SilverSurfer keeps Sabbath holy because he loves God and wants to serve Him according to the letter of the law. Eleven keeps Sunday holy because he loves God and wants to serve Him according to the spirit of the law. They are both convinced in their own minds. Both serve God out of love.
And in accordance to the second part of the greatest commandment...
SilverSurfer warns people about the letter of the law because he loves his neighbor as himself and doesn't want his fellow believers to be lost on judgment day due to some legal technicality. Eleven warns people about the spirit of the law because he loves his neighbor as himself and doesn't want his fellow believers living in bondage and losing the liberty they have in Christ.
It would seem, then, they are both fulfilling the greatest commandment to the best of their abilities... albeit each one in their own unique way.
My wife and I are very careful how we judge others; because we don't know what's in another person's heart. But either way, this one thing is absolutely true: To use the Gospel as an offensive weapon is completely against the Word of God. That, then, should be the litmus test for our testimony.
Do we offend others with our rhetorical enthusiasm for Christ? If so, then how can we stop offending others? And, most importantly, when do we stop offending them? |
AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You don't realize it, but I am standing in my living room applauding you. We are of ONE body.
When are we going to learn that as long as we live by the commandments - and Jesus summarized them beautifully- we are all golden.
Nothing more to be said - SHUT UP ALREADY!!!

We agree, Eleven. It is only when we view others as outside ourselves that we forget who we really are in Christ. As you pointed out, we are ONE body, and that body belongs to Christ (it doesn't belong to us, and it doesn't belong to any particular denomination). We are all a part of Christ's body.
THE SIN OF SELECTIONISM
For this very reason, my wife and I detest the doctrine of election, because it carnally selects who can and cannot be in the body of Christ. It arrogantly claims that only they are Christ's body, and anyone who believes differently than they are not Christ's body. That is a sick and arrogant attitude, as far as we are concerned. But Calvinists are not the only ones who have this attitude. Anyone who believes they are "in the right" while everyone else is "in the wrong" is a selectionist (that is, they have the divine right to select who is and isn't going to be saved).
THE PURPOSE OF OUR CALLING
Christ did not call us for the purpose of dividing us (and anyone who relies on Luke 12:51-53 to justify their divisive tactics and attitudes is a victim of their own arrogance); Christ called us together, to unite us into ONE body (which is His body, not ours), in order that we might nourish and strengthen and support one another.
THOSE WHO ARE SPIRITUAL
We agree that Surfer's typical mode of operation is to attack, criticize, and accuse the body of Christ. But, understand this: Surfer is still a member of Christ's body, even at the same time he's abusing it. Therefore, Christ has called us (that is, you and I) to nourish, strengthen, and support him.
Surfer is like Christ's finger that keeps poking Christ's eye and scratching Christ's flesh and digging at Christ's privates. His behavior is both painful and contrary to the purpose of his place in the body. So we agree that Surfer is out of control, doing what a finger should NOT be doing, and we agree that he does need correction. However...
LET US NOT GROW FAINT OR WEARY
Let us not forget that Surfer is still a disciple of Christ, and he is still a member of Christ's body (even if, in his misguided arrogance, he doesn't think we are). And let us not grow weary as we lovingly deal with an errant brother.
So our suggestion is that we not shut up. Instead, let's choose to use our words the way God intended us to use them: that is, to build and encourage, to give hope and peace, and to bless and support. That is why God gave us a mouth, so we could use our words in the same creative, empowering manner that He uses His words. Therefore, let us use our mouths in such a way that Christ's body will benefit from what we say.
Then Christ will applaud us, and we will no longer have to applaud ourselves. |

The modern churches of today, are works oriented.
They want to get into heaven by what they think is right...never mind what God says.
"God Says, But I Think".
The Bible carries no authority for them as the ONLY instruction book for HOW Salvation is obtained.
Which is why Jesus said: would he find faith in the earth when HE returned.
The current trend is this:
Isaiah 4:1 And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.
People want to be called Christians, but also want to keep Jesus at arms lenght away from their desires and and wants.
YET, those who obey what the Bible says are opposed and derided as foolish people.
"Those who endeavor to obey all the commandments of God will be opposed and derided.
They can stand only in God.
In order to endure the trial before them, they must understand the will of God as revealed in His word; they can honor Him only as they have a right conception of His character, government, and purposes, and act in accordance with them.
None but those who have fortified the mind with the truths of the Bible will stand through the last great conflict.
To every soul will come the searching test: Shall I obey God rather than men?
The decisive hour is even now at hand.
Are our feet planted on the rock of God's immutable word?
Are we prepared to stand firm in defense of the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus? {GC 593.2}
(From the book: The Great Controversy Between Christ and satan, By E. White)
As Satan gains more control, he will urge people to fight against those who follow Jesus Christ all the way......
Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
As the Bible says:
Only those who truely know Jesus Christ will keep the commandments of God......
1 John 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. _________________ Matthew 5:11 Blessed are ye, when [men] shall revile you, and persecute [you], and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. |

Matthew 22
36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? |
Let's stop right there just for clarity's sake.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
Great : Predominant, remarkable in magnitude, distinguished, main
Get the idea? Ok, let's continue.
| Quote: |
37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38This is the first and great commandment.
39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. |
On these two what?
COMMANDMENTS!!!
(Let's say it again)
On these two WHAT?
COMMANDMENTS.
What about these two commandments, Lord?
THEY ARE THE GREATEST!
MEANING, NOTHING CAN TOP THEM!
Merriam-Webster again:
ALL= EVERY, ONLY, WHOLE
ON THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS HANG ALL (NOT SOME, NOT IN ADDITION TO, NOT BESIDES, BUT ALL) THE LAW,
AND THE PROPHETS.
Can it get any clearer than that???????????
Those are the WORDS spoken by Jesus Christ HIMSELF!!!
(Lord, I am exhausted!!! )
But I will bet a whole year's salary, I'm STILL gonna get an argument.

Back to the topic....
I think a lot of churches rely too much on glitz and glamour and not enough on the word of God.
For example, in the church I used to attend we did not really read the bible as much as I hoped we would. Instead, we spent a lot of time making announcements from the pulpit, asking for tithe and funding for many other things and we had a lot of special speakers, gospel singing groups, people who talked in tongues etc.....
I also think many churches bend a little too far regarding clothing. I think maybe I'm just a little old-fashioned but I think there should be at least a minimal dress code. I think blouses that show a womans belly, old slogan t-shirts, tight jeans, overalls and tank tops probably should not be worn in church.
I also think when churches start bending over too far and accepting behaviors the bible speaks against, they turn people who are trying to follow the bible off. (Just as a side-note, the church I attended did not bend on biblical doctrine but I know other churches in this area that do. I don't think it's our place to shun people because Jesus tells us to love one another but we can still stand up against behaviors that are not supported by the bible.
The church I have been attending for several months now is a little different. No frills, nothing fancy, small congregation trying to serve God the best we know how. We read and discuss on average about 3 chapters of the bible every Sunday. I like the good ol' fashioned way they teach about God straight from the bible.

Several years ago, I was part of the "Worship Team" at my church. We would meet once a week and discuss new ideas on how attract more people into church.
Powerpoint, music, displays,......whatever.
We thought we were really on the mark.
Several weeks later, a man approached the pastor, and said, "Ya know Pastor, my wife and I really enjoy coming here. You guys have the best show in town!
I quit the team, and that church, and now I work on my theology classes. _________________ Pain is inevitable;

luv: | Quote: | | I would sign the clipboards and then, the next meeting, the Pastor would get up and say they still needed help. I signed my name, address and phone number. The things that they were asking for were usually simple: help in the daycare or help in the kitchen or something like that. Never once did I get called. That told me right there that unless I were a 'member' of the church, I had nothing to offer. |
Of course I do not know the specific details of the situation, but maybe this will apply.
If the church is a larger one and the pastor does not know you personally, or those who are in charge of the programs needing help do not know you personally, they are at peace hiring a church member because they know that a church member will only teach the things that are in agreement with the church. They have a responsibility to make sure that there is not (what they believe to be) false teaching going out from their church. For example, if a Mormon, for instance, having some outlandish ideas contrary to scripture, wanted to volunteer to teach Sunday school at a fundemental church, it would be a horror.
Do not take it personally, often bigger churches have these type of issues. Can you blame them?
Or perhaps you might be sporting a nose ring and purple hair?
ps sorry this post comes so late in the discussion. _________________ Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

Eleven: | Quote: | Ya know what's really interesting about this?
Jesus says, the church is his bride, and He is the bridegroom.
Therefore, Jesus is present in EVERY church, because no bridegroom wants to be without His bride.
HE IS THERE.
Now tell me, who in the world can walk into any church - I don't care how dusty or stupid it is, and not look past all that to see the bridegroom standing there, waiting for His bride? |
The bride is the collective body of true believers, not a building, not a bunch of false religions. _________________ Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

It appears that you do not understand what is meant by "hang all" it does not mean to make null and void, it means are the basis or foundation for all the other commandments. _________________ Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

I agree with you. But what it DOES do is erase nonsensical dogmas such as Saturday is the Sabbath, or on the Christian side, you must worship on Sunday.
Neither one of those is true.
These are the first 4 commandments:
| God wrote: |
I am the LORD thy God, Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. |
The first 4 commandments are about God Himself, and nothing else.
So now Jesus summarizes these first 4 commandments by telling us what the greatest commandment is:
| Jesus wrote: |
'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' |
The next 6 commandments are about each other.
| God wrote: |
Honour thy father and thy mother
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
|
And Jesus summarizes these six by saying:
| Jesus wrote: |
And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' |
What Jesus is doing is giving us the commandments but getting rid of the nonsense that religion tagged on there which God never said.
Think about it. If you are able to Love God with all your heart all your soul and all you mind, then you are in obedience to the first 4 commandments.
And if you are loving your neighbor as yourself, then there is no way you can be breaking the last six.
So again, you are following the commandments.
So when you lie to a toddler telling them, sorry the TV is broken today, you are not going to fry in hell because you "lied". You love the kid and don't want him to be sitting in front of the dumb box all day.
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." _________________ Pain is inevitable;
