A Marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist and a member of the ACLU.
One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes." The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop.
Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am God. I'm still waiting."
It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform.
The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence.
The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What the heck is the matter with you? Why did you do that?"
The Marine calmly replied, "God was too busy today protecting America 's soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act like an idiot. So, He sent me." |

This is classic glurge:
| Quote: | Glurge is a term specific to snopes.com, coined in 1998. Already in its short lifespan it has reached across the Internet and has appeared in the print media a number of times, and it may well soon make the final breakthrough by appearing in dictionaries as a bona fide entry. The word was invented by Patricia Chapin, a member of the urban legends discussion mailing list run in conjunction with this site. At a loss for words to describe the retching sensation this then-unnamed category of stories subjected her to, she fashioned a word that simultaneously named the genre and described its effect.
Glurge (a term which can be used to describe one story or applied to the genre as a whole) is the body of inspirational tales which conceal much darker meanings than the uplifting moral lessons they purport to offer, and which undermine their messages by fabricating and distorting historical fact in the guise of offering "true stories." Glurge often contains such heart-tugging elements as sad-eyed puppies, sweet-faced children, angels, dying mothers, or miraculous rescues brought about by prayer. These stories are meant to be parables for modern times but fall far short of the mark.

and? What's your point?
June 6, 1944 Normandy: 2500-4900 US Dead. In one day.
April, 1945 Okinawa: 8,000 US Dead. In one month.
Don't quote numbers to insinuate a point. The overarching issue is "Is it worth it?" If it is "worth" it, the number is irrelevant. If it isn't, not one death is "worth" it...
Personally, I think it is...and the anti-war crowd dishonors the men who FREELY and WILLINGLY answered the call.
FWIW, I thought the story funny probably for a different reason...I like seeing arrogant, vapid, not-personally-committed-or-affected people getting a dose of reality....but then I'm just like that |

| I can move it, but it wasn't intended for debate, just an amusing anecdote for our members of faith to enjoy. I suppose some forgot where they were.... |

No, he is...but this is in the wrong forum. General policy here (and generally respected) is the the Christian Fellowship Forum (where this thread is ) isn't a debate forum....it's a place for Christians to come and talk without having to "defend" their faith.
It's not the topic that's the problem, its the location. There are plenty of other forums here where this topic would be "fair game" for the usual debate and banter, but it's impolite here in this one. I respect that and hope we all do too |

Since there is debate that was initially unforeseen, perhaps the thread should move to where the debate can continue for those who wish to participate. It would be silly to be on one side of a debate and keep it jailed here so that nobody can argue with you about it...
I suggest the Politics forum. |
