Hello All-

As some of you know, I work in a doctor's office. One of the benefits of working there, which I thoroughly enjoy, is having great conversations with people from different walks of life.

Recently, I had a patient who was reading a book about vegetarianism, and the spirituality of vegetarians. Naturally I was quite intrigued, so the man (who is 39 and has been a vegetarian all his life) and I got into quite an interesting discussion.

He stated that there was a certain "spirituality" about people who made vegetarianism a way of life. Now while I consider myself a spiritual person, I am very fond of double cheeseburgers, so I asked him to share his philosophy with me.

While he admitted he was not much into Bible study, he said he remember certain things from Sunday school as a boy. One of them was that Adam and Eve were vegetarians, and God intended all to be vegetarians in the garden of Eden.

HUH???????? Shocked

Be still my cholesterol laden heart! I ran to my Bible. Sure enough:

Genesis 1: 29
29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food." And it was so.

It seems everything was meant to eat plants.
It is not until after the flood that God gives man meat.

Genesis 9:1

1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. 2 The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. 3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. 4 "But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it.

Fascinating!

Now let's go back a bit. The man also told me he thought the reason God was upset with Cain was because Cain made meat sacrifices while Abel sacrificed vegetables and grains. A quick look clarified that. Actually, the opposite is true.

Genesis 4: 2-5
Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. 4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

Anyway, I thought this was a great topic and wondered what you all thought about it. There is a great deal of reference to diet in the Bible, but I was more interested in the "spirituality" of food as a topic. Let me know what you think.

Eleven!

Where have u been?
Missed ya!
Welcome back!

There is as much spirituality in eating meat as in eating veggies as long as we eat either one or the other or both in the Spirit of Love for both!smile
Matthew 5:45.

Not to mention that veggies make good human meat and flesh!smile
So it is as good to eat meat as veggies since the animals eat veggies,
as it is 'wrong' to eat the meat which the animals produce from eating their veggies!smile

Not to mention how God does the miracle of making green into white: green grass into white milk!smile

So with Love for all words or foods being key,
Mt 5:43-48
we can easily figure out why God was upset with cain:

God was upset with Cain ONLY for Cain's sin of
HATING MEAT EATERS
AND HATING blood-shedders
and HATING blood-shedding as Abel was and did to offer his meat offering,
while Cain was
LOVING ONLY PLANT-EATERS AND VEGETARIANS
and LOVING ONLY JUICE-SHEDDERS
and LOVING ONLY juice-shedders as cain was and did to offer his offering of his first fruits.

So Abel's offering was aceptable,
NOT because it was meat,
but because it was offered in Love for both the one he did offer and for the one he did NOT offer, which of course was what Cain chose to offer: first fruits, which are also just as acceptable to God as meat.

Therefore, Abel's keeping flocks and offering a meat offering proves that God meant for man to eat meat and potatoes from Day 7, if not Day 1, and NOT only from after the Flood!smile

Hope that helps.

Welcome back!

Heya, were you referring to me as batman?smile

With the Love that makes all food and all meat and all veggies and all numbers--even eleven!smile-- spiritual and so acceptable to God,smile

Hi eleven.

I'm a vegetarian myself. Not because of anything I read in the Bible, but because it just seemed like the right choice for me. As far as the spirituality of vegetarianism is concerned I can only say this. Being a vegetarian will not make anyone more spiritual IMHO. However, spirituality may lead some to this particular path.

There are some vegetarians who are that way through no conscious choice. They are raised vegetarian from a very young age, and find as adults that the thought of meat sickens them. Others -- like me -- choose to become vegetarians as adults.

As a vegetarian Christian I have been aware of the vegetarianism of Adam and Eve for some time. It is interesting how the issue of eating animals has been an ongoing dialog throughout history.

Everyone draws the line somewhere. Even those who enjoy a good hamburger (like my daughter) would think twice if offered a nice plate of chimpanzee, I suspect.

Well I'll agree with you there. I have about 40 more lbs. of goodness to lose. Confused or disgusted

Now this is interesting, cause part of the argument that this man presented was that today's meat raised animals are being treated unethically (true) and that vegetarians were more in tune to their plight.

I'm not quite sure about that. It is a given fact that consuming meat takes more work on the part of the digestive system then consuming fruit and vegetables. Part of the reason for fasting is because it shuts down the digestive system and makes people more alert and mindful (spiritual)? So in that respect, maybe being a vegetarian is more "spiritual"??

Only between humans, because God gives us a choice.
Romans 14: 5-7

5One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone.

Each and both are equally good and right when both are loved.

atoz: that was cain's attitude:
he loved farmers but hated ranchers just as that man's argument was that he loves the ethical and hates the unethical.
The same old farmer vs shepherder antagonism.

atoz: That now refers more to attitude than time.
The key word in that verse is 'as.'
How did God give the green plants?
In Love or in hate?
So 'now' means 'also.'

KJV:
3Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.

