As a Christian, it's getting harder and harder to find something decent, funny, informative or educational on TV.

The other night, my 9-year old and I were flipping through the local channels. On one channel there was a well-known country artist singing a song. I paused there a moment. My daughter asked me to turn it as he was singing a song about getting drunk and I did turn it. The channel I turned it to had some drama about someone who was abusing drugs. We flipped to another channel and there were drug and drinking references on the sitcom on that channel.

Another night not too long ago, I was flipping through the local channels trying to find something reasonable to watch for a little while. I was the only one there at the time. I turned on a sitcom that I'd only ever watched maybe once or twice before called 2-1/2 men. This episode was about a girl who called and told the character played by Charlie Sheen that she was pregnant and he was the daddy. He was going to get a vasectomy so he could continue his lifestyle.

There's another comedy called "Will and Grace" that I did not care for but watched a few times because my husband liked it. I started getting up & going in the other room when it was on and he stopped turning it on.

Another one is George Lopez. Lots of adult humor and disrespect of parents in that one. Georges mother comes across as a terrible mother and she disrespects him and he cuts her down. Ha Ha. Hilarious....NOT.

Cartoons are no better these days.

Needless to say, we shut the TV off a lot in our house. There's too much trash any more. We haven't even addressed the sex and violence on TV yet.....

Heya Luv!

How are ya?smile

I agree--it's mostly crap on tv.

What I do is:
Just love that crap,
then switch channels in Love or turn it off in Love---so that None of my Love is ever turned off, and it's a double turn on when I turn it on!smile

If I hate crap,
I have already switched my Love and turned off myLove,
and then
it's a double switch or a double turn-off when I do switch channels or turn it off.

Then,
of course,
if the Bible were ever made into movie, with a chapter an episode,
then we could turn it on and switch the cannel to the channel and watch it in Love of all the nice stuff, all the unnice stuff and all of what else we call crap!smile

with Love always turned on and never switched off so we could watch the movie even if we did or didn't read the book, smile

I don't know what that one is either.

We watch a lot of Medical Diagnosis, Medical Mysteries, Diagnosis X, Dog Whisperer and nature shows on NatGeo these days. I just shut it off much more these days and we go read or play a board game during the winter months and head outdoors when the weather and time of day permits.

I liked the History Channel when it first started, but it has slowly slid down the slope into distortion for the sake of popular excitement. When we were closer to the city (and rabbit ears worked) we mostly watched PBS (e.g. Nova). My kids were surprised when going off to college that nobody knew of the British comedies they grew up to consider normal. Laughing (Faulty Towers, Chef, etc.)

We now take DVD’s out of the library, or rent a movie here and there.

My favorite things to watch are Disney (the old movies), Looney Tunes and (Disney) Pixar animation movies.

I've gotten a lot more in to turning TV off over the past couple of years and taking my daughter in to the kitchen to cook, doing science experiments, crocheting, learning sign language, drawing, playing board games, playing with clay or any number of other activities indoors or out that we can think of.

I have a TV on right now for background noise. I had been kinda sorta halfway watching a movie. It was OK but when the movie got over, I started typing and I heard some off-color comments. Will and Grace were on. I turned it to a local channel. Two people were coming as close to having sex as the local networks and their affiliates probably allow so I turned it over to 'Life or Death,' a medical documentary show on Discovery.

What sucks is that the radio is no better. Too many songs about fonication, adultery, killing, fighting, indiscriminate sex, drinking, partying....the list goes on. My index finger gets quite a work out changing the channel. When I get tired of musical channels, I shut it off too.

How I Met Your Mother is pretty much the best show on TV right now and you'd hate it since there's casual sex and "drug abuse" and plenty of drinking

As far as entertainment goes, I don't think theres many options. I confess that I watch tons of garbage I shouldn't. But I oh-so look forward to Sunday mornings because theres so many good programs on. But what really bites about that for me is I'm always tired b/c I just got off from 12 hour shift the night before Sad
Amazing Facts Ministries' program is a big bowl of awesome Razz

Edit: *Light-bulb*

A suggestion I can give is getting DVR and recording shows that you know you can let your kids watch, and ones you like yourself. Let the DVR stockpile shows for about a week and you should have more than enough to enjoy without worry. When you don't keep up with the shows on it, you will end up with more than you could ask for as far as T.V. goes. Hope this helps Very Happy

The Bible tells us to SHUT OF BAD TV.
1Cor5: 13But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

1Tim6: 5Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

Our TV is tuned to the discovery channel all the time, or home renovation shows. No sex, violence, OR drugs on those networks, and relatively few ads! Cool

That's very good, Ana!

But how do you censor the images of sex and violence when you read, let's say, The Song of Solo, and Genesis and Exodus?

with the Love that transforms what books we read and what movies we see,

I don't censor my incoming information. I want to know all there is to know so I can make the best decisions possible. I like being informed. All I said was that the TV we watch in our house is pretty inoffensive.

However, that brings up an interesting point - luvnlife, do you censor the Bible for your children, or do you let them see all the sex and violence in there? Actually, I changed my mind - direct this question to the masses! Very Happy

Thanks for your response, PrysdieHeer!

I don't censor the bible. We read and talk about all in the bible. We have talked about Sodom and Gomorrah and the devils angels and many other things.

Because I don't censor the bible in my house, it does mean I have to really study it though so that I am able to answer whatever questions my daughter may have. I have all of you to thank for helping me walk through some of the questions I have had. You have all made me think about what I am reading and have also given me much food for thought.

No, I don't censor the bible in my house.....

I leave censoring the bible to the church.
