Sometimes we take the simple things for granted.. Wink

BREATHING EXERCISES

A 20% reduction in oxygen blood levels may be caused by the aging process and normal breathing habits. Poor breathing robs energy and negatively affects mental alertness. Unless breathing is exercised, aging affects the respiratory system as follows:
Stiffness: The rib cage and surrounding muscles get stiff causing inhalation to become more difficult. Less elasticity and weak muscles leave stale air in the tissues of the lungs and prevents fresh oxygen from reaching the blood stream.

Rapid, Shallow Breathing: This type of breathing, often caused by poor posture and weak or stiff muscles, leads to poor oxygen supply, respiratory disease, sluggishness, or heart disease.

BELLY BREATH EXERCISES
The following exercises are simple ways to deepen breathing and to cleanse the lungs. These exercises will also increase energy and decrease tension.
Lie flat on your back to get a proper sense of deep breathing. (Have some small pillows available to reduce strain by tucking them under the neck and knees. The natural course of breathing in that position will create a slight rise in the stomach upon inhaling and a slight fall upon exhaling.)
Place your hands palm down on your stomach at the base of the rib cage. (The lungs go that far down. What fills them deeper is the pushing down of the diaphragm. The diaphragm creates a suction which draws air into the lungs. the air is then expelled when the diaphragm pushes up. In this process, the life-giving oxygen fills the lungs and gets into the blood stream for distribution to the cells. Carbon dioxide is expelled from the blood into the about-to-be exhaled breath, thus cleansing the body and blood of waste products.) Lay the palms of your hands on your stomach just below the rib cage, middle fingers barely touching each other, and take a slow deep breath. (As the diaphragm pushes down, the stomach will slightly expand causing the fingertips to separate somewhat.

This movement indicates full use of the lungs, resulting in a truly deep breath rather than the "puffed chest" breath experienced by many as the greatest lung capacity. Chest breathing fills the middle and upper parts of the lungs. Belly breathing is the most efficient method. Infants and small children use only this method until the chest matures. The yoga breath or roll breathing combines belly and chest breathing.

FOR BEST RESULTS, PRACTICE THIS EXERCISE FOR 5 MINUTES.

COMPLETE BREATH EXERCISES
1. Sit up straight. Exhale.
2. Inhale and, at the same time, relax the belly muscles. Feel as though the belly is filling with air.

3. After filling the belly, keep inhaling. Fill up the middle of your chest. Feel your chest and rib cage expand.

4. Hold the breath in for a moment, then begin to exhale as slowly as possible.

5. As the air is slowly let out, relax your chest and rib cage. Begin to pull your belly in to force out the remaining breath.

6. Close your eyes, and concentrate on your breathing.

7. Relax your face and mind.

8. Let everything go.

9. Practice about 5 minutes.

HUMMING BREATH EXERCISES
Follow the instructions for inhaling the COMPLETE BREATH (Steps 1-3 above). Now, as you begin to slowly exhale, make a HUM sound. Keep making that humming sound as long as possible. Pull your stomach muscles in, squeezing out a few more seconds of humming. Then relax. Practice for 2 to 3 minutes.

CHINESE BREATH EXERCISES
A very fine, short (though not shallow) breath exercise comes from the Chinese Tai Chi Chuan. Three short inhales are done through the nose without exhaling. On the first inhale, the arms are lifted from the sides straight out in front at shoulder height. On the second, the arms are opened out straight to the sides while still at shoulder height. And on the third, the arms
are lifted straight over the head. Then, on the exhale through the mouth, the arms are moved in an arc back down to the sides. Usually, ten or twelve breaths are sufficient and will not cause light headedness. If light headedness should occur, simply stop the exercise. This exercise also has the effect of really opening up people physically. In subtle ways, this exercise uses the body in leading the mind and spirit to greater openness with each other and the environment.
CAUTION !! Especially for older people: Never do panting or shallow breathing except while seated. Hyperventilation may occur. As long as one is seated, hyperventilation will not be a problem because, even if a brief blackout should occur, the body's automatic breathing apparatus will immediately take over.

Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Psa 150:6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

Act 17:24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
Act 17:25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
Act 17:26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
Act 17:27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
Act 17:28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

In my music training, I've had to do breathing exercises too. The goal here is to be able to produced sustained full sound. The breathing exercise is to hold your finger in front of your mouth, about a foot away, pretend it's a candle, and blow out the 'candle' 15 times, about a second apart, with short, quick puffs. After that, hold the 'candle' out at arms length and repeat the procedure. This helps you to focus the air and also to get into that belly breathing Lone mentioned. Strangely, this exercise in short repeated puffs really does help produce long, sustained streams of air. It also helps you learn to take really quick breaths, which can be extremely useful while playing wind instruments or singing.

You know Ana,
I had a thought..oh oh...lol
You know when parents give their kids "time-outs"?
And the kids get all worked up and grumpy??

Maybe this would be a good exercise to have them do while in their time out..to get them to "slow down"..and "get a grip".. Very Happy Wink

just thinkin..

Yes, I believe that breathing, is a good idea....LOL.

Seriously, a persons' health and physical strength is increased by deep breathing.

I've been a martial artist for 29 years and a martial arts instructor for the last 12 years. Also in college I majored in "Exercise Physiology"...and have been a personal trainer. Breathing keeps us alive of course, but the quality of our breath and HOW we breath has a LOT to do with our physical health, strength, energy and ability. Oxygen is primary in most processes in our body...which is why we DIE quickly without it. Nine times out of ten if I have a Karate student performing badly or wearing out quickly, the solution lies in correcting how they are breathing. Someone who's breath is halting or being held will not be able to move smothly or efficiently.

Breathing habits run deep! Often we hold our breath at different points of the day...and unless you're submerged under water, it's not a good idea....ever.

Thank you for offering this advice and techniques here!

I tell the people that I train that there are a few (5) things they could do that would, w/in just a few days, GREATLY improve their health and energy level.
1. Breath: Practice mindful Deep-breathing exercises on a regular (scheduled) basis until their patterns become a habit.
2. Hydrate: Drink MORE water and cut down (or out) diuretics. MOST people spend MOST days in varying levels of dehydration...yet after oxygen, H2O is the next most important element to take in that our body cannot do without.
3. Get MORE sleep. Sleep deprivation is just as common as dehydration, and when coupled together cut down on our immune system AND our energy production by more than HALF!
4. Eat less at MORE meals. In other words, eat smaller portions at six or seven meals throughout the day. Our bodies can't digest nearly as much as we put in it at one sitting...yet it still moves it through at the same rate, preventing us from getting the most good from what we take in and then having an energy deficit between meals that makes us hungry, so we stuff our faces again...and start the process all over again. EVEN if you still take in the same stuff and amount of stuff per day...if you're digesting it better, you'll lose weight and it won't be nearly as hard on your body to struggle through. PLUS: since you're eating more frequently, you'll maintain your energy levels better...and then cutting down on how much you eat is much easier to do. ALSO: IF you do this and eat proteins and carbohydrates at DIFFERENT times, then you'll digest your food even better, as these two compete for enzymes in your digestive track.
#5: MOVE!!!
I'm an exercise NUT, but most aren't. That's Okay. Being the NUT that I am I fully & heartily recomend that people engage in a well rounded exercise program that includes resistance training for healthy muscles and bones, flexibility exercises to keep the body's defense mechanisms sound and young and at least 3-4 hours of some form of exercise that puts your heart rate at it's "Target Heart Rate Zone"....like swimming, jogging, biking, cardio aerobics....ec.
BUT: That's NOT for everyone.
The important thing is to get up and MOVE in some way that suits you. Get your body in motion. Go walk at the mall. You don't HAVE to walk like you're exercising, but at least stroll. Garden. Swim. Hike. Play some sport that makes you move.....even table tennis.
DO something.

I think that if someone were to work on these 5 things, consistently, they'd feel a tremdendous difference in as little as one - two weeks!
BUT: What they would do to change their LIVES w/in one year or ten years...
WOW!!!! a HUGE difference.

Hi Brother John,
much appreciated your post there..