Plus: To make a meat offeriing,
you had to eat some of what parts were not offered.
Right?

I have also heard that Fish Oil is good in helping to lower cholesterol. In my experience, it also keeps the skin and eyes moist (so that the skin is not so itchy and the eyes are not so dry).

I like meat quite a bit. I also like vegetables and fruit a lot and find that anymore, I eat a great deal of fruits and vegetables. My breakfasts include some kind of meat 1-2 times per week. The rest of the week I normally eat fruit &/or cereal. We usually eat oatmeal and raisins once a week, dry cereal (often with fruit) 4-5 times a week. My lunches more and more usually include 1 or 2 servings of vegetables, 1 serving of fruit and sometimes a little meat. Dinners usually have meat as a part of the meal and a vegetable side dish. On Fridays, I usually go out to lunch and have a chicken sandwich, salad, chili or something like that.

I respect vegetarians but I don't think I could do it. I ordered a vegetarian pizza once and I hated it. My oldest daughter spent a few months trying the vegetarian lifestyle so, needless to say, we ate a lot of fruits and veges during that time but I still had my meat.
One night, I was cooking sloppy joes with diced onions, green peppers and sliced mushrooms. The smell got to her. She decided then and there that she is not a vegetarian, had a sloppy joe for dinner and never looked back.

Before this last week my diet consisted of hmm..
Coffee for breakfast and an occasional sausage egg and cheese mcmuffin with hashbrowns..
Lunch..taco bell, or Burgerking, or the buffet at the truckstop. Dinner..chips dip, cookies, whatever was handy.
As of last sunday I have a bowl of cheerios, either a banana or yogurt for a mid morning snack, soup and sandwich..PB&J my favorite or tuna on whole wheat or a salad. Dinner we've been trying out those smart ones or the weightwatcher dinners and pop them in the microwave. Graham crackers or celery to snack on during the inbetween meals.
I'm kind of limited on munchies like nuts or fresh fruit and veggies..no teeth makes it a little difficult to get a good grip on the crunchy stuff lol.
I'm going to fix that soon. all I want for xmas is a set of teeth..LOL..

Been doing better walking around a little more than usual and doing stretches in the truck. Not much room to flex your muscles but every little bit counts..I hope.

I have 50 pounds I'd like to lose and one of the things most diets say is to cut your red meat intake to 2-3 servings a week. I'm not much for chicken or fish but I'm working them in a little at a time.

Two days ago I had grilled lemon pepper catfish. First time I ever tried it. It was pretty good.
I like clams and scallops and shrimp but I don't know if they have the same omega 3 fish oil benefits as regular fish does.
I'm using the fridge more now than before. Less eating out at the restaurants..maybe once a week as a treat. But the portion sizes are so large. So I eat half and box the other half for another meal later.

It's funny though..
In the new testament Peter was told that it's ok to eat everything just like after the flood God told Noah it was ok to eat meat. But before Peter and before the flood there were diet restrictions to only veggies or only clean meat.
Has changing the diet from only veggie to clean meats to anything goes...helped us or hurt us, nutritionally?
We are told it's not what goes in the body but what comes out the mouth and from the heart..from a spiritual standpoint. But I can tell you, when you don't eat right your body protests. You get overweight, rundown, may even lead to depression and serious injuries and illnesses.
So maybe it's a test to see if we would learn to restrain or teach ourselves what is good and what isn't good to put inside our bodies and minds.
The disciples were told to beware of the leaven of the pharisees, and Jesus explains that he was talking about their doctrines and not their bread. But maybe it could relate to both. We are after all...Body, Mind, and Soul.
And unless it's all working together as one good healthy running machine, something lacks and breaks down which can upset the whole.

I love prime rib and cheeseburgers and beef tacos and pork chops and ice cream and candy bars and..and..
but they don't love me..lol..

moderation, moderation, moderation...but everything LOOKS SO GOOD..LOL..

I've cut down from 4-24oz coffees with 5 sugars and lots of 1/2 and 1/2..to 1-16 oz coffee with 1 1/2 sugar and 1% milk and water or crystal lite the rest of the day.
My body is in shock LOL..caffeine headaches but I know in time these will reduce and eventually go away.
I also drink more orange juice and V8..

I'm going to try tofu and soy next. I've never had them so it could be interesting.
I really need to find a way to get more excersise during the day though, that's the hard part. In the past 8 years I've gone from a size 10-12 to a 16-18.
I'm hoping to get back to the 10-12 by summer.
holy cucmbers batman..I just might get there too..LOL..

I think it's just as important what we put in our bodies as we put in our minds. But we all need a little bit of everything. Meat, nuts, and some dairy is good for protein and makes your muscles strong. But we don't need too much protein we don't need to eat a cow everyday...LOL..

Maybe God allowing man to have complete control over our diets, can kind of reflect how we eat spiritually as well as physically. If we grab anything and eat it because it looks good or smells good or tastes good...are we doing the same thing with what we feed our minds? and spirits?

just some food for thought..LOL..
think thin..lol..
hugs

Hi luv!

