Check out the original Greek word, it is psyche, specifically the human psyche.
Soul
Usage Number: 1
Strong's Number: <G5590>
Original Word: ψυχή, psychē
Usage Notes: denotes "the breath, the breath of life," then "the soul," in its various meanings.
—Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words
And what is the human psyche made up of?
Thoughts
Emotions
Feelings
Memories
The ability to reason
The ability to know right from wrong
The sinful nature
The some total of those intangible, invisable parts of the Body are the Soul.
There is however, once we are born again, another part that thinks and is in tune with God, and that is the spirit. Prior to being born again, the spirit is dead:
Ephesians 2:4-5 (NKJV)
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), |
