Parables

I have often wondered why Jesus used so many parables. I like the idea of the stories but so frequently He uses the parable in public then explains the story in private. Why couldn't He use the story AND explain it both in public?

The verses below is what Jesus said about why he spoke in parables. Very Happy

Mat 13:10 And the disciples said to Him, Why do You speak to them in parables?
Mat 13:11 He answered and said to them, Because it is given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of Heaven, but it is not given to them.
Mat 13:12 For whoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance. But whoever does not have, from him shall be taken away even that which he has.
Mat 13:13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not; nor do they understand.
Mat 13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah which said, "By hearing you shall hear and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see and shall not perceive;

Yes thank you. I have seen those and I realize its the way God wants it. I'm
curious however what purpose do you suppose it is that some should hear
but not understand?

As a teacher I seek for everyone to understand and I somehow get the idea
that God doesn't want everyone to understand. Surely I am wrong.

The word "parable" has been taken over into the English from the Greek word parabole. Para means "near" or "beside" and bole is from ballo, "I cast" or "throw". Literally it signifies something "cast beside" another, and as applied to discourse it means a method of teaching which demands the use of simi1itude or comparison.

All the parables of Scripture are weighty and wise sayings. This may be gathered from the words of the proverb, "The legs of a lame man are not equal, so is a parable in the mouth of fools" (Prov. 26. 7). The Companion Bible gives the meaning, "The clothes of a lame man being lifted up expose his lameness, so a fool exposes his folly in expounding a parable" (See also Prov. 26. 9).

Compare, for example, the usage of the word 'pearls' to find possible parallels from the O.T., which those Jews, esp. the disciples would have understood, and said they did, Mat. 13.51.

Interestingly, the Lord Christ Jesus quotes from Isa. 6.10 for the first time. The 3rd and final time Isa. 6.10 is quoted can be found at the end of Acts, Acts 28.25-28. Israel enters that which was only a forshadowing in Mat. 13.