I eat a fair bit of veggie pizza. But I like it with lots of cheese (veggies also) and pizza sauce. Although I'm a vegetarian, my diet is probably no healthier than your typical meat eater.

It just occurred to me after reading this thought that both (eating right and speaking in a manner befitting a Christian) require much self-discipline and self-control.

Thanks for pointing that out, Lone.

Dinosaurs...
Now there were two kinds of dinosaurs..the veggies and the meat eaters.
What makes some animals carniverous and others not?
I think when God told man he could eat meat he was saying we're becoming more like carniverous animals all the time..LOL..
Ecc 3:18 I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

1Cr 6:12 ¶ All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
1Cr 6:13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body [is] not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.

meat and fornication all in the same mouthful. what do you suppose they have in common? Confused or disgusted

Hbr 13:9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For [it is] a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.

diverse and strange doctrines are as meat which effect the heart...thinking cholesterol..hmm..

I still believe the bible is more spiritual food than it is for physical dietary food.

bread and meats refering to doctrines:

Num 21:4 ¶ And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
Num 21:5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for [there is] no bread, neither [is there any] water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
Num 21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

Beware the leaven of the Pharisees..the generation of vipers..the fiery serpents God sent among the people because they didn't like the "light" bread...or the "way".

They wanted meat...

Psa 78:18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.
Psa 78:19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
Psa 78:20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

(Jhn 6:55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.)

Psa 78:21 Therefore the LORD heard [this], and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;
Psa 78:22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:
Psa 78:23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,
Psa 78:24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.
Psa 78:25 Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full.

(Num 11:6 But now our soul [is] dried away: [there is] nothing at all, beside this manna, [before] our eyes. )

(Jhn 6:31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
Jhn 6:49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
Jhn 6:58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. )

Psa 78:26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.
Psa 78:27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:
Psa 78:28 And he let [it] fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

(Luk 2:46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. )

Psa 78:29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;
Psa 78:30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat [was] yet in their mouths,
Psa 78:31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen [men] of Israel.

(1Sa 15:28 And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, [that is] better than thou.
Mat 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.)

Psa 78:32 For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.
Psa 78:33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.

Num 21:5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for [there is] no bread, neither [is there any] water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

light bread:

Jhn 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Jhn 6:48 I am that bread of life.

Jhn 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Pro 30:7 ¶ Two [things] have I required of thee; deny me [them] not before I die:
Pro 30:8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:
Pro 30:9 Lest I be full, and deny [thee], and say, Who [is] the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God [in vain].

what is convenient food? and why after being filled would one deny the Lord?

I think the meat they wanted in the wilderness was vanity and lies rather than the light bread of truth and love.

2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
2Ti 4:4 And they shall turn away [their] ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

I really do believe history repeats itself..

so when the bible talks about clean and unclean meats, in my heart I believe it relates more to teachings and doctrines and who our teachers are more so than the actual animals mentioned.
Like it would be better to be taught or to eat the meat/doctrine from a lamb , calf, or dove, than it would be to be taught by say a vulture or rat or snake...

I believe the animals refer to our personalities and types.

Not that there isn't a lot of sound principles for the physical body, but I tend to lean on the more spiritual angel food side than the actual physical instructions and directions...
soul food..

anywhooo..
a very interesting topic.. Very Happy

So maybe it's a test to see if we would learn to restrain or teach ourselves what is good and what isn't good to put inside our bodies and minds.

It just occurred to me after reading this thought that both (eating right and speaking in a manner befitting a Christian) require much self-discipline and self-control.

Thanks for pointing that out, Lone.

Hi Luv,

But when we have faith, that "self"-discipline and "self"-control become a joint venture...for we are not alone.. Wink

Whatever do you mean 'pray for 48 hour days'?

Oh, that's easy. I have incredibly busy schedule, so I thought I would ask God to give me a 48 hour day.
He did. Now I have twice as much to do in 24 hours.
(Watch what you pray for - you just might get it) Confused or disgusted

Each and both (meat and veggies) are equally good and right when both are loved.

Ok, so what happens when one hates liver?? Mad

Quote:

God was upset with Cain ONLY for Cain's sin of
HATING MEAT EATERS
AND HATING blood-shedders
and HATING blood-shedding as Abel was and did to offer his meat offering,

Now this is interesting, cause part of the argument that this man presented was that today's meat raised animals are being treated unethically (true) and that vegetarians were more in tune to their plight.
Quote:

atoz: that was cain's attitude:
he loved farmers but hated ranchers just as that man's argument was that he loves the ethical and hates the unethical.
The same old farmer vs shepherder antagonism.

So was Cain incorrect for his view on animal treatment?

3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.

atoz: That now refers more to attitude than time.
The key word in that verse is 'as.'
How did God give the green plants?
In Love or in hate?

Depends. Do I have to eat ocra?
