i am new to studying the bible and am deciding which study bible to buy. the two i am looking at are the Rainbow Study Bible NIV Indexed and the Zondervan NIV Study Bible. can anyone give me some advice on the major differences between these two study bibles? i know that the rainbow study bible has color codes in the text, but i'm wondering if people have found this feature to be particularly useful or if there are other features in the Rainbow Study Bible that make it a great choice.

thanks.

I do not know if this site will be of any help but here it is:

The most important thing I was told about choosing a bible was from a man that had spent his life in Africa tranlating the bible into the language of the people. He said choose a bible that you can understand.

FYI: I have the Life Application Study Bible, the Knowing Jesus Study Bible, and the NIV Study Bible... these three I have found to be informative and most enlightening
<my two cents>

I also have a Life Application Study Bible (NIV) and a Ryrie Study Bible (NAS). Sometimes both and sometimes one or the other provides info to help me understand the text. But sometimes, I have to look further (Bible Dictionary, Commentary, Concordance).

I use the The New International Inductive Study Bible. It comes in all versions of the bible. I happen to use the New American Standard Version. I agree with the comment, the best one is one that you can understand.

Most of us migrate to what we have used for years and all versions seem to have their strengths.

I would highly recommend the inductive study method. This is not a version, but a way to study. That is so important.

Study bibles are terrific, but if you are like me, it is kind of easy to read a commentary from a man, and take it as total authority. With the inductive study method, you get the "tools" to interpet and apply scripture, using scripture.

In the front of each bible comes the inductive study method and how to do it. Before you invest in your new bible, take a look at this study method and bible.

I personally do not use commentaries. Many people do, but I want to know what scripture says and what it means and I want to know that I am using scripture to get to that core meaning. I do not mean that there are not some excellent commentaries, there are. I just believe that by using an inductive method, I get at the truth using God's word, not man's opinion. One of the things that the method teaches is to start with prayer. Before I study, I ask the Spirit of God to help me see His Will and Ways and to help me see things that I need to see from His Word. And it is amazing the way God helps me.

I have been a Christian for over 35 years and during the past four years, I have grown more than I ever thought possible and I believe it is in large part due to the method that I have been using since I purchased this bible and the Spirit's leading in my life.

J. Vernon McGee,was a minister who is now dead but still is on daily on most Christian radio stations across this country. He says that there are all kinds of ways to study.
Sometimes we look at 'devotional reading' as deep study but usually it is not. An in depth study comes from using an inductive approach to understanding what we are reading and making application to our lives.

I have purchased this bible for five for family and friends and each one of these people have said, that the bible study and understanding of scripture that has come is like nothing that they have experienced.

May God bless you in your new walk. I will be praying for you. If I can encourage or help you in your study, please let me know. I am very happy that you have a heart searching for God's Will. You will be amazed at how the Spirit will guide you in your search. My prayer is that you will come to His Word, seeking His Will. You will not be disappointed if you do that.

God's blessings to you sweetheart, you take care.

I completly agree with Victoria. Bible aids are fine, but study and rely on the primary source, the Word of God.

Great post, Victoria. I completely agree. (I also enjoy J. Vernon McGee's teaching.)

Thanks guys for your support. It is so important for a new christian to begin their walk with all the tools available.

Mentioning J. Vernon again. He said something very enlightening recently.

He said that Satan had the world and that he did not have to work at that... they were his. Scary, isn't it. But then in typical J. Vernon style, He said. Do you know where Satan is on the Lord's Day. Right there beside the Christian, trying to detour their devotion and worship. J. Said, he is working on the saved, trying to destroy the peace and gifts that God bestows on us as His children. Chilling thought.
