there is a slight chance of "regime" change in Iran...Ahmedanutjob is facing some serious internal pressures (unemployment is up, inflation is ludicrous, some of the "moderate" imams don't like his "Threats to Israel" speaches)...so part of his motive is to encite problems with the West to divert attention....he may overstep his hands...

Israel is pretty spooked right now and internally divided over their leadership too...alot of people unhappy with the handling of the Hezbollah situation (not that the fought, but that they didn't win) and their President is facing rape charges (the Israeli President is a figurehead, no real executive power, that rests with the Prime Minister), so....

The odd thing is, pressuring Iran (politically, militarily, and economically) may actually work, while invading Iran would unify his people under Ahmedanutjob...we'll see. Strange days for sure. (and no, I still don't think this is the end times...it's a sad story that has been repeated too many times...)

Oh, and I'm sure this will be Bush's fault for provoking them Rolling Eyes

What kind of conspiracy theory have you contrived from this? We are putting 20K more troops into Iraq to invade Iran?

Can you try to connect the dots for me as I missed that somehwere>

Have you thought about becoming a Pastafarian? According to the Pastafarian belief system, pirates are "absolute divine beings."

You can also combat global warming! Wink

Exactly!

Thanks Ana...that's great. The UN is about to release a "shocking" report that says "we're 90% sure that people cause global warming"

90% Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Absolutely no mention of what could or could not be in the remaing 10%...

So that means Pirates are in the other 10%! Ana, Brilliant! How do you write to the Nobel Prize Committee? Laughing Laughing Laughing

How did this thread get from invading Iran to global warming?

OH, hijacking, that sounds like piracy to me.

We have pirates right here. oh my

well let's rescue the old biddy and get back to invading Iran.( pay a ransom if nothing else works.)

Iran is a far different kettle of fish than Iraq. Much bigger country, better armed (by the Russians I believe) with missile technology Yeah I know how notoriously bad their missiles are but even a bad missile can hit something. Not a push over by any means.

Frankly I doubt if Bush really wants that invasion on His ticket. Maybe for the next Republican ticket though. However given the electoral muscle of the military industrial complex they might just get their way anyway. (re:"Why We Fight")

This is another middle Eastern country that the West has meddled with over the recent decades, but at least it has its own real culture not some amalgam created out of whole cloth like Iraq was. In the not too distant past they were actually friendly (prior to Khomeini) to us so this might just prevent them from attacking us point blank. The minor incursions to support their friends the Shiite's can be overlooked as long as it is not too blatant saving us from far more of our soldiers being killed over territory they will never keep.

If they attack Israel with missiles, all bets are off.

Um... that is what was being said about the world's fourth largest Army in January of 1991. In March of 1991 the world was no longer saying that... and it was no longer the worlds fourth largest army.

They (their military) would be toast in a matter of days dim. It wouldn't take much to change their minds.

Yes... the equivalent of Fahrenheit 9/11. Rolling Eyes Guess we had just better watch them rascals selling all of these missiles and planes to the DoD...

It didn't prevent them from taking 50 plus folks hostage for over a year. It didn't prevent them from taking over our embassy. What makes you think they won't do this again? If I'm not mistaken, one of those hostages fingered Amadenjhiad as one of the captors during that crisis. Seems he has at least this in his blood to try something.

It looks like that is about to change too...

Actually.. I give 'em 24 months. If they don't stop this uranium enrichment program... there is no way we, or the Israeli's will allow them to have a nuke. It simply is unacceptable given the rhetoric they have espoused.

Saddam said it was going to be the "Mother of all Battles". He didn't count on two trivial details: 1) The mass surrenders by his own troops. 2) His elite Republican Guard running so fast back into Iraq you'd think they strapped jet engines onto their tanks.

One can expect pre-war rhetoric from the Iran leadership to be much the same.

I think it would be a prolonged air war with no troops going into Iran. And the air war would likely be aimed at military assets and infrastructure pin-pricks such as electric power plants and refineries.

Since Iran imports 40% of their refined gasoline since they lack refineries, hitting the refineries they do have and blowing up their tank farms would put them in a big gas crunch in a few days and hits their economy big time as everyone starts panic buying what gas is still available.

That's what everyone is eyeing. Israel's toleration ended when Iraq got to the brink of nuclear capability. Once Iran gets to the brink of nuclear capability too ... look out!

I don't think Israel or the US can afford to wait that long. I'll be watching to see what happens by June if no movment is made by then.
