I disagree. I believe Jesus would be in favor of hermeneutical studies.
2 Tim 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. |

SS,
Before the law came, humanity was judged on the condition of the heart. Abraham's willingness to sacrafice his son.
When the law came, humanity was still judged on the condition of the heart. God was angry because when the children of Israel made sacrifices there heart was far from God.
When Christ came, He promised to remove the heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 11:19
"And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,
In other words He came to change the Human Heart which results in a turning away from sin. Your ideas are right but I think that you have them in the wrong order.
Salvation is through Christ only.
Sanctification comes from an obedient walk.