My hubby and I are over the road truckers..he drives, I navigate. And it's so hard doing numbers #3, 4, and 5.
specially 5.
at least 80% of the time is sitting in the truck. Driving long hours and hundreds of miles at a time.
On occasion I jump the truck and come home for a few weeks to get back in shape what I've messed up on the road.
We used to eat in the truckstops with their oversized, over priced, over greasy meals and now eat out of the truck. Usually it's lean ones or weight watchers and they ave helped considerably.
sleeping can be a difficult thing to manage. Always needing to get to your destination on time and trying to beat the rush hour in certain cities and towns. You run when it's convienenet for the truck to run and maybe not so convienent for the body to run.
We take more "naps" than we do actual 8 hour rest periods. It can really wear you down at times.

Exercising..it's hard but we're working on it. Trying to fit in even a 30 minute walk a day can be challenging.
I came home about 4 weeks ago and began working out and eating better. I've lost 13 pounds..(got about 40 to go).. Rolling Eyes
But I'll be heading out again this week and I'm worried that everything I've taken off and accomplished will be put right back on again..oh bother..

any ideas on exercises that can be utilized in very small places. Our sleeper is about 3' wide and about 2' space for standing. The rest of the area which in total is 6' wide by 5' deep includes an oversized twin mat and 2 closets, 1 on each side. I have height..I can reach but when I bend to touch my toes I just about knock myself out on the stick shift..lol..
So I need to find "in place" exercises that don't take up any room at all.
kind of like the space "inside" a gym locker..lol..

walking is good, but it's not very advisable at night in the rest areas or parking lots of the truckstops..if your a female, which I am, a lot of people get the "wrong idea"..if your out wandering in the middle of the night..
Rolling Eyes

thanks for the post John..
hugs

I have found that it reduces stress significantly too. Stress is the leading cause of many illnesses according to scientific studies.

I have made my youngest slow down, take deep breaths and exhale them slowly when she becomes too anxious or stressed. It seems to help her too.

Wow Lone...
yeah, your situation doesn't lend itself very well to optimal fitness & health, but DON'T GIVE UP!
#1: You're worth it, daughter of God. (so's your hubby, not the 'daughter' part...but son Wink )
#2: IT CAN BE DONE. Very Happy
I'll look things up for you and come back with more, but here are some things I can think of right now. (Mind you, some of this will be hard to get across to you, because I'll be describing with words what I usually can just DO in front of the client and help them model me....but we'll work through it together)
OH...by the way, can I put LINKS to other websites so I can help you with ideas and references??? THAT would help a Great deal!

OK: Would you averse to learning Hatha Yoga?
I'm a Firm believer in the exercises of Hatha Yoga, but I'm strict about divorcing it FROM it's quasi-spiritual basis & history! (see what I'm saying?) There are even books and videos on HOW a Christian can approach Yoga with a totally clear conscience.
IF you are open to it, it will be GREAT. There's lots of good and gradually challenging work to be done in SMALL spaces w/in a Yoga workout.
I'll do more research on your special needs about this.

BUT: Here's one idea to toy with for now.
Can you do push ups? How many? Honestly. Even if you don't want to publicly tell us all "Hey....I can only do seven and then drop in a pool of sweat."......tsokay... just
1. take the number you can do in a row ((test yourself, after you've warmed up and stretched))...

2. then Add four to that number {don't panic, I'm getting somewhere}....take that number and divide it by six. (((By the way, are you guys movin a 60 foot rig??)))

3. Once you have this number, here's what you do: Begin in front of the rig (with your husband out there, if not DOING this with you........brow beat him if he doesn't...... then at least to support you and watch over ya. If he wants, he can help you count. If he teases you or gives you a hard time, super-glue his CB mic down!!!) once in front of your rig, take that number and perform that many deep squats (to the seated position, no further) then do that many push ups, then walk one lap around the rig, then RUN four laps around the rig. After that fifth lap around the rig, do the squats and pushups again, then repeat this process until you've done that process five times.
Do the jogging part DAILY.
Use the squats and pushups ONLY every other day, never two days in a row. If you feel especially sore, do the cardio part, but put the push ups and squats off another day.

