It really seems like the Bush administration is doing its best to ACCELERATE global warming.

Check out this article:

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/politics/16126620.htm

Here are some relevant quotes:

Quote:
The justices heard arguments over whether the Bush administration can continue its refusal to regulate the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases under the federal Clean Air Act.

That's right: the Bush administration really has been REFUSING to do anything about global warming.

Here's another good one:

Quote:
Deputy Solicitor General Gregory Garre, representing the Bush administration, said the EPA did not have the authority to regulate greenhouse gases from vehicles under the Clean Air Act. Even if it did, he said, the EPA would be reluctant to act because of "substantial scientific uncertainty" over the impact of global warming.

This is just a bold-faced lie. There is no 'substantial scientific uncertainty' about ANY aspect of global warming. The overwhelming number of climate scientists all totally agree that a) we're a major contributor to it, and b) what will happen if we don't curb our emissions drastically.

So let's recap: the Bush administration is telling lies in order to make sure that the world as we know it will be destroyed.

I disagree. It's for making money, heedless of what it does to the world.

I like that bit from An Inconvenient Truth, where he's got a scale with gold bars on one side and the Earth on the other, and says that the only catch is, if there is no world, then there's no gold bars either.

Yes, of course I'm hyperbolizing, but I'm doing it to emphasize an important point: the world as we know it really is going to be destroyed, and nasty people in power are telling lies (as you point out, in order to make money) in order to take us down that path. The fact that people are willing to sacrifice THE ENTIRE PLANET in order to enrich themselves is just mind-blowing.

I can understand people stealing credit card numbers or selling drugs or even robbing banks in order to enrich themselves. But to sacrifice life on Earth as we know it?!? I think it's the most evil, greedy, and selfish thing I've ever heard of.

It is a bad thing; we are currently migrating the Earth into a state which will be MUCH worse than it is today. The level of suffering on the planet in the year 2100 will be tremendously horrible when compared with today.

Well it isnt a good thing to think its ok for Global Warming, but it is predicted biblically. Shocked Revelations talks of it.

For us older folks we can say 'whatever' cuz we are going to die anyway and the timing is about right to where we may not suffer at all...but our kids-our grandkids-thiers-all get stuck with the bill. Embarassed

Legislation to work on counteracting global warming is too slow and is lacking in information. Crying or Very sad

You should have read the paper I wrote on Roddenberry's view of the future and the socio-economic effects Star Trek has had on society... The best 150 pages I think I have ever written...

Wow. Even though I'm not a Trekkie, I would probably have wanted to read that. Would you care to give a summary?

I wish I could. The minimum page requirement was 25 pages, I went a little overboard.

I invested a lot of time in his altruistic use of race and nationality in a way that had never been seen in the world until then. A black (a black woman no less) in a position of equality to all others. Not just equal, but a position so key to the survival and success of the group (nothing happens without the communications officer being effective), a russian, an asian, european, an old country boy, and an average midwesterner (not to mention Mr. Spock who represented the faithless) all working together on a common mission, thier differences strengthening each other's weaknesses.

There was a bunch about the economic idealsim of the show as well.

Off topic (some more), but I just saw Superman Returns. Anyone else see it? The 'religious' overtones amazed me by thier conspicuous nature.

3 thoughts, all of them Non-Sequiter:

1) Superman Returns: Really enjoyed it. And yes, Superman is Messianic in the film. I thought it well done and really enjoyed how they humanized Supes (the Lois Lane relationship [Supes still loves her, she still loves him, she's replaced him with Superman-lite, Superman-lite is a stand-up guy, Supes won't usurp his postion....) while keeping him "superhumanly" inspiring...love the bank robbery break-up.

2) Gene Rodenberry's vision...I like Star Wars for the heroic mythology it possesses, but I love Star Trek's message of hope (except for the random Red Shirt guy on the away team:)) And oh by the way, notice that Enterprise, a ship tasked with a scientific mission and a Prime Directive of non-interference still carried guns and torpedoes....

3) P#s, you make it sound as if the current administrations policies are a malicious act. I think it is more an act of "omission" than "comission". That still makes it bad, but not evil. Frankly, I concur that it is driven by greed and power...maybe the Dems in Congress (they write the laws right?) will do something...bet you dimes to donuts that they don't Smile

You will see them decry and descredit the Republicans for past policies, but they won't do anything about "the future" other than work to increase their chances for the White House.

I also think it's a "somebody needs to fix this, but it aint gonna be me" issue...although the meme gets hounded in the press, it just doesn't resonate with the general population right now (or yet), so the politicians don't see the gain they'll achieve compared to the loss they will experience if they force industry to "retool" "redesign"
- Couple of other points, do you think China (which is modernizing exponentially) gives 2 hoots about global warming?
- Predictions of doom (ala "Global warming will result in worst hurrican season ever for 2006") don't come true...they loose credibility....
- the planet has been a self-regulating "organism" for 400 million years...The Earth will continue even if that means "regulating" us Smile

4) Anybody even taking note of Hezbollah's powerplay in Lebanon? Soon Isreal will have 2 border neighbors committed to Israels destruction....

Star Trek is a standard utopian view of the future. No poverty, no pollution, no racial hatreds, no crime, no money. It's all highly unrealistic, but at the same time we should definitely try to migrate our society to be more like theirs, without the men running around in tight pajama-like suits; we can do without that. And without Wesley Crusher; we don't really need him either. Riker was kind of creepy as well.

I would argue that it IS a malicious act and that it is evil. I often throw the word 'evil' around very flippantly, but this time I really mean evil. Politicians today ignoring global warming is about the most evil thing I can imagine. Just think about it... The Bush administration has been ignoring and continues to ignore global warming because of greed and power. But we aren't talking about some kind of small-time corruption where a politician takes a bribe from a company so that it will get a government contract or anything like that. We're talking about the same motivations, greed and power, but the stakes and consequences literally couldn't be any higher. Bush and friends are literally willing to sacrifice life on Earth as we know it.

Drug dealers are greedy and evil, and all they ever do is destroy a few lives. The Bush administration is motivated by greed and power and is willing to sacrifice human civilization. If that's not evil, then nothing is. I claim that this is the most selfish act in the history of humanity. Seriously, can you think of a more selfish act than sacrificing all of human civilization for personal gain?!?

I agree that the Democrats will come up far short of even coming close to fixing the global warming problem... But I guarantee that they'll do a better job than the Republicans have been doing. I say this because it is probably mathematically impossible to do a WORSE job. Remember, the Bush administration went so far as to buy free hummers for small businesses!

I've never heard a credible climate scientist say anything like this, and I've watched like 10 global warming documentaries. They are always very careful about what they say. It's more like, "We have no idea if next season will be a strong or mild hurricane season, but we do know that over the coming decades, the average number of hurricanes we see per season will increase, and so will their intensity." And these predictions ARE coming true.

Yup. The human population will grow to about 10 billion people or so, and at that point something's going to give. We will run out of some resource. It might be food, it might be fresh water, it might be energy. Who knows... But at that point we'll see death and suffering on an unprecedented scale. Just think about it... If we have 10 billion people on the planet, and the planet is right on the edge of growing enough food for all of them, and then we have a particularly bad drought year (which we will, thanks to global warming), the death toll won't just be in the millions... it will be in the tens or hundreds of millions.

Yup. I'm waiting for them to assassinate the ENTIRE leadership of Lebanon. As for Israel, 2 is still a very low number if you consider the past. And what about its non-border neighbors? Isn't Israel's destruction also in the Iranian constitution?
