What is the Soul?

If you had to describe the Soul, what would you say? You have a soul, I have a soul, but just exactly what is the soul and if you and I have one, how would you describe it?

So, just what is the soul?

I don't believe in the concept of a "Soul", but I'll give you my view on what others might call the soul.
Our selfawareness, and our personal moral on what's right and wrong. i.e. thoughts, and acting upon the belief that one think is the right way of living one's life.

Hi Johnn,

"Mans inter life." That's what I would say the soul is.
Gen. 2:7
Quote:
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

A website that deals with this question:

http://www.theoquest.com/learning/?fa=curious&art=10
I don't necessarily agree with everything, but it's at least an answer that has some merit to it.

According to Merriam-Wesbster Dictionary, this is two of the definitions of the soul:

: the moral and emotional nature of human beings b : the quality that arouses emotion and sentiment c : spiritual or moral force

the spiritual principle embodied in human beings, all rational and spiritual beings, or the universe
http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=soul

I guess in essence you could say it's the spiritual side of our nature, that is embodied in our moral and emotional nature. Don't know if that helps or confuses more. 8)

Some people think that is a spirit that dwells in you which leaves your body when you die. Others believe that it is your body itself.

I would say the soul is "the breath of life" God breathed into the nostrels of Adam. You see no other animal come to life in this manner. I believe that is what part of the understanding of "Let us create man in Our image" means. To have a moral compass indwelling you. I do not think the soul and the Spirit are the same thing. Every man has a soul. Not every man has the Spirit of God. This is a gift available to those who confess Christ.

I think this is also part of the concept of the Trinity. When God said "Let Us make man in Our image" man was made with a body, a Spirit and a soul, three parts of one whole. But now I'm getting on to other areas!! Wink
