I don't quite know why there is a 'challenge' or a 'take me on' in a bible study. So go for it...
yet if you want a great study on Hebrews, here you go:
bereansonline (dot) org/outlines/hebworkbook.pdf
You can get the audio lessons that go with it here:
bereansonline (dot) org/audio/default.htm
or on iTunes...

I am reasonably intelligent but simple-minded. Still, I cannot promise you that I won't ask questions, share my point of view or even debate at times. I've been told I am a bit stubborn now and then.
I have been around the board a while but have not done a bible study (here on this site, I mean...). I don't really know how this works.... maybe someone who does know can enlighten me. How do you choose someone to study with? Or does someone choose you? How do you make it private? How do you sign up for a private study? What if you want 3 or 4 people involved in the study? These are just a few questions I have....
If you know your stuff (scripturally speaking), you know (or are willing to find out) how this forum works and you like a challenge, let me know.
Thanks,

Tell me what you know about Melchizedek. Who is he? Is he a metaphor? Is he a precursor of Jesus? Or perhaps he is Shem. Maybe Melchizedek is in reference to a priesthood or a walk of life. Maybe the Levitical priesthood refers to the timeframe before Jesus that carried on even after his birth, life and subsequent death. Or could it be that the Levitical priesthood refers to the religious sector which is perceived by onlookers to be holy but still has a wondering eye and heart for things of this world? It's entirely possible that the Melchizedek priesthood on the other hand refers to those who walk in Jesus footsteps regardless of the cost. Christians who understand that part of what Jesus taught is that we are to obey God and obey the laws of the land so long as the laws of the land do not interfere with their walk with God. What do you think? You'd be surprised at how many schools of thought there are on this subject.
What about tithe? Does it still or should it still apply in modern churches? Do we follow the OT or the NT? Is the tithe that is being spoken of strictly monetary, partly monetary or is it a sharing of necessities among believers in God and Jesus? It may be charitable acts ~ offering a helping hand to strangers, co-workers and neighbors. If a church makes a 10% tithe a condition of baptism, is this in keeping with Gods desire? If someone is giving 10% to the church, is it acceptable for the church to ask for more to cover other costs (like guest speakers, missions, youth group, building funds, van repair etc... or is the church to use the tithe gathered for these purposes also? Once again, there are all kinds of scriptures that give clues as to what 'tithe' really is about but there are only certain scriptures regarding tithe that will ever be preached from a pulpit in my experience.
Thanks for the tip...

Hey Luvn,
The short answer is: You couldn't tithe if you wanted to.
Taint possible. Jews don't even tithe today.
The tithe was intended to support the Levitical Priesthood, and the temple in Jerusalem - neither, of which, exists today. They went out of existence around 69 A.D.
Any preacher who insists on a 'tithe' is taking your money under false pretenses and you should call him on it. I remember a sermon by D.J. Kennedy who said if you didn't tithe, your salvation was in doubt. What a crock.
Most preachers who insist on a tithe, have the nerve to tell you that it is only the start, because you should give freely over and above. They usually try to shame you into giving to the point of putting you into the poorhouse.
Had an idea! If he mentions tithing again, print this post out and hand it to him. |

| Sorry folks, I may have hijacked this thread with the above post, but then again, someone new to Bible study and church attendance, may get a little help about what he may hear the first time he goes to a church. Newbies can be vulnerable, unlike this hardened old man. Pete |

Hi Pete,
Your input about the tithe is appreciated and no you haven't hijacked this thread. Our study has actually been set up in a different place, that's why no one is posting here. If your interesting in joining the study send a post to luvnlife. I'm sure your imput will be much appreciated. If you wanna browse our study go to:
If you read the whole thread you'll notice we went on a bit of a detour with sharing our personal stories but it was a warming experience that helped bring us closer together. We all feel like family now. So if this hardened ole man can handle a bit of sloppy love sharing here and there, I'm sure you will be most welcome.
Sincerely
Bitterlily

I'll go ya one better. If tithing is a "principle" as so many evangelist preach - particularly TV evangelists, then I challenge them to end their message with this thought:
Please don't feel obligated to send your money to me. Take your tithe money to any local church in your area.
Ssuuuuurrrrrre, that'll happen. |

you know what I find interesting..
They were taught to count, even to the exact weight of everything and to judge by weights and measures.
They were told to give ten percent and I'm gathering they brought exactly that to the penny.
Jesus tells us to give up everything and follow him.
How can you put a price on etrnal life in peace and happiness?
It's a numbering and counting thing...like David numbered Israel and it says he was tempted to do so by Satan..
I don't believe God wants us to give because we are requested or demanded to do so, but rather from a cheerful heart and out of neccesity.
If there is a choice between feeding your children and puting a new pew in the church building, which do you suppose God would find more acceptable?
Is the building more important than the people that are in it?
Is the Pastor or Preacher more enttled to that new car or that new suit then your family having their bills paid, (because your not supposed to borrow), to have food on the table, (because your not supposed to steal), to put clothes on your families back, (because going naked is not what God intended in the first place, that's why he gave man skins to cover themselves).
If someone is truly in need of the bare essentials, then I would say, regardless of their status or title help them if you can. But if it's to give them more than what they need to survive and it causes your own family hardships and sorrow, then you need to care for the gifts God has placed under your roof first.
Or to give that help to someone truly in need.
You have to weigh and decide the good weights and the true needs or if they are just greedy and trying to build themselves up.
that's my opinion..

I agree with you LT.
Many times we have a guest preacher/speaker at our church. The last one talked about how he has been around the world several times, and how God has blessed him abundantly , and how he and his son got the opportunity to go to Mt. Kilamanjaro, and how they experienced disappointment because they were not able to climb that day...........whatever.
At the end of the service, the regular pastor gets up and give us this crappola about how we are to "bless the man of God" (with money....make your check out to....) for sharing this inspirational message with us.
Are you freaking kidding me??? I haven't had an honest to goodness vacation in all my life, and I'm going to bless him because he is a "man of God."??
What the hell am I, chopped liver??? |

Gosh I share your thoughts to the tee. I think I have already been signed up? I would love to study with you in Hebrews too even though I am a late starter At he same time I sometimes feel its easier for me to make short posts and how over realy long ones. Partly because my wee brain spends to much time trying to digest things |
