Funny, I was thinking about this.

To anyone, why do you think Ananias and his wife Sapphira instantly dropped dead when there is no mention of the ones who stoned Stephen dropping dead?
Is it because Stephen asked that their sin not be layed to their charge and Peter didn't ask for this or is one of these acts more serious than the other?

acts 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.

7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.

9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

JESUS did tell peter that who's sin he forgave would be forgiven, though that deserves a proper study on it's own...

in this story though, it would seem that peter is saying he is not the one offended but GOD is....

perhaps one of the differences in them and the men who stoned stephen...perhaps is the forgiveness of stephen since it was an act against stephen whereas annanias(?) and his old lady, tried to deceive GOD and not just men....

or maybe it is that not only did stephen forgive them and pray for their forgiveness, but they(his killers) also did not know the TRUTH or claim HIS name...where as the couple did...perhaps that is another difference...

I'm leaning more toward this explanation. Somehow, theirs was a more serious offence than stoning stephen.

Perhaps ignorance was/is a viable excuse. There seems to be some scripture to support that. How long ignorance was/is to remain an excuse, I don't know.

i agree...while the bible does say GOD once winked at ignorance but now requires repentence..

i also remember reading paul talking about what he did before GOD called him.... how he persecuted the church but said he was forgiven because he did it in ignorance and unbelief.....

so there does seem to be some degree of lee way(at least in this life) for those who don't know or claim HIS name...

ps...i found the wink thing...it is from acts 17...paul said...

22Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device( i think about annaias' money).

30And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead
.

the reds together point to something here imo..

so they can go on in ignorant worship and unrepentence...but there is a day appointed in which they will answer...they should be able to know JESUS and who HE is, but their judgement for rejection is set for a certain day HE has appointed....

so i am also at this point leaning towards...

where more is given...more is required....

Act 5:5 KJV And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
Yet it does not say that God took his ghost, but that Ananias gave up his own ghost, most likely out of fear arising from the realization that he did indeed lie to God.

“But hearing these words, Ananias falling down expired.”

εξεψυξεν (expired or gave up the ghost) is aorist active indicative, meaning he did it himself. Were the expiration to have been done to him, the passive voice would be written (falling, he was expired).

Nothing is said in the text about God doing anything. Rather, the event may even be laid at the feet of Peter himself rather than God:

Act 5:12 KJV And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.

However, I hold the view that Ananias and his wife died because they themselves expected to – it was in accordance with their faith, as Jesus said,

Mat 9:29 KJV … According to your faith be it unto you.

Perhaps they did not have faith enough to allow themselves to be forgiven.

How much time would they need if their own faith expected God to kill them? (Or should I say that their own faith expected -caused- themselves to die?)

Contrast this with Acts 12:23 -

Act 12:23 KJV And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

This is how one would write about God doing the killing.

but friend it says nothing about them expecting GOD to kill htem...

acts 5:9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

doesn't sound like she had much to do with it to me...sounds more like peter(peter's faith) told her she was going to die for tempting the SPRIT of the LORD and she did...regardless of her feelings on it, if she had any...from what we are told...

Amen atoz, I'm with you all the way!

So do I love Esau or hate Esau? Seems an ez choice to me.

.....
Romans 9? Hosea 2 - God "hating" his harlot wife as a vessel of no mercy so that in love He can gather her to Him again as a veseel of mercy as Romans 9 "also saith".

As far as loving God first.
We love God first by doing what God says including loving our neighbor and our enemy. When we love or hate the least of Christ's brethren we do the same to Christ and to the Father. Hence why the second commandment is "like" the first and no commandment is greater than either of these two.

story done, bobf!!

I think tss has a point. Especially given Peter basically predicted Sapphira's demise.

PART 1.

1.
Matthew 4:
4 But he answered and said,
It is written,
Man shall not live by bread alone,
but
by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Luke 4:
4 And Jesus answered him,
saying,
It is written,
That man shall not live by bread alone,
but
by every word of God.

2.
Matthew 6:
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God,
and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you.

Matthew 22:
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37 Jesus said unto him,
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it,

Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments
hang
all the law and the prophets.

3.
Matthew 7:
12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them:
for this is the law and the prophets.

PART 2.

4.
Matthew 5:
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said,
Thou shalt love thy neighbour,
and
hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you,
Love [your neighbors
and
love] your enemies,

bless them that curse you,
do good to them that hate you,
and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven:

for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil
and
on the good,
and sendeth rain on the just
and
on the unjust.

46 For if ye love them which love you
[and
hate them who hate you],
what reward have ye?
do not even the publicans the same?

47 And if ye salute your brethren only
[and
do not salute strangers],
what do ye more than others?
do not even the publicans so?

48 Be ye therefore perfect,
even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

5.
Matthew 6:
24 No man can serve two masters:
for either he will hate the one,
and
love the other;
or else he will hold to the one,
and
despise the other.
Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

6.
John 15:
9As the Father hath loved me,
so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

7.
Philippians 2:
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

8.
1 John 4:
19 We love him,
because he first loved us.
