Boss,
I'll reply to that. Let's turn back the clock about 150 years and see how the following would have been accepted by society back then:
1. Abortion on demand
2. Abolishment of religion in the classroom
3. Undermining the president in a time of war
4. Porn shops on the street corner
5. The use of profanity in front of women or children
6. Scantily clad women in public
7. Children being taught to put condoms on vegetables
8. Gay parades and mock crucifixions in front of churches.
9. Adultery with no consequences
10. Crosses and Ten Commandment plaques being banned
11. Men going shirtless in the presence of a woman
12. School children being indoctrinated with the tenants of Islam
13. Cross dressing in public
14. Making depictions of Christ in a jar of urine
15. Evolution being taught as fact and even the mention of intelligent creation being banned in school
16. Lobbying to allow underage girls to get an abortion without the parents' knowledge or consent
17. Passing out condoms in school and telling kids, "you're going to do it anyway, so be safe"
18. City wide gun bans
19. Weekend furloughs for convicted murderers
20. Rock concerts with nudity and defacation on stage
21. The War on Christmas
22. A woman flashing the crowd on stage at a superbowl
23. Teachers having sex relationships with their students
24. Cop killer cd rap albums
25. Legalized prostitution
26. Men kissing each other in public
27. Unwed couples shacking up
28. compulsery taxes for welfare and other gimme programs
29. Entire cities devoted to gambling
30. The Pledge of Allegience banned in schools
So you're wacked out theory that this country has always been liberal is so far out of touch with reality as to not even be considered seriously, hence RevJP's first reaction. The truth is, while we have always had our faults and foibles, this country used to be wholesome, patriotic, prayerful, and decent. The wickedness of America today is in stark contrast to what America used to be. |

every one of those examples of "Sin" was somewhere in America and while there wasn't television and the big media like there is today which makes everyone aware of these things, they existed.
1.Abortion was on demand but it wasn't a public item of speculation it was a private and unfortunately deadly practice that took place in back alleys and unsafe conditions frequently killing both mother and child.
2.Science has attempted to oust religion from the classroom since the so called "enlightenment" what's new about this? In times past it was the conservatives which supported evolution and the aristocracy which claimed special status because of their "breeding" and religion was something for the masses.
3.Read about the attempts to undermine Lincoln during the civil war!
4. Porn shops have been around since the dark ages the advent of video recently has made this more common but some of the earliest photographs were of pornographic subject matters.
5.Profanity: the words used have changed over the centuries but each and every era has its own vernacular phrases and they have never left us.
6.Go to Polynesia, or Southeast Asia there all the women are scantily clad or used to be since it was extremely hot and humid, you'll find that clothing is a cultural thing not religious. Also again the modern media makes it worse.

Well sorry to burst your bubble but that is simply not true. With the exception of the things which were simply unavailable 150 years ago because they weren't invented yet. It is the sanitized history books that just dont bother to include all of this stuff that makes people like you and REVJP think they didn't exist. But in fact with the noted exceptions each and everyone has been around for a very long time.
Study the English civil war with Oliver Cromwell and the puritans taking over England briefly. Their intentions were honorable but with the best of intentions their religious conservatism lead to a dictatorship ( sorry protectorate)
Then the issues were social dancing and (it seemed) nearly anything that produced pleasure. They banned Christmas since it wasn't scriptural. A conservative movement on a societal scale that failed miserably and lead to the act of toleration, something I'm guessing that is revolting to REVJP, since he doesn't seem to tolerate much at all. |

| Quote: |
You said:
Quote:
Conservative would like us to still be British.
Conservative would have us all live on the Eastern seaboard
Conservatives would leave us with slavery, and offer tax incentives for the owners.
Conservatives would still support the buggy whip industry with horses and the auto industry wouldn't have caught on.
To which I asked if you had some socio-political/economic substance to back up those outlandish assertions?
Now you add:
Quote:
conservatism in its raw form is just a way of returning to some past that may or may not have even existed. Holding onto a mythos of how things were (at least in their own minds).
To which I ask the same thing as above. |

If that was a personal attack (and I dispute this assertion)then I need to find some more dramatic way of insulting people. (I'm kind of out of practice)
The bottom line is that many history books have been sanitized and if you do anything but go through the detritus of history's unknowns you will never find the way things actually are and continue to think "noble thoughts" about our nation's past.
As an amateur historian I understand how these things disappear in favor of the really "important" issues. |

I'm sorry you don't view your comments as personal, or as attacks, but when I read this:
| Quote: | | something I'm guessing that is revolting to REVJP, since he doesn't seem to tolerate much at all. |
I see it as personal and an attack on my character based on nothing I've said or done. |

I'm able to get very personal and insulting (when I am willing) but I am clear out of practice so let's not start.
Mild humorous references need not be insulting though? Unless the object of that is entirely too sensitive. |

| Ah, it was a mild humorous reference then? Sorry I misunderstood you. I must've missed all the little 'smiley' faces, and 'winky' faces and other such indicators of one attempting to offer humor over the internet. |

That's the liberal defense: "People were just as bad in the past, but it was hidden and nobody talked about it."
An easy claim to make as it requires no proof, just like those who claim that Bush blew up the WTC and staged the attacks.
People were raised with prayer and Biblical principle. They were raised morally straight. Isn't it possible that most people in such an environment would be upright in their sexual ethic? Or do you claim that upbringing has little to no bearing on people's behavior as adults? Since you make a claim that beggars belief and defend it with a conspiracy theory, I'll assume you can't back up your position. |

SMDT it is interesting the vitriol against such an obvious assertion.
Those amongst us who share the more conservative point of view have been confronted with something that just blows them away. Diverges from their little cocoons that encase them in a safe little area and yet they have no repost in which to debate this idea they just gag on it.
The miracle of American politics is that with a 60/40 liberal/conservative split, the conservatives have been able to elect anyone at all. Truth to tell, just like the current split in the conservatives due to the failure of the Bush presidency, those liberals have been split several times over the many years of this republic.
The latest was at the end of the Lyndon Johnson presidency when Nixon won. Obviously the Johnson administration with its Vietnam issue many liberals split off and they lost the presidency.
Guiliani, if he is nominated, will make the McGovern candidacy look like they were brilliant. |

Heya Boss,

Well, nothing so far indicates the man is lacking in intelligence. I don't subscribe to the notion of conservative-good, liberal-evil. I think both can be represented by good or evil people. I think Guiliani is pure ambition and despotism, just like Hillary Clitler. I think they both represent what is evil about their respective parties.
There are no candidates that inspire hope in me except for the Libertarians. |
