AMK, you Big Hamster, you!
You have been cordially invited by our group to join in the study. Just let Nobby know (he probably already has you signed up).
You can join however you please. You can jump in and join us where we are right now or you can do a read-through of the posts then jump in with questions, thoughts etc...
Either way would be fine as it all ties in and we do refer back to not only previous posts but also the OT and other verses in the NT.
Looking forward to getting to know you and exploring Hebrews as a group/team.
Love, Luv |

Let me know.
Besides Stephen and Atoz, are there any others that would be interested in joining?
Thanks.
Luv | Would you care to allow me to enter into this ?
The Book of Hebrews goes into what Jesus Christ is doing in heaven right now...today. |

I would love it if you would join. We've kind of gotten away from the study but I would like to revive it.
The only thing I ask is that your posts be reasonable in length for a few reasons:
1) My eyes don't focus quite like they used to and longer posts are hard on them.
2) My focus/attention span kind of wanes after about 5 paragraphs per post.
3) I am often limited on the time I can spend online as I have family and work obligations.
4) I absorb more if it's given in smaller doses.
Please just send a copy of this to Nobby and ask him to add you to the group. We've kind of hit a stand-still and I think your input may be just what is needed to breathe life in to the study.
Thanks,
Love, Luv |

| luvnlife wrote: | BitterLily; That sounds good but I have to confess that I am already starting off on questionable footing. You see, my first question has to do with who Melchizedek is and if he really lived or was he a metaphorical representation of Jesus.
Does Melchizedek mean Prince of Peace or King of Righteousness? (There are different interpretations of the name which leads me to ask the next question....) Which came first... the chicken or the egg? In other words, has Melchizedek always had a particular meaning or was this name assigned special designations by religious historians through the ages?
It could prove to be an interesting discussion.
Thanks,
Love, Luv :D | The tithing system reaches back beyond the days of Moses.
Men were required to offer to God gifts for religious purposes before the definite system was given to Moses, even as far back as the days of Adam.
In complying with God's requirements, they were to manifest in offerings their appreciation of His mercies and blessings to them.
This was continued through successive generations, and was carried out by Abraham, who gave tithes to Melchizedek, the priest of the most high God.
The same principle existed in the days of Job. Jacob, when at Bethel, an exile and penniless wanderer, lay down at night, solitary and alone, with a rock for his pillow, and there promised the Lord: "Of all that Thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto Thee."
God does not compel men to give.
All that they give must be voluntary. He will not have His treasury replenished with unwilling offerings.
The Lord designed to bring man into close relationship with Himself and into sympathy and love with his fellow men by placing upon him responsibilities in deeds that would counteract selfishness and strengthen his love for God and man.
The plan of system in benevolence God designed for the good of man, who is inclined to be selfish and to close his heart to generous deeds.
The Lord requires gifts to be made at stated times, being so arranged that giving will become habit and benevolence be felt to be a Christian duty.
The heart, opened by one gift, is not to have time to become selfishly cold and to close before the next is bestowed. The stream is to be continually flowing, thus keeping open the channel by acts of benevolence.
As to the amount required, God has specified one tenth of the increase.
This is left to the conscience and benevolence of men, whose judgment in this tithing system should have free play.
And while it is left free to the conscience, a plan has been laid out definite enough for all.
No compulsion is required. |

Your whole post was beautifully stated. I struggle with this because the church I am currently attending requires a 10% tithe. Beyond that, they want money for missions, special speakers, youth, other, building fund etc...
I believe in giving what we can afford but I also believe tithe was meant to be distributed to all the areas on the tithing envelope. I also believe part of what God wants from us is to do and to give to others, to be cheerfully charitable. This is a loving act not only to our fellow man but to God as He has urged us to be charitable to one another. In that respect and because of the bible, my family has increased what we give to others who may not have food, clothing, furniture etc... We look for ways to help others and offer our time and money to help out when and where we can.
Thanks. I enjoyed your post.

Silver;
Have you been to the Omega study yet? I'm looking forward to your input.
As I mentioned before, we are basically starting on page 16 as that's where we left off when we all temporarily abondoned ship.

I am also a self-supporting minister, myself.

| THAT is the WHOLE spirit of Christianty, right there !
Tithe involves more than just money, it also involves a person's time and talents, devoted to the welfare of others. |

Go to Bible Studies. You should see an Alpha and an Omega. Ours is the Omega study. (The other one is a private study on U.S.).

You know what's sad, Silver is I have spoken up and offered to help when there have been needs that I could fill but because I am not baptized in that church I always get passed over so I have to find ways to help outside the church. I'm not a member so they won't accpt my time and help but they sure have accepted my money over the past 4 years with no problem.

What's stopping you from becoming a member, Luv? And that's odd that they don't accept your help. We have a few people in our church who aren't members yet are there at every function helping us out faithfully. That sounds very strange indeed. |

Hi Evee;
Do you want the truth?? I have learned a lot of good things there. I've met a lot of good people and they do support the community.
I have two unresolved issues and the first is a biggie:
1) I don't believe in the Trinity. I do believe in God. I believe in Jesus. And I believe in the Holy Spirit. But there is one God. And there is one son whom God has appointed Master, King, Ruler, Teacher but he is not God. He is the son of God. The Holy Spirit is what God gives away. He breathed it in to Mary when she became the mother of Jesus and He has given it to us. The Holy Spirit is Gods spirit that He gives to us. Jesus is not a God. The Holy Spirit is not a God. There is ONE God. Not 3. Just as a family has a Patriarch, God is the head over Jesus and the angels though he has granted Jesus much power and free reign.
2) I believe in giving. I believe that we should give what is in our hearts. But I have a couple of issues with the tithe thing. One is that there is a lot of pressure from the pulpit to give that 10%. The other is that the tithe is separate from about 8 other things the church asks for money for. They want the tithe and in addtion they want you to contribute to Missions, Youth Group, Special Speakers, Other, the building fund and a couple of other things on the envelope.
I also believe in giving to other organizations. My family supports the local Food Pantry, we give to United Way, Salvation Army, Goodwill, Sr. Citizens center, Libraries and other charitable causes. I want the freedom to do that. I also want a little in savings so that we can get couches without going in to debt (as some of my couch cushions have ripped and are being held together with duct tape, no lie). We don't mind giving but our money only stretches so far and the church puts pressure on people not just to give but to give that 10% then give to the other several categories on the envelope in addition to the tithe.
I want you to know that I called over 20 churches in and around my little town. Of the ten that responded, 9 are Trinitarian churches. The other is JW.
I'm doing the best I know how. I want to continue to learn and I want that foundation for my little girl as well.
Sorry.... I kind of went off on this but you asked so I answered.
Love, Luv |