It should give you a challenge and a good place to start.
I'd advise that you do this first thing in the morning before you head out on the road. It helps you wake up and exercising in the morning helps your metabolism get kicked into high gear. Doing this at night would probably (if you're past 30) make it more difficult for you to get to sleep. Sure...you'd be worn out, BUT your adrenalin and other beneficial hormones will also be kicked into gear and you'll probably be restless.

OK: I Need to also say this. You really aught to seek a doctors advice on this sort of thing. I don't know you, they do. So see if they think this will be good for you. But honestly, I don't know of ANY physician worth their white jacket, that would say that NOT getting some form of exercise was good....!

On the Diet: That's gonna take some extra forethought and preparation on your part!! What kind of cooler can you use? Fresh fruit and veggies are a must, but cutting way way down are starchy carbohydrates is a GOOD move. Also: Do your best to isolate the protein intake. In other words, when you're eating the meat of your diet, don't eat anything else with it. Like I said before, this makes a HUGE difference in your diet. My mother in law followed my advice on this one thing, as well as walking two laps around her block three times a day, and she lost a HUGE HUGE HUGE amount in only one year!!! (very proud of her)
IF you must snack, snack on something healthy!! ..and I can't emphasize this enough, the carbohydrates that you drink are 3 X WORSE than any other carbohydrates or fats that you could ever ingest!!! Don't ask me why, the science part of all of this is odd.....just trust me, the sugar you drink is the FAT YOU KEEP. !

Sleep: Ok...you're probably going to think I'm goony here, but there are great "hypnosis" cd's and tapes you can get that will help you get very well rested, even if you don't sleep as much. It's been proven that the greatest good you can get from sleep is in the Theta brain wave state, and you can get there MUCH faster through hypnosis than any other method. IF this interests you, I can suggest some products for you OR give you links if that's kosher on this site. ((I'm still so new here))
Also: Might look into, and ask your doctor about, using the over the counter supplement "Melatonin". Melatonin is the chemical that your hypothalamus secretes when you are asleep that helps you maintain a deeper sleep longer and it helps your body and mind regenerate better. LOTS of people use this to simply help them get a better nights sleep or get to sleep sooner. You can get it CHEAP at Wal-Mart and such places.

Along these lines, take a good multi-vitamin / mineral. We all should, unless your doctor says otherwise....and that's seldom.

OK: Hope you've read through.
I'm really wanting to help you out!!!

God Bless

Your Brother
John

Hi John,
some real good advice there Bro!

I picked up a couple yoga videos. and I've been working on my "balance", it's hard but not impossible.

push ups.. Shocked ..3.. Rolling Eyes funny you mentioned that, I just tried them last night..lol..

(we have a 48 foot step deck)

brow beating and super glue..ahhh..now that might work..lol.. Laughing

Quote:
Do the jogging part DAILY.
Shocked
I just figured out how to ride a bike again.. Very Happy

Quote:
After that fifth lap around the rig,
Shocked
five..??? oh my.. Shocked Laughing

Quote:

sometimes our day begins at midnight.. Wink

Quote:

that will be easy, I'm not much of a meat eater.
actually I have trouble eating certain foods that are crunchy or chewy..(no teeth).. Razz Laughing
(so I can't bite ya..lol)

coffee is my biggest downfall, lots of cream lots of sugar..but I've been doing much better with water lately.

In wal-mart..somewhere near the candle section or cd/dvd section they have a display with hmm..meditative music I guess you call it. Celtic, drums, tropical easy gentle listening stuff. When I can't sleep I pop in one of these and they are very relaxing.

It's so much easier to do this stuff when I'm home and alone..otherwise I get the mean eyed hairy look..(what in the world are you listening too..?? Rolling Eyes )..lol..

I'm going to give those squats a shot and try to get over my "shyness" of actually working "outside" the truck. always thinking everyone is looking at me odd like..you know?..lol..

I appreciate all this
thanks a bunch
hugs

Self-promotion is often considered spam. Quoting from the same website a lot is sometimes seen as spam. My advice: use links sparingly and only to share something interesting or support your point. Here's the official word though:
