It sounds pretty ridiculous, but is it really any more absurd than stating that the Earth is 6000 years old or that evolution is false?

Atheists believe even stranger things:

At one point in the past there was no material universe. Matter has not always existed. Matter had to have made an appearance out of a complete void. In short, the material universe had a beginning.

Atheists argue that the universe is the result of self-generation. They state that matter came about out of a vacuum as a result of something called a Singularity. All the matter in the universe was contained in something the size of a pea. Atheists do not feel obligated to explain where this “pea” came from. Somehow, this pea, arbitrarily, at some point, decided to explode into an organized universe by what is called the “Big Bang”. So, now we have the entire functioning universe in place in a micro-second.

Over billions of years, the random action of atoms - however that works - was able to produce living tissue. Later, by continued random action, this living tissue became a mobile living creature, and still later, this random process produced a thinking, creative human being. This human has the capacity to create, but could not have been the result of a creator.

So now we have a sophisticated universe, and a world populated with highly creative humans as the result of mindless, random happenstance.

This is what atheists insist on as logic.

Exaggeration will not help, the first few seconds of the universe were a settling in, it took far more than a micro-second (according to the big bangers anyway) for things to settle down into what we might call matter.

It all seems preposterous doesn't it and note, it hasn't done anything like it since then, 14 billions of years later and it hasn't been duplicated since, so much for experimental reliability. Normally we accept experimental results based upon repeatability. This must be the only experiment which will never be tried again.

I think that it is much more likely that the universe is simply eternal in nature and had no beginning.

Why do atheists have to explain where the "pea" came from? Christians don't have to explain where God came from.
Much like God, we don't know where it came from. There's really no way of knowing. We can theorize but that's really about it. Same with God.

I think the idea of 'universe' as you have used it actually is a referral to 'existence as we know it' and/or 'matter and energy'.

The difference is in transcendence, if I understand the arguments correctly. Physics tells us that all matter/energy that exists must have a beginning (if my understanding of the arguments is correct), but since 'God' is a transcendent being, He is beyond existence as we understand it.

So, I think the argument on the side of 'universe always was' is inconsistent with knowledge and philosophy.

Chaos theory and catastrophe together show that higher levels of complexity can result from and suddenly appear out of seemingly low energy levels. The "law" of entropy may only work within limits, like Newton's laws don't control everything either.
