Yup - this is one example of something I was speaking with someone about just the other day - there is so much contrary 'information' out there that people just don't know what to think anymore.

I think that we don't have all the information about the situation there, and that it's highly unlikely we ever will get the true story, but based on the information on that page, I'm actually with Barrick on this one. I'm also against email petitions, because they waste a lot of resources and have very little credibility.

No doubt- a problem in finding the truth here. I hesitate to believe anything thats inflated to this level...makes ya wonder what motives the original article writers had in mind-perhaps they are after the precious metals themselves...

Campaigns like this remind me of the lengths quack doctors go to — "the FDA won't give me approval for [miracle drug!] because it would undercut their profits/remove their stranglehold on whatever/remove the harmful effects of fluorine on your brains!"

Some priceless excerpts of this piece:

Quote:
to destroy the glaciers - something never conceived of in the history of the world

Funny, I use to take snow and eat it when I was four... figured out when I was five that the white stuff tasted a whole lot better than the yellow stuff... but knew if you melted ice, you got water.

Quote:
The operation is planned by a multi-national company, one of whose members is George Bush Senior (what a surprise eh?).

Thus, automatically qualifying it as an evil enterprise. Laughing

Quote:
it hasn't started yet is because the farmers have got a temporary stay of execution.

We are equating the destruction of an ice cube to capital punishment. Yikes.

Please will the 100th person to receive and sign the petition send it to noapascualama@yahoo.ca to be forwarded to the Chilean government.

A message that circles the world over and over again through the internet that gains 100 signatures qualifies for governmental consideration in Chile? Interesting indeed. Confused or disgusted

With that said... if all of this is indeed true I am all for the little guy (the Chilean farmer in this case) to maintain his/her water rights. Scratching an agrarian living out of the side of a mountain is hard enough with even the best water… anyway.

But, looking or mining for gold should not be confined to South Africa where it doesn't really matter what gets tore up... Rolling Eyes If there is gold in them there hills, it is going to take a little more than 100 signatures on an internet generated chain letter to keep people from coveting it. Guns might do the trick (lots of them)… but… then again, TSS initiated this thread and my guess he wouldn’t agree with dat.

i have read up a little in mining operations....it can be very contaminating...and if there is any truth that any river will become poisoned...it should not happen so a few who are wealthy can become wealthier...even if there are 49 other clean rivers there...

if they can do the operation without damaging the enviroment great...go for it... but if even one river is contaminated...it is unaccptable to me...and if that happens...imo...all the money made should go to those who live near it...and make a living from it...and also to try to clean it up...with jail time for the ones responsible...

If those farmers were smart they would have already been up their digging for gold...

TSS, this is by far the wisest thing I have seen you write. Restore our Rivers!

Hmmm, if I put 2 and 2 together by combining what Barrick's opposition says with what An Inconvenient Truth says, that glacier won't be around for much longer, so Barrick would be able to mine that gold without interfering with the glacier. Of course, the farmers are still getting the short end of the stick; it just won't be Barrick's fault.

good point..and imo..any who say global warming is untrue...does so out of greed...and with a mountain of evidence to suggest otherwise...

it doesn't matter now though...really it doesn't...at this point...it is too late...you may not believe that...but it is true...the earth is in some big trouble due to this...we can slow it down and maybe even lessen the impact some...but it is in motion and no way to stop what is already done...we have not sen the full effects of it yet...i mean...the full effcects of the g.w. done at this point...not even close...if we stopped all major contributors to g.w. today...we would still have a major problem to deal with because of it in the future...

what i love is to hear the ignorant selfish industrial politicians say g.w. is not true because we have some of the coldest winters on record now...stupid, stupid men...that is only more proof of g.w....

and yes apoc...restore our rivers!!!...

So the pizza delivery guy who says global warming is untrue is doing so out of greed? How so?

I don't agree. I think the earth is going to be just fine, it has a way of balancing things and healing itself. I think it is all the little people and animals who are scurrying around on her surface that are in big trouble.
