I don't agree with this at all. I think that protesting against female genital mutilation and condemning cultures that practice it is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. |

Sure, but I'm specifically talking about the part where Phelps is totally convinced that God will destroy America. Even if you believe in the literal interpretation of scripture, I claim that America's destruction because of its lack of persecution of gays isn't a foregone conclusion at all. |

Historically, how long do countries survive without destruction, or complete upheaval? Of course America will fall at some point. Yeah it's scary, but history shows us it will happen. May be several hundred years from now, but it will fall.
People have said God made America great, and I see images of Native Americans being slaughtered, slaves working our land, etc. - This is what God wanted?
I'm as red-blooded American as the next guy, but we are also prone to blindly accept our own propoganda.
My point is this: Was it God that made America great? And if you believe that, is it also God who makes it fall? If you say yes, then my next question is - couldn't this all happen on it's own, according to what History has shown us, without the need for a deity involved?
Would it be more prudent for us to try and examine what could keep it from falling, and to do this on our own - without invoking the chance intervention of a deity? |

i have no problem with your view...but i do not share it...there is no scriptural grounds for CHRISTians to protest...and there is some for us not to protest...but to lead quiet lives...and not to resist evil  (unless it is inside the church...those evil heretics!!!  )...anyway. .....
please explain what you mean by condemn... |

But America will be destroyed, the whole world will be destroyed when Jesus returns.

Obviously condemning them by ways of a moral statement at the United Nations or something like that, and maybe even with economic sanctions or other forms of pressure.
I think it is every human's duty to resist evil whenever and wherever possible. |

It may well happen a lot sooner than that. A lot of contemporary scholars are already saying that the "American Empire's" best days are behind it. Most point to the 50s as the American Empire's peak.
And the Bush administration seems to be doing its best to help you into the grave. They're messing around in Iraq and playing games with terrorists while the world's new and super-evil imperial power of China is rising.
An analysis of the Neoconservative strategy seems to suggest that they are trying to control the world's energy supply, and through that control the rest of the world (meaning China). It is far from clear whether this strategy is working at all.

And the answer is clearly no. It is geographic isolation, as well as vast natural resources, fertile land, and a lack of aggressive neighbours which made America great. You guys siezed the opportunity during both World Wars to really step up to the plate and thereby made yourselves the world's unrivalled superpower. God had absolutely nothing to do with it. Every single country on Earth repeats the old, "God is for us, so who can be against us." line.

yes i know what it is....and sin is sin...but surely there is a difference between two consenting adults and adults forcing torture and mutilation on a small child....
but the only way to change a culture is to change its heart....and sanctions that will only take what little they have away will only hurt the child...and all the people....i just don't see sanctions as a humane way to solve something like that... |
