis, where the rumen pH can fall to as low as pH 5 or lower. Rumen acidosis is associated with a lowered appetite which leads to still lower rates of saliva secretion. Eventually, a collapse of the microbial ecosystem in the rumen will occur because of the low pH. Acute rumen acidosis can lead to death of the animal, and will occur if the animal is allowed to eat a diet with no roughage but high levels of highly digestible starchy concentrate. It is thought that most dairy cows in intensive systems of milk production have sub-acute acidosis because of the high rates of cereals in their diets relative to an insufficient amount of forage.
When food has been degraded efficiently it passes from the reticulorumen through the reticulo-omasal oriface to the omasum followed by the abomasum to continue the digestion process in the lower parts of the alimentary canal. No enzymes are secreted in the rumen. Enzymes and hydrochloric acid are only secreted from the Abomasum (fourth stomach) onwards, and ruminants function from that point onwards much like monogastric animals, such as pigs and humans.
there's lots of big words here that I just can't digest..without looking up every single word...need simplification...LOL
thanks again

| Basically, they don't have enough chemicals to digest their food in one go. It has to be spit up and chewed again. |

so as to say then,
They eat their own vomit??!!
I don't think I like that picture...
I haven't eaten any meat for 4 days and I haven't had one problem with my stomach.
But I know when I eat meat I vomit for a minimum of 6-8 hours straight.
This includes gravy only also.
Can ones system change so dramatically overnight like that?
Like when your a kid you can't stand hmm..well I didn't like rice. But now that I'm older my tastes change and I like rice.
Can the inside digestive system change like that too?
And as I was reading that description about the Cud, at the bottom it talks about how cows that are continually milked are not getting the same nutrients that their bodies require..
Could this be a cause of Mad Cow disease?
The body is missing something that effects their brains??
I'm just throwing stuff out here because I really don't know.
But that regurgitating stuff, there's a lot about dogs returning to their vomit, and being vomitted out of the mouth.
And the cud kind of brings this in somewhat of a light to me.
Thanks FFT.

I don't think I like that picture... | Ants (I think) digest food by spitting digestive juices onto it before it even gets to their mouths. There are all sorts of weird eating habits in the animal kingdom, but they're only weird because they're different from what we do.
| lone-traveler wrote: | | Could this be a cause of Mad Cow disease? | Nope. Mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalopathy or BSE) is caused by a mutant protein.
Wikipedia on BSE. |

I found this though...
The use of meat and bone meal as a protein supplement in cattle feed was widespread in Europe prior to about 1987. Worldwide, Soybean meal is the primary plant-based protein supplement fed to cattle. However, soybeans do not grow well in Europe, so cattle raisers throughout Europe turned to the less expensive animal byproduct feeds as an alternative. A change to the rendering process in the early 1980s may have resulted in a large increase of the infectious agents in the cattle feed.
so would seem a change in the diet no?

well cows and sheep and certain animals, naturally don't eat meat right?
Like cows eat graa and straw and hay normally. But we went and added a meat protein suplement to their diet. And I'm thinking that this supplement is causing whatever is in the protein which causes this MCD to occur.
And if cows were not meant to eat meat, and yet they are given it in their meal, and then we eat what they eat, and it's having a bad reaction on them, or contrary to their digestive systems, then this reaction could be happening in us, but not seen maybe...alzheimers, Brain problems and maybe cancers of different sorts.
I truly believe that we are what we eat, and if something is out of the ordinary with what we're eating, then things will become out of the ordinary in us.
just consider what I'm trying to mean here...
I don't know if it's a fact or fiction, I only know that the food we eat today is not the same food that our grandparents ate. And they lived a lot longer and half the diseases we have today are new.
So is it what we are eating that's causing the problems?
Peace

Regarding mammals, you can generally tell by how the teeth look, if they're meat eaters, grass eaters or mixed foods eaters.
Humans, among others, have searing, cutting and grinding teeth, making us a mixed food eater.
cows has cutting and grinding teeth, making them herbal eaters, lions have searing teeth, wich make them meat eaters.

| The protein only mutated once, in one cow. It spread from there. (To my knowledge) BSE doesn't arise, it only occurs as an infection from already-contaminated cattle. |

ok...
Fake what's your opinion of what I wrote above? Is there any common sense to it?
why do we feed herbal eaters meat protein if their not meat eaters?
Do you think this has any affect on theirs and our well being?

| lone-traveler wrote: | | why do we feed herbal eaters meat protein if their not meat eaters? | Greed. It is thought to increase the growth of bovines.
| lone-traveler wrote: | | Do you think this has any affect on theirs and our well being? | I do think it could affect a cow, to eat what it's not designed to eat.
We're not designed to ingest the poison a rattlesnake has, but the rattlesnake takes no harm from ingesting the poison when it eats the killed prey.
Humans are designed to eat a very varied set of foods, why, if becoming a vegan, you will have to monitor what you eat, to stay healthy.

I'm not abstaining from meat because I want to Fake.
It's becoming absolutely apparent to me that when I eat it I get sick...real sick.
And I don't know the underlying cause I only know the facts on the surface.
Man I love prime rib, hamburg in any recipe, love those sausages, chicken..eh...turkey..Oh yeah.
But I can't touch any of it. Not even the gravy.
I can eat anything else, and not have any problems. psychosematic?? I never thought about it.
This has been going on for quite some time now, and have only just recently discovered that it was anything that had to do with any meat.
Even tuna fish.
talk about a pain in the behind. Limited...oh yeah.
So now I have to figure out how to supplement the things that are in them with other things.
I'm a simple kind of person, like take out, chinese, italian, you name it.
The easier to prepare the better.
I'm down to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, vegetable soups, vegetables, fruit. And I'm not much for fruit but it fills the belly.
So it's not a choice I'm making because I don't want to eat meat. The choice is being made for me, and I'm just trying to figure out what's going on with my body.
I don't have health insurance a primary care physician or any of that. I go to the doctors it's coming out of my pocket. Average doctor visit a hundred bucks if not more. So they tell me take pills, and I still can't eat meat.
So why go to the doctors and spend money on pills that don't work. Better to go buy more vegetables.
just do me one favor, keep an eye on the food, make sure it's prepared ok, don't get what I have because ...man..it's not fun at all.
4 nights ago I put a little and I mean a little turkey gravy on some potatoes. from 6pm to 3pm the next day I could not leave the bathroom. Flushed, sweaty, abdominal pain, all in the upper abdomin. At first it begins with a little pressure like gas or being over full, then it spreads out to my ribs around my back, back to my stomach, making this circuit again and again and causing me to get sick continually.
It knocks me on my butt. then I sleep for about 8 hours and when I wake up I am so sore, like I just took a beating and somebody was wracking my ribs with brass knuckles.
This eventually goes away by the next day and stays away, until I goof and eat something with any meat in it whatsoever. Then it starts all over again.
you know, I'm glad I like vegetables LOL...
well now that I've poured out my guts to you literally LOL..
I'm just trying to figure out why some foods are ok, and what's this cud thing, and why are certain things affecting me...
And you guys know a lot more about this technical, chemical, bio whatever stuff, way more than me.
Thanks for all your responses and reading my woes LOL
Have a good night
